Notable threadOnline petition asking Sierra for GPL2
Andre Warringa posted a link to an online petition for Grand Prix Legends 2, which gathered about 2,800 signatures within a few days. Some doubted that Sierra would be swayed and joked about paying $1000 each, while others hoped for a Papyrus CART sim instead. The thread drifted into Goy Larsen sharing 1994 Bathurst footage and debates about video compression and newsreaders.

There's an option missing for how much we'd be prepared to pay. If we can
get 1000 names willing to cough up $1000 each I reckon we might persuade
Sierra to let Papy start work ;o)

Well, how do you guys say it: Puting your money where your mout is.
It's easyer to say $1000 than to actually pay $1000. Even if you mean it. :)

If I'm to cough up a thousand, I want a cut in the proceeds if the game
actually makes any money.

Exactly :o) My point is that if GPL's longevity here and on VROC, the fact
that it still sells from the bargain basement shelves, and the fact that
the guys at Papy would still love to make GPL2 doesn't persuade Sierra,
then I doubt a petition of even 20,000 will make any difference.
Mind you, 20,000 letters written simultaneously to Sierra HQ would be more
useful because letters take more effort to write and therefore carry more
weight in all customer relations departments.
Anyway, enough negativity for one day :o) I've added my name even though I
think it's chances of success are slightly smaller than my chances of
getting my GPLRank below -50 :o)

This makes me think.
If there were to be a GPL2, and a GPL2 rank: Would Greger Huttu be at the
top at that rank too? Is it possible to design a proper sim (with non-oval
tracks) that will not be dominated by Greger Huttu? ;-)
Papy has the know how. They know how to make proper sims. But has Sierra got
the balls to let Papy do anything else but another boring Nascar sim?

Why shrink it? -This is what cable/DSL is for! Just put it in a
multi-archive rar, set the split in your newsclient to 250kB and upload it
to alt.binaries.autos.simulator to annoy the crap out of the warez people.

While I agree with the principle :-), it would still take me 10 hours to
upload the stuff, 384/128, and you can bet that file number 1241 will be
corrupted for those interested in actually seeing it, so in that case
I'd rather upload a 500 MB swapfile and call it Quake4 beta or something

had a brief look at it, but as with most of these pro programs, it's a

I'm on a 704kb line so downloading should go pretty fast compared to your
uploading speed. As Jan said - I'd love to see it uncompressed.

Converting a movie to divx 5 makes a movie a LOT smaller in size while
you don't notice any drops in quality if done right. 500mb for a 10min
movie is really a waste of bandwidth :)

From one of my Bathurst tapes :-), "History of Bathurst" or something
like that, 3 180 min tapes from the early days to the present (96 I
think)
Server space isn't a problem, bandwidth is, having a 500 MB file up for
DL would kill any other activity on that line for quite a while
Besides, I'm not sure it would lose much in quality, I used an ordinary
TV tuner card to record it off my VCR and the tapes aren't the best
quality, but I could always burn it to a CD for you if you want it, or
you could borrow the tapes, after all I'm due to have look at the Mini
again one of these days :-)

I can email it to you if you want. Easy to use, converts video to
divx, and audio to mp3. Or whatever other format you want.
I can give you quick instructions if you like, there are lots of

Doesn't take long to learn how to rip an entire 100min DVD into a

time mind you :)

What are you using now? I hope you're not using OE.. that's a
nightmare to use for newsgroups. The retail version of Agent is better
than the free version, but I use Free Agent at work and for a free
program I think it's also extremely good. You do have to get used to
all the options a bit though.

At work I'm using Outlook 2000, and seriously, that's a wonderfull
piece of software. Unfortunately it takes a lot of work to make
Outlook more or less virus-resistant :-/
So at home I use IE 6 for browsing, Agent for newsgroups and Eudora
for email (not that Eudora is so special - but I've been using it
since the first release so it's more out of tradition :)
A newsreader that is really great for downloading many and/or large
binary files from usenet is Grabit. You can have multiple downloads
with Grabit, something you can't do with Agent afaik. Get it from
www.cnet.com, it's free.
And it's not your dumbness - OE is really a piece of crap to use for
newsgroups :)

I'm using the newsreader in AOL. I can download all the messages, respond
offline, then upload.

Try slrn. I think there even is a windows version. Best
newsreader on the planet (followed closely by trn).

If Unix-variants (Linux, etc.) ever want to make it into the mainstream
world in a big way, they should employ a marketing team to rename some of
their utilities and/or applications. You wanna sell a newsreader to Joe
Everybody? Don't name it "slrn" or "trn" ;)

There's no need to sell it in this particular case because it's
free ;-)
Anyway, you get the graphical varieties of "Knode" and "Pan"
and whatnot, those are "reasonably" named.
BTW, I'm looking forward to dicing it out with Uncle Goy at
Bristol and the Glen tomorrow. He's driving the FreeBSD car,
I'm the one in the blue fat Tux. Should be fun! Have you
noticed nobody ever puts MS logos on their cars? They might
crash! ;-)

Wrong uncle. The good-looking one drives the FreeBSD car. ;-) Hope to
be home in time to make the race, but don't know for sure.
Bite me, Goy. John's artwork is top notch. :-)
