Caution-filled RASCAR race at Pocono and the fallout

The RASCAR race at Pocono had seven cautions in 27 laps, while the following Charlotte race was much cleaner. Participants analysed the wrecks, blaming warping connections, braking differences into the flat corners and inexperience, and debated NASCAR etiquette about letting lapped cars regain a lap under yellow. Tom Pabst's remark about staying away until the 'kiddies' learned the rules drew angry responses, notably from EldredP.

Yep. "John Simmons" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]... > 7 cautions for 27 laps...Hey guys, had a lot of fun racing with you today, you're all pretty fast, I gotta say, I did not make one competitive pass all race long, till that last lap shootout, I was able to drag race to the line and just squeezed by......to get 5th. In between the wrecks, there was some veeeerry close racing at times, the kind that makes you pucker up. All good fun....... Ed

I found the pucker factor was just too high and only attempted passing on the straights. I wanted to apologize for my role in caution #7, from my replay it looked like DGF got into the wall in turn 3, ZZ Busch checked up and I pushed him into DGF. I think (hope) it was the only one I was involved in. It was great to race with you gentlemen, looking forward to the next one. -Phasor

I was *supposed* to be driving Ryan Newman's #12. It worked fine LAST week, but not today. Didn't change a THING. Slower than everyone in the field AGAIN during practice. This is getting monotonous. Started almost last, ahead of a couple of cars that didn't get a qual effort. During the second caution, I got hit from behind on the pace lap and damaged. Thought I would be given the black flag for speeding on pit road, so I drove through the pits on the restart. Third caution, I got caught out when everyone slowed down right when the flag dropped. I passed a car, and got a black flag for passing on the left before the s/f line. That's a stupid fucking rule, IMO. Come in to serve the penalty, get out about 12 seconds ahead of the leader(Achim). He's catching me at about 3-4 seconds per lap. Another yellow comes out when he's about 3 seconds behind. Cool - I can make up my lap. Surely he won't force the issue and lap me. Wrong - he got me coming out of turn 3 to put me a lap down. All this within at MOST 15 laps. At that point, it wasn't even worth the effort to continue. I pulled off the track and quit. I was so pissed that I didn't even bother to run at Charlotte. I'm not sure why we had all the yellows today. I just wish the pace car didn't take us around and around when one lap would do. Phasor, I looked at that replay earlier and there's nothing to apologize for as far as I'm concerned. It just looked like racing to me. That stuff happens. You might have gained some extra speed due to the draft and being in the middle. I wasn't touching the wall though, I was just very close to it as I always like to tuck up tight to it and then enter turn 3 right of the racing line, and brake a little deeper into it than others do. Besides, ZZ Busch thought it was all his fault so shhhhh. :-) David G Fisher
hmmm sounds like we need to EDUCATE the non-Nascar-fan drivers about letting lappers back by in yellow flag situations.....odd that "go-for-throat" Americans would be so forgiving in racing that way. But....that's pretty common in Nascar, when there is a yellow, the leader will often let off and allow recentlly lapped cars to get back on the lead lap...The feeling is THEY may need help later in the season so most drivers try to be generous when yellows are thrown. And......since this is friendly competiton, hopefully we will see more of this in the future... dave henrie "EldredP" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]... > In article <[email hidden]>, JohnSimmons > <[email hidden]> writes: > > >7 cautions for 27 laps... > > Ooh, that was depressing. Sounds to me like a lot of you today found out there's a whole lot more to NASCAR racing, than just turning in some quick laps during practice - then running solo until the race end. That's typical GPL - not NASCAR racing. Also, knowing the "official" NASCAR rules along with the "driver agreed" un-official NASCAR rules is a key to racing in NASCAR. How many people would play golf with you, if every time you hit your ball out of bounds, your opponent got the two-stroke penalty? Well, it may not work that way in golf....but in NASCAR racing it does! When you screw up, usually you and one or two of your competitors "pay the penalty." Maybe more! I think I'll stay out of these RAS races for a while, until the "kiddies" learn the rules, and how to race under them. ...lol... Some folks will let racers get their lap back, and others feel that their hard work to put you a lap down shouldnt be just thrown out the window. It's not personal, just the way some folks race. Same as in any Nascar racing series. Dont let it eat ya too much. ;>)

I was just happy to be competing in races that didn't have "Dudes" parking sideways on the backstretch or slowly driving around the track waiting to hear their spotter say the magic words, "Here comes the leader." Not one freeze during the entire Charlotte race though. Very weird. David G Fisher
> Sounds to me like a lot of you today found out there's a whole lot > more to NASCAR racing, than just turning in some quick laps during > practice Sounds to me like you are insulting our intelligence. If learning to race in Nascar was achieved by reading text books then we wouldn't need the term "Rookie" How many yesterday thought Nascar racing was about turning in quick laps in solo? - er none. > I think I'll stay out of these RAS races for a while, until the "kiddies" > learn the rules, and how to race under them. ...lol... Fair enough Tom, but some of the "kiddies" like me learnt more from the experienced online Nascar drivers last night than any amount of pickup races. I am surprised you don't feel you have anything to offer. It was my first experience ever of on-line yellow flags for instance - had plenty of practice mind :-) I would rather do that with a known bunch and it sure is different from racing the AI. After all isn't this what RAS is all about - helping each other out? Tony
Pocono is a very hard track, don't kind yourself. The problem at Pocono is the breaking and closing speeds in the turns. Since you need to brake, each car may slow at a different point and thus it usually leads to pile-ups going into the turns. It's also a very flat track making it hard to get through the corners at speed. Unless you tell people in advance so they have time to practice your going to get such issues on almost all tracks beyond the ones you can run nearly flat out. Tom, I'd have to agree with you. I was going to run Pocono today but had other things to do and was glad I didn't. No offence to anyone in the RAS races but seems from the comments that a lot of you don't really understand NASCAR. Once you get off the big banked tracks there is a LOT more to the game than trying to run flat out all the time. Hopefully things improve and I can make a race sometime with you guys. Well I'm not sure what comments Tom and you are referring to. Looking back through the replay at some of the incidents at Pocono, there wasn't anything happening that was unique to NASCAR. Some vets made mistakes and also some new guys. I think two incidents may have been caused by a driver with a connection problem. What was annoying was the number of times the pace car pulls you around the track when something minor happens. The other RASCAR races have been very, very clean and fast so far, including the follow up to Pocono at Charlotte. Like Kyle said, a few of us were running nose to tail with no room for error for half the race on a very fast and quick track, and the rest of the field was clean since we only had two cautions in 84 laps, one caused by a warping driver who politley disconnected when he realized what was happening. Also, there are plenty of wrecks in a real NASCAR race from what I've seen over the years. Those wrecks are actually a big reason many fans watch the races. IMO, NASCAR sim racing certainly isn't as hard as F1.There hasn't been anything really difficult to understand either in driving technique or rules that I've come across since I bought N2002. Maybe the next race should be at a track like Talladega, Daytona, or Texas. We've done the road courses and a few small tracks along with Pocono, so maybe a SS track would be a good idea. Something a little less tedious for the next race. I wanted to apologize for my role in caution #7, from my replay it looked like DGF got into the wall in turn 3, ZZ Busch checked up and I pushed him into DGF. I think (hope) it was the only one I was involved in. Thats what it seemed like from my seat. I did check up for David. As they say, I guess it's one of them Nascar racing deals. It comes from racing close together. No reaction time, I guess. I think after we all race together for a while we'll get better. I remember that in most of the leagues I've run in. It took quite a few races to get used to the other competitors. ZZ
Besides, ZZ Busch thought it was all his fault so shhhhh. :-) David G Fisher Hey!!! I did feel bad hitting you. But I did get help. I think I would've missed you if not for the tap. But that's Nascar racing. ZZ
"Tom Pabst" wrote... > <snip> I think you haven't got the premise for these races straight. The way I understand it, the whole idea behind setting up these races was for those in RAS who are/were not quite that familiar with NASCAR racing and were scared off by the N4 online climate to be able race and learn from those more experienced without having to worry about their wrath and for both to race away from the wreckers which ruin pick-up racing. If you were expecting some super elite, better than real life racing extravaganza then that's most unfortunate. I agree the Pocono race was pretty bad, but, from what little NASCAR coverage we get here, I gather the Pro's have races like that too. BTW: what rule, written or otherwise, covers how much distance one should leave if there's an invisible car between one's car and the next competitor ahead? Jan. =---
I think I'll stay out of these RAS races for a while, until the "kiddies" learn the rules, and how to race under them. ...lol... TP Now that just stinks of snobbery. I will agree to this one... the corners are of the "wait a while"-type. Seems to take forever before you can get the power down again. No question the NASCAR veterans were able to keep more speed up than I was, unfortunately some couldn't imagine anybody going any slower. > Unless you tell people in advance so they have time to practice > your going to get such issues on almost all tracks beyond the > ones you can run nearly flat out. Tracks were announced a week ago. That said, to practise I went from memory and only discovered after the Pocono race I had practised the wrong speedway (Darlington instead of Charlotte) and I went into the 2nd race cold. What does "check up" mean? Does it mean braking early? I have no idea. I wasn't into the wall at all though (as can be seen from the helicopter view) I braked late and stayed wide, leaving the "ideal line" open until we get close to the apex. I did that on every lap with T3 except when I passed someone on the inside. Right up close to the wall on entry but never hitting it. I basically follow the ideal line Papy shows with the "r" key except I brake a bit later and I go slightly wider and deeper before going for the apex. I do the same thing on entry to all three corners at Pocono actually. The replay shows you getting hit hard from behind and then basically shot into me. David G Fisher

Hi Eldred, apologies for taking the lap from you at that point. I'd actually decided to stay behind you to let you remain on the lead lap. But then you seemed to get into trouble in T3, ran wide and slowed down considerably (did you hit the wall?), and that sort of made me think it would be strategically better for my own direct battle with JohnP to not have to deal with passing you after the restart. It was a split-second decision. I'm a rookie on ovals, and I wasn't aware that apparently (as I deduce from what you said in your message) you would have been allowed to pass the pacecar and line up at the end of the field. Sorry again. Achim "EldredP" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]... ... > ...about 12 seconds ahead of the leader(Achim). He's catching me > at about 3-4 seconds per lap. Pure ignorance on my part Dave, not cutthroat attitude. You know I'm a rookie on ovals. I'd decided to let him stay on the lead lap, but then he seemed to get untidy in T3 and that made me worried about what the restart would look like with him ahead of me. I wasn't aware that (apparently?) he'd be allowed to pass the pacecar and go to the end of the line. It didn't feel good to pass him anyway and I did it neither lightheartedly nor happily, but purely for a strategical reason, and was feeling sorry while making the pass, too. There's not a thing in the world wrong with the fast setup for Pocono. It's amtter of playing with the hand you're dealt, and adjusting your driving style. I think he was actually saying that he had a choice - be a nice guy and let you stay on the lead lap, or keep 1st place. The choice was (logically) to keep 1st place. Eldred, I think you're taking this too hard dude. I'm almost NEVER the fastest in practice (usually middle of the pack), but pracftice isn't where it counts. What counts is how clean you race and that you DON'T QUIT. If you can keep out of trouble and pit smart, you can usually eek out a better position than you originally thought you would. If your race ends with you driving something that looks anything like a car, so what? As long as you make a decent effort to stay out of the way of the rest of the field, you finished, and that's all that counts. I have only quite a couple of races and that was because the connection degraded after I joined it. Nobody's gonna think any less of you for finishing poorly. What we notice is how you drive while you're on the track. I think you should just have fun and race, get a feel for the way the cars react in certain situations, and put in a couple of practice races against the AI (set them at 94%). When you can keep up with them at that rate, you'll be going at least as fast as I am. If you want to practice your passing technique, run the AI down to 91- 92%. The key is to have fun. -- ========================================================= Redneck Techno-Biker & "programming deity" http://www.paddedwall.org/john DeMONS/1 for Nascar Racing 3 & Nascar Legends http://www.paddedwall.org/demons DeMONS/2 for Nascar Racing 4 and 2002 Season (in development) http://www.paddedwall.org/demons2 Barbarian Diecast Collector (460+ cars and counting) http://www.paddedwall.org/diecast If you want to send me email, go to the first URL shown above & click "Send Me Mail" in the contents frame. =========================================================
I think some of us have lost track of what this is all about. We're not racing for points, there's no money oinvolved, and unless you reall give a rat's ass about rankings and the much idolized LPI, they're not a factor either. We're just a bunch of guys that have managed to form a unique little band of racers who only want a chance to race clean once in a while. We don't have to worry aboput intentional wrecking, jump-starters, or many of the other typically moronic moves we see in pickup races. I for one am damn glad of that. The fact that I've raced with many of you before (either Nascar or GPL) is an added bonus because there's a certain amount of rib-jabbing and good-natured criticism that we can all give/take from one another without going over the edge into an all-out fame fest. Unlike the pickuip races, most of our cautions are caused by "one of them racin' deals". To Eldred - keep trying and don't quit the races. Avoiding being hit is as important as avoiding hitting someone. Besides, you're not always gonna be the slowest in practice. To Tom - we need you there simply because you're a good teacher. Your lofty ideals are to be commended, but you gotta give the rest of us a little latitude where mistakes are concerned. They're simply gonna happen. To John Pancoast and Achim - Slow the f*ck down and let the rest of us keep up so we can at least have the illusion of being competitive. :) C'mon guys, it's just a game, and I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm here to have fun. Run the complete race no matter how bored you are - we ALL need the track time in a controlled environment like Eldred's server (and many thanks to Eldred for running it).

Eldred, first of all, thanks for hosting the races, you were gone before I had a chance to say that, and next, everything John says above is correct, I was by no means the fastest guy out there, I gave maybe a little too much room when guys got inside me (and did not get wrecked) , kept from running into the back of people, and finished the race in 5th with a clean car.....except I could see the hood, but that was all me :^) Nascar races with yellows enabled are long term endeavors, no matter how good a move you make on lap 2, the race ends at lap 50, or 100, and I've had the pleasure of winning races from a lap down, when I've had a 3rd place car and 1st and 2nd take each other out, and yes, occasionally, from just being faster......it's all for fun, but you've got to be there at the end to see what happens. I'll admit that my 5th place finish is nothing to write home about, but in my first race with you folks I didn't want to run the risk of being labeled an idiot by making bad/risky moves.......that's next week! That's correct Achim..........cars line up via position, and since at the time Eldred was further down the order than you, he would have lined up behind you on the restart. If you're in first, the only time someone will line up in front of you is if you pit, though there may be lapped cars to your inside. -John "Joachim Trensz" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:a9bnc2$1t2nm$[email hidden]...

I've had a good time racing with this group so far and I'm learning a few things as well. For me this is a chance to enjoy racing these cars with some racers that respect each other and try to race clean. There is no pressure to do anything but do the best race you can. What could be better than that? I'll try and have a car painted by next week. Steve Brunt (spark18)

I think there are several like me on RAS - relative newcomers to stock car racing who recognise that N2002 really is at the top of the current sims, and is an all round top performer. Now I wouldn't describe myself as a Nascar fan per se, but I do recognise the subleties of it, and participating is fun (where as for me watching real races isn't particularly). Inevitably there is a lot to learn, but that is part of the experience. Rascar seems an excellent place to learn without pissing off serious racers in leagues. For those unaware John ran one of the first GPL leagues which had a big disparity in ablity. The league was a great success and the performances of all were recognised both at the front & the back of the grid.

The performance is very variable throughout the green periods as gplers like ZZ & me cook our tyres to death. Jan & I had some good battles at Charlotte as our performaces varied. I find I tend to overdo giving room for leaders and either lose time or slide up to the wall. All part of gaining experience I suppose. I would rather be doing that than taking the leaders out though! As I learn I will be able to give enough room without killing my own chances. Heck, I might not even be lapped so much ;-) Thanks for hosting from me as well. Tony

No commitment Joachim! Remember when Mansell won Michigan with a migraine. They were giving him paracetamol in his drinks bottle, and he was sick with about 25 laps to go. Can't have much fun for the poor girl giving him a kiss on the winner's rostrum! Though I guess we shouldn't take Rascar *this* seriously :-) Cheers Tony

I did real racing for a while too, but in a different class of cars and under very different circumstances. As a matter of fact, we ALL have something to teach each other. I didn't see Tom's post as being snobby, but more as an act of self preservation due to perceived performance issues for the rest of us. Tom is free to feel that way if he chooses, but I think he's gonna miss out on some pretty good races. As for me... Even I have to say that I'm a bit apprehensive about racing with guys that aren't used to stockcar racing, but hey, it's just a game. Sure I was mad at my last incident last night, but I was just mad about my bad luck. I had gotten the car loose coming off the last turn and had finessed it into what I thought was gonna be a great save, when Steve nudged me (surely not his own fault because I had lost speed trying to save the car, and he was going to pass me low), and I spun into the pits as a result. Thankfully, I was slowed enough that I didn't get a black flag for speeding on pitroad, but I was penalized for entering a closed pit (grrrr). I had to fall to the end of the line on the next restart, and I lost some aero because my hood was pushed up a moderate amount. At the last restart (lap 49) I lost two spots because my aero problems kept me from getting up to speed enough to hold of dave, and as we came around the last turn, ed white had the aero advantage as we raced back to the finish line. It would have been very bad form to block weither one of them (and besides, this is called "racing", not "blocking". I don't believe in blocking, even on the last lap. And here's a perfect example of why you should never quit a race. There was some great racing going on in the back of the field, and if you quit without saving the replay, you missed a good chance to see what was going on. How about this? I spent the WHOLE day doing yard work in 90-degree heat. I have 3/4 acre in south Texas, and I (naturally) have a riding lawnmower. I had half the front yard done, and had to get off the mower to clear some tree limbs that had been blown off by the previous rotten weather we'd had. When I went to get back on the mower, it wouldn't start (dead battery). I couldn't leave to go get a new battery because I was also waiting on our quarterly visit from the pest control company, so I ended up using an electric weed whacker to mow the orther half of the front lawn. After that, I had to pick up the clean up all that crap (rake up the mowed grass, and bag it) and the longer I worked, the worse I felt. Allergies, the heat, and the fact that all this physical activity was not in tune with my otherwise sedantary lifestyle made for one draggin'- ass redneck. I was bone tired and my allergies had fully kicked in by the time the race started. Notice however, that I finished the race. Tony knows that I feel there's is NO excuse to just quit - if you show up for practice, you should be there when the race is over (unless your car just plain isn't drivable and cannot be fixed). :) -- ========================================================= Redneck Techno-Biker & "programming deity" http://www.paddedwall.org/john DeMONS/1 for Nascar Racing 3 & Nascar Legends http://www.paddedwall.org/demons DeMONS/2 for Nascar Racing 4 and 2002 Season (in development) http://www.paddedwall.org/demons2 Barbarian Diecast Collector (460+ cars and counting) http://www.paddedwall.org/diecast If you want to send me email, go to the first URL shown above & click "Send Me Mail" in the contents frame. =========================================================
It had nothing to do with the driver, Eldred. Just imagine what I saw in this moment: a car which all of a sudden had lost half a lap, was driving fairly slow and then seemed to get into trouble again although there was no need to hurry. Since I didn't know anything about your pitlane odyssey and all that, my first thought was of course that you'd had an off and seemed to be in trouble somehow, maybe because of damage to the car, controller probs, computers probs - or anything else. That neither mattered nor did I have the time to think this through in much detail - I reacted spontaneously. My assessment had nothing to do with the driver, only with the circumstances as I could see them at that time. Achim "EldredP" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

Yeah, well, my family given a LOT to let me online race and run a league over the years. So if I get in a "bad" race, I bail, especially since I come home from work on Saturday, and almost go straight to the pc. Bailed yesterday, I'll do it again in the future, fwiw, not just here, but elsewhere too, when it's not a points, etc. event. Racing is one thing; following a pace car is another. I've never, and won't, bail because of a moderately damaged car, can't win/finish well, etc. But when over 50% of the race is under yellow like yesterday, I'm gone<G> Like it's been said, it's just a game; some real world things are more important to me in the above circumstances. -John "John Simmons" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]... > In article <fkhu8.2626$[email hidden]>, > [email hidden] says...I guess we shouldn't take Rascar *this* seriously :-)

I'd actually also like to apologise for bailing out. But all those yellows were more than my patience could take. I was still feeling ill (had had a bad stomach/intestinal virus this week) and with the race taking so long, going back to the sofa seemed like an incredibly attractive option more and more with every new lap under yellow. Jan, no rules on this one, the internet is a flaky place to race, my thoughts are that if you and the invisible racer are both going as hard as you can, and following your normal lines, then a second or two blink-out won't cause much of a problem, he'll probably blink-in in the same relative position, but any longer than that, and you have to assume he's gone( and if he's not, he should be.....courtesy), so I would say "When in doubt, Gas It!" As soon as I noticed my connection Bar Graph was spiking way high I tried to get my car off of the track as quickly and safely as possible. This entire situation left me feeling very uncomfortable as I had cars ahead of me as well as behind me that I had no way of knowing where they were (would be) located when I would warp back in. I fear that I caused an incident with this entire situation. I hope not but I fear that it is true, as I finally had gotten my car stopped so I could "Retire" and got back to the Session Screen it showed up as everyone racing back to the yellow. If I did cause an incident, then I really do apologize! I can only say that I tried my best to avoid any incident due to this. I have posted about this as well as my apology to the #31 car for an earlier incident in the race, at the RASCAR Forum. Up to this Warp incident I was have a great time, and what I seen around me within the race everyone was racing clean and giving room. So I feel even worse for being the possible cause of a major incident. I may not be the fastest on the track but I do take pride in being a clean racer that is aware of the written and non-written rules of NASCAR, and then something such as this happens. :o( I do plan to race again if I can figure out some way to get some type of broadband connection. There's some kind of modem optimizing tutorial for GPL somewhere on the web. One of the GPL guys could probably guide you to it. I forgot to add that some people who have cable actually prefer to use their dial up modems. I think Andre W. does this with GPL. Thanks guys! :o) I actually had done this with N4, and I will try it out with NR2K2 and test it out some in Pick-up races, etc. I will also try to get into eldred's server thru-out the week, if I can find it up. If I am confident that I won't be a "warp wrecker" within the events I will attempt another RAS event. Afterall I just wanna race with something other than the AI!! :o) - Isotrip "Rob Adams" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:qwIu8.5897$[email hidden]... > > "David G Fisher" <[email hidden]> wrote in message > > news:0OGu8.62965$%[email hidden]... > > > There's some kind of modem optimizing tutorial for GPL somewhere onthe

Hi ISO! I was driving the 31 at Pocono last Sat. I was steamed when we wrecked in T1, but when I checked the replay it was clearly a warping deal. You have no problem with me, my friend. It's one of those online things. Hope to see you this weekend. Jeff P.S. You hit me while warping at Charlotte, too. That was me in the T2 incident. Do you hate me, or what? ; ) "Isotrip" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:3cbabfce$[email hidden]... > As soon as I noticed my connection Bar Graph was spiking way high I triedto

Uhhh...that was me apparently warping at Charlotte Jeff, I had posted in this same thread last week apologizing for the warp, (I am on cable btw), maybe you didnt see that post. Hadnt ever had probs in the past, it just chose a great field to start warping in...again sorry if I took you with me. Perhaps if we could mention in practice if we see someone warping on track, they can try to reconnect to get a better ping? That way me/them/whoever can know about it before getting into a situation where we "endanger" other cars in race mode? Not to mention the waste of time.....just a suggestion FWIW <G> -- Greg31 Jeff Leonard wrote in message ... > >P.S. You hit me while warping at Charlotte, too. That was me in the T2 >incident. Jeff, sorry but I didn't run the Charlotte race. After my connection problems at Pocono I didn't think it fair to the other racers if I was warping all over the place. Greg, I actually think it would be a good idea for racers to let others know if they are warping really bad. But keep in mind that everyone warps a little so you would want to make sure that they are warping enough to be detrimental to the racing. :o) - Isotrip (If this post shows up out of order or not in the "Pocono Today" thread sorry about that but I am posting this message thru a mirror on a Forum.) SO I guess I need to change my car # to something else, it seems that "31" causes warp <G> -- Greg31 Isotrip wrote in message ... > >Jeff, > >sorry but I didn't run the Charlotte race.
