Hi,
I just wanted to ask this simple question : when it comes to online
playing PC racegames, which games are the best ?
I am not asking which is the best game to play, but which game has a lot
of people racing online, having servers constantly online and always
more than enough players to race with ?
I guess some of the later NASCAR games are amongst this, but I dont
particularly like NASCAR racing - no offence.
GPL ?
CMR 2 ?
F1 2002 with mod's ?
Currently I am playing STCC2 (Swedish Touring Car Champ) and Insane
(1nsane), I really like them, but they lack some players to play online
... particularly STCC2 - which I think is an awesome racer.
rgds,
Tony
Yes, too bad that not too many people know about STCC2, i would actually
rate its multiplayer better then GPL.
Otherwise I think you should go for GPL.
Btw, do you have Rally Masters?, its also got pretty good onlineplayer, but
not as crowded as GPL :/

GPL ? I have played it briefly, but I didnt have my wheel back then .. found it
very interesting, awesome sound, nice tracks ... not to mention Nurburging
itself - at least a sim with that track
had lots of fun trying to remember the track (totally failed .. only 20 laps or
so) .. racing was quite impossible, kept colliding with other cars and scenery
.. I will try it again some day
Rally Masters : not tried yet ... know any link for demo ?

Totally biased answer: GPL. The client software (VROC) is small and
very reliable, without pointless bells and whistles; the game is
completely playable online with pings of 400 (as long as the connection
is stable) on a 33.6k modem; there's almost always more than one race
with enough drivers to choose from; you can happily race online
with a 500MHz Celeron and a Voodoo3; there are several "perpetual
servers"; and it's better than NASCAR (because discipline is [usually]
better, you don't get kicked off servers for crashing [OK, so that's
good and bad] and the tracks have right turns [except the ovals]).
The only real drawback is that I feel there are just too many pickup
servers these days, so the field gets spread a little thinly at times.
Having said that, once you get a "critical mass" of 5 or so drivers on
one server, others usually quickly follow, and a full house (19 +
server) is not unknown.

An often overlooked light sim is NFS/Porsche Unleashed.
The on-line play has these characteristics:
Nice lobby/chartroom while selecting a race to join, or to
create your own race, where you choose race tracks and rules,
and have a chat room for those waiting for the "owner" to start
the next race.
Pretty good physics. But it aint GPL, more like NASCAR Heat.
Road courses. About half of the tracks are a tour through
scenic European countryside. Nice graphics.
Races are sprints, usually over in 2 to 4 minutes.
Servers seem to drop once or twice, for about five minutes,
each Friday and Saturday night.
Max of 8 people per race. Pole position seems to be random.
Typically 60 players at any time on a weekend evening, U.S.
West coast time. There are usually about 10 races going, but
this goes up and down.
Servers are up, and kept busy, with drivers from around the
world. I've tried online at all times of the day, there are
usually plenty of players.
Ping times are 30 ms for me and a few others who are here on
the U.S. West coast, and 100 to 500, for most. Each driver,
however, is being fed the track smoothly from their own PC, so
they can drive fine.
Slow pings can make other cars appear to move in jerks and
pauses. They can even fool you PC into showing a car you are
following crashing, only to have it appear in front of you
driving fine, a second later.
Because of this the collision and damage functions are
usually turned off by the person who started the race.
The track and car files are encrypted, a few hacks have
been done to cheat, but no one has been able to add a new
car. So you only drive Porsches, starting with the 356 from
the '50s, to the 2000 911 Turbo. The 1998 GT1 and 1995 3.6
are among the most popular for online play.
Cheap. A friend got a copy in December for $20.00, and
there were 3 other sims in the box.
NFS has it's own newgroup, alt.games.need-for-speed.
Lots of fun. Light atmosphere. Nobody just got screwed
by an idiot on the last lap after an hour of the best race of
their lives.
As stated, these are sprints.
