so what do you guys feel about this game due out around the 26th now.
and do you think it will be good on the internet like gpl ?
pictures dont looks as good as race driver from codemasters, but sometimes
graphics arnt all there is to a game.
EA's V8 Challenge and its STCC2 heritage
Posters discussed EA's upcoming Australian V8 Challenge, whose release date kept slipping, and whether its online play would be good. Several explained that it was developed by the Swedish Touring Car Championship 2 team at Digital Illusions and reused STCC2 code and even some Swedish tracks, which raised hopes of solid multiplayer. The thread drifted into nostalgia for Bathurst and Australian touring car racing.

Is it Codemasters we get as intro to the televised V8 supercar races? Does
not look too good... Would much rather a real car with a camera...
Tony
ps I don't believe "25th April" as the V8 EA release date moves back every
time it gets within about 3 weeks. Initial planned to be a mid december
release giving missus an easy xmas solution - maybe for 2002....

Yep, the Codemasters game is what they use on the broadcasts as it is the
'official' game. From what I have seen, EA's V8 Challenge looks better.

Still having licensing probs I guess - AFAIK the game is ready for release.

Not necessarily, remember EA is only the publisher, ISI wrote F12001. I
think this is made by the "rallymasters guys", which was quite reasonable
online (i played quite a few 8 player races).

i think the multiplayer will be great. STCC2 had dedicated server, and is
like GPL in multiplayer. Good even for modem-users.

All their in-house Nascar games online stunk............though, like
Hasbro with Heat, they promised the world. It's not their priority and they

and its about time we got our v8's on the tracks !
well if its made by the same guys who did stcc2 ( not that we got that
here in aussie also :( and you say it has great online ! even with a modem
like gpl )
this then sounds like great news
:P
The only bad thing is that i heard that many of the tracks in V8 is from
STCC2, meaning that you will run on swedish racingtracks .

Even a Norwegian may have good taste when it comes to racing, in fact I
think we're ideally suited to make objective choices since we have no
racing worth mentioning here...:-)
Some day I'll have to capture the early laps of the 93 (?) Bathurst and
put it up for download, the dice between Larry Perkins and Peter Brock
in the wet would have been worth the price of flight tickets to Aussie
land on it's own, and more than worth the price of a few video tapes
:-), sliding those big V8's around like they were sprint cars or
something in a 5 lap shoot-out, awesome
So you are from Belgium then I take it ?
Is anyone still racing that Pug 806 Super Tourer that some maniac built
there ? :-)

hey, dont get me wrong, I like these cars as well, but I prefer some european style
touringcar ..; surely Bathurst makes it more attractive, but not all tracks are that
exciting ... anyway, once did F1GP2 on Bathurst .. interesting
remember that time some of these euroracers went downunder on bathurst ? some
belgians in an Audi V8 I guess .. anyway ... when I see some of that racing on my
telly, I will watch it as well, but since they dont do that here .. i have to watch
F1 ...
Peugeot 806 .. yeah, some crazy frenchies might have done that, they have done
crazier stuff

Good point, here's hoping so. Thanks for the info, I stand corrected.
Let's just hope EA doesn't change Digital's work.

I won't even mention the F1 coverage as it would make even an exciting

VHS/DVD, through Duke's or something similar

Duke's ? and they sell VHS and DVD's ... OK, but thats not a way to watch car-racing, is it ?
unless you want to watch some dated F1 or DTM, which can be very nice ... shouldn't you watch
this stuff live, or at least with some short time delay to have a bit of suspense ?

No, I agree, it's not the best way to watch racing, but you take what
you can get when you live in a country starved on motorsports coverage
:-), besides, if you don't know the outcome of the race, or if it's a
particularly good race.....:-)
I have lots of rally videos from before Audi ruined the sport with their
AWD Quattro :-), not really blaming Audi though, someone else would have
done it sooner or later, they just happened to be first....sort of
But seeing Ari Vataanen, Henri Toivonen, Pentti Arikkala, Marku "Maximum
Attack" Aleen, Jimmy McCrae, Russel Brroks et all in their RWD FIAT
131's, Escort RS1800's, Chevette HSR's or Ascona/Manta 400's was much
more entertaining than the current crop of cars, and well worth the
price of the tapes, even 10 years after which is when I bought them

Knew you were a reasonable fella :-)
Found a couple of AussieV8 tapes, not all of them are actually
"AussieV8's" as such, some are from the days they raced according to the
old "Group A" regulation, not quite the same, but...you take what you
can get :-), I belive the switched over to the current Super V8
regulation in 93....?, also, the pre 93 tapes has some spectacular cars
themselves, Nissan Skyline and Sierra Cossies to name a couple
I got my AussieV8 tapes from a genuine Aussie, he made sure I only got
good stuff of course, he's picky, I'm surprised I got any races won by
Ford at all since he's a huge Holden fan :-)

Aaah, reminds me of the time when we had "Screensport" here, lots of
European racing that Eurosport would never cover, as well as Live
coverage of the Bathurst, including qualifying....<sniff sniff>

Can't remember the year now, possibly '73, '74?
Did you ever see the dice that Allan Moffat and Peter Brock had in the
XY-GTHO and the XU1? Big V8 tank vs Nimble 6?
In fact, most of the earlier Bathursts that featured those two drivers
usually ended up in a good multi-lap dice.

I've got "History of Bathurst" or something on tape, 3 180 min tapes or
something like that, covering every year up to 96, but some of the

but I do remember the "eternal struggle" between Brockie and Moffat of
course :-)
I actually dug those tapes out my storage room to review the 94 race
again, it was 94 not 93, guess I'll have to watch all 3 tapes all over
again, not a bad way to spend a couple of evenings really
What continues to amaze me is some of the stuff from the early races,
which was not different from most touring/production car races at the
time probably, at one of the pit stops the guys remove the wheels to
change the bakes, when done they put the same wheels back on because
"they looked just fine".....amazing :-), or the interview with Brockie
where he talks about one his first races, being told not to use the
brakes too much to slow down the car, that he should slow the car down
by sliding it into the corners to save the brakes a bit, funny how the
racing scene has changed

Yes, I've seen those tapes.. gives you a good feel of Bathurst.

Can't recall if the brake change was a compulsory change because back
in the 70's its was bordering on useless, they'd work for 2 laps or so!
I had an 70 XW-GW with a 351C in it and I took it for a few unsafe
laps around Bathurst about 6 years ago (unsafe due to the fact it's a
2 way road when it's not being legitimately raced on) and the brakes
were ineffective by the end of conrod straight on the 1st lap!

I think I recall that one. 'and give it a little flick'?
Although the coverage of the late 60's and early 70's races was a
tad tacky, and the commentary early colonial Aussiespeak, I prefer
them to the later races based solely on the fact that they were
cars that were straight off the assembly line and couldn't be tampered
with in any way. Moffat complained about the seats in the XWGT which
would produce huge welts on his back after sliding around in the seat
for hours on end. I know exactly how he felt.
Cheers,
Rod.

Yup :-), my road cars have always had good brakes, not always a lot of

Yeah, that was kinda silly, not even be allowed to have a proper racing
seat in the car, but then again I also read an article in "Thoroughbred
& Classic Cars" about the time Wilmont Racing introduced the Ford
Galaxie to the British Saloon Car Championship, driven by Gentleman Jack
Sears if memory serves me right, they were accused of cheating because
other competitors thought the roll cage stiffened up the chassis too
much so they had to cut away part of it.....
Times have indeed changed :-)

STCC2 is the base for the V8-game. Even some of the tracks from STCC2 is
still in the V8 game. Yes, you will be racing
Swedish tracks in the australian racegame. I dont see why they would remove
the multiplayer from the code, since its already there.
It works great with 20players on cable . The most ive raced with modem was
12people, and it worked good.
Another thing is that you can disable the collision-detection of the cars in
STCC2, so you can race against eachother even if someone
has a real crap connection. Its kind of hotlapping against eachother with
everyone at the same time around you. Great fun actually :)
Its no big deal if one or 2 cars warp around the track, cause its not going
to hurt you.
One thing I like with Rally Masters online, is that you can select to play 5
races against eachother, and each one you get points if you win, etc.
And after the 5 races you see who is the master. Sometimes you race all cars
at the same time, and sometimes you go on these special stages, where
2 against 2 races, and then the 2 best races against eachother etc.
One more thing is that you dont have to go thru a boring 1hour practice
before start :)

yihaaw .. If they let all the good stuff from STCC2 in (the track and the cars
for example) this game will really rock ! I know about the collision stuff - we
always turn it off when racing - really fun, cause you cant push anybody off the
track, and still you are driving with cars around you, mind you, you can .. euhm
.. force somebody off the track driving in its way .. just destracting his sight
... thats the only disadvantage
by the way, which servers are you using when playing stcc2 ? does the name 'Nib'
says anything to you ?
and what about these V8 on some of the mickey mouse circuits then ? guess they
are not meant .. anyway
what about Bathurst ? will that track be in it also ?
