GPL graphics stuttering on Radeon and SBLive systems

John Simmons reported periodic stuttering in GPL on a Windows 2000 system with a Radeon 8500 and SBLive card. Others with similar setups suggested the SBLive drivers were to blame, recommending lower hardware acceleration and removing the CD-installed drivers, while several said only reverting to Windows 98SE had cured it. No definitive fix was confirmed.

I'm running the following system: AMD T-bird 1ghz 768mb PC/133 CAS-2 RAM Radeon 8500 Windows 2000 Pro/SP2 SB Live! DirectX 8.1 Desktop is set to 32-bit color depth GPL - latest patch but absolutely no 3rd-party graphics enhancements (I don't recall what resolution I'm running in GPL) My display stutters every once in a while like the game is catching up with itself. I'm using the Direct3D renderer because the OpenGL renderer just makes my screen go black. It doesn't matter what track I'm at, what chassis I'm using, or anything else - it always does this. It does it while racing, or in practice, and also while viewing replays. I think I remember this behavior starting when I removed my Voodoo3 card a year or two ago, and swapping in the Radeon64 (and subsequently the Radeon 8500). Is there a secret setting I should be using for Direct3D, or can anyone possibly tell me why my screen goes black when i try to use OpenGL? -- ========================================================= Redneck Techno-Biker & "programming deity" http://www.paddedwall.org/john DeMONS/1 for Nascar Racing 3 & Nascar Legends http://www.paddedwall.org/demons DeMONS/2 for Nascar Racing 4 and 2002 Season (in development) http://www.paddedwall.org/demons2 Barbarian Diecast Collector (460+ cars and counting) http://www.paddedwall.org/diecast If you want to send me email, go to the first URL shown above & click "Send Me Mail" in the contents frame. =========================================================
Not only have I been having a similar problem, but you are not the first Radeon user who has mentioned this. The only thing my system has in common with yours is the SBLive! and a Radeon, although I have the 32 mb DDR aka 7200. So it's likely either a Radeon driver problem or an SBLive problem. But I have noticed mine pauses mostly when rounding a corner which brings a new area of the track into view - IOW I think it is texture thrash caused by having to load a new area of the track. This happens in NR2002, GPL, and F1 2001. It does not happen in any of the many shooters I have. "John Simmons" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

Make sure you've got the latest SBLive! drivers and then turn down the hardware acceleration on the sound card. A lot of people have found that affecting the video output. You may have to crank it all the way left before seeing any result. -- Chris H. The D3D stutter doesn't happen in any other game, and OpenGL works fine as well. Ditch the broad (er, board), and get a GeForce 3 Ti200 - it runs like a charm for pennies. By the way, at least five of the legends you mentioned are racing in CORS, so what's keeping ya... Cheers, The yellow-helmeted Ferrari driver.
I can't believe you guys don't know how to fix this...There have been like thousands of threads on this before I and I just joined this newsgroup. There are several patches that you must get. Update it to the latest patch for the game itself, then download something called speed or cpu fix, it fixes that stuttering that high end pc's have like 1ghz and up. And the last patch I like is the d3d beta patch for GPL where you are able to put the game at any resolution with your graphics card for the game. SOrry I don't remember where to get these but just do a search on google or somthing... "John Simmons" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

I tried to run F1 2001 with Radeon 7500, the bug with textures dissappears if you turn the mirrors off. Warren "Haqsau" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:a8asfv$qg58o$[email hidden]...

Got that too. The problems started about two video driver updates ago. Unfortunately I also made several other configuration changes at about the same time, so I'm still not sure which one f'ed things up. Another guy mentioned SBLive, but I have had the SBLive for a year and I have only had these problems for a few months. Any more ideas?

I put up with this problem on my system running Windows ME for about 6 months. All other programs worked fine except GPL. Tried every patch\driver\bios setting etc etc etc Finally I "upgraded" to W98SE and it has been smooth as a baby's bum ever since. Phil.
I have exactly the same problem. My system: MSI 694D-Pro mobo PIII 800Mhz (Just one CPU) 512Mb PC133 RAM Radeon AIW 32mb DDR WinXP SB Live 5.1 Onboard Promise Fasttrak Lite IDE raid I have run GPL in "VIC20 mode" (lowest resolution and all off or set to the lowest), and in 1280 X 1024 with all on and set to high. The stuttering stays about the same. It happens 1-2 times per lap at say Rouen, or I can run a lap or two with no stutter. It can happen on a straight, or in a corner like Haqsau says. It's in the replays, sometimes it repeats itself if I rewind and play it again, and sometimes it just happens the first time I play the sequence. My Radeon runs only AGP 2X due to incompatibility with the VIA chipset. But it should not make a big difference. I suspect the Radeon and/or drivers to be crap, or the Fasttrak Lite. There are two D3D rasterizers around, the one made by papy and some other one. Should I try this other one? BTW: I have also shut down all unnecessary services, but it didn't make a difference. Jone.

That's only on win98 that people have the memory probelm with more than 512mb.
Sblive seems to be the problem, for the first two weeks. Then you think it is the video stuff, two weeks latter you try motherboard BIOS updates and drivers. The only thing that fixed it for me was going to WIN98SE.

Nope. Yep - knew that - but this is GPL we are talking about so don't go to bed tonight and reinstall the whole darn thing with a dual boot. Then stay up the following night and get that IGPS/4 web site set up. Then we get the old IGPSers back together like a reformed rock band and hit the road. GNasher might even be shaving now :-) Jack might be wearing a disguise mind... Cheers Tony
Have my experience with stutter in almost every game, funnily enough mostely due to different reasons: GPL: In my case the SBlive was the prob. But not the hardware, it was the driver software. I got things under control by not loading the CD-version (this thing is really buggy and you should clean out your registery), but the sblw9xup from their website. It is still not perfect, but acceptable. Anybody knows where to find a fresher driver version? About the OpenGL: There was an upgraded patch quite awhile ago, but this thing doesn't work properly too with newer accelerators. AFAIK no workaround available. Sorry, I meant the retail SBlive drivers coming on a CD with the card. What I also forgot to mantion, I'm still on Win98 SE and cannot speak for XP or WIN2000. Anyhow: I uninstalled the drivers using windows control panel and then removed everything creative-related I could find from the registry. If you boot up the PC after that and Windows doesn't recognized the sblive by name, you made a good job. Then install the sblw9up... thingie from the creative website.
