Notable threadUS Pits releases GPL track converter for NR2002

Dave Noonan's team at the US Pits released a converter that brings GPL and other tracks, including Silverstone, Osterreichring, St. Jovite, Cleveland and Bullrun, into NASCAR Racing 2002, along with N3 short tracks. Users praised the results and imagined a GPL2 with NR2002 graphics and sound. Goy Larsen explained that very long tracks such as the Nürburgring and Spa could not be converted because of NR2002 track size limits, and the thread also debated whether the sim needed more short ovals.

A pox on you Andre ! :) Nashville and South Boston are two of the most "classic" bullrings in Nascar history, imo. Great fun to race on. Back in the early 60's, Nashville actually had steeper banking than Bristol at one time..........didn't last for long though. Gotta second this one; God bless Dave Noonan & co. Seeing the old haunts with full NR2002 graphic, sound and physics glory certainly sparks the imagination about what GPL2 could be. (pauses to mop up drool, imagining the current sound code applied to a 12,000 rpm V12) Wistfully looking forward to a *full* converter, filthy lucre in hand. Thank you Dave! all right! short tracks, and nashville, my favorite.. thnx guys, rob
Oh good....Nice going, Dave! Maybe this means an N2002 mip converter for track graphics will soon be available and I can fix the graphics for Sears Point in N2002 (which nobody except those of us out here at Sears who are simmers seem to care much about....understandable I guess). Also, maybe we'll finally see some of the US road courses available with good graphics and a decent car physics to drive them on? This can't be a bad deal for N2002 becoming the "universal sim." Next....hack the car physics and get the "car modelers" busy on sports cars! TP "John Simmons" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

While I'm at it... Just a few observations or thoughts on the 'converted' tracks... Silverstone: *Very* good in N2002 - just like I thought it would be. Seem to be slightly less grip in this version compared to N4.. Is that so? (this is good btw, as the track got buckets of grip and do probably provide too fast lap times as it is.. A bit exaggregated camber perrhaps?) Also noticed a few bugs, but perhaps the banked pit road is the worst one.. Seems like you missed a trace there Dave. Os-ring: What can I say... Better than the GPL version! This should be another very good track to race these cars at.... it's fast, wide and open. Grip is again very good. Atleast it seems like all those 100's of silly trackside objects (threes) are gone this time - great stuff.... :-) South Boston: Pretty useless if you ask me... it's just too short! Nashville: Better than S.Boston...... Reminds me of a cross between Bristol and Martinsville.. Short track guys should love this one. Only noticed a few clippings on the infield and some weird shadowing stuff at the base of the outside wall... Trenton: This track looked very good.... but felt *very* slippery... I didnt notice the temp. while i was testing but the grip level felt way too low - Imho. Mind you I only did a few laps using easy and fast setups, but still this is the only track I've managed to loose the back end going into a turn at moderate speed... St.Jovite: Great track in real life - utterly useless in N2002! Why: During my test session my FPS varied from over 100 in turn 1 to 22 at some spots! And that was just me, driving alone on the track! I assue this is due t the hopeless way the track is constructed.... A billion 3do-objects and lots of wicked clipping and view distances. At some places I noticed the shadow of the car disappeared completely as if I were driving under the track surface... other spots I saw multiple car-shadows, however that is possible! The track also seems to be unrealisticly narrow at spots. Then there the bits where you can drive thru bridges and such... :-( Cleveland: Wow this place is big!! It's so big that I get completely disorientated... More trakcside objects and such would have helped here. "F10-view" will probably be a huge advantage here because it so hoplessly hard to get a good overview of the track ahead. Bull Run: This is by far the best conversion of the Track I've seen... those that got the track from N4 earlier this week should go back and reconvert it! This version rocks! I've only done 3 laps so far, best being a low 1:50... I cannot recall how that compare to other version of the track though. A graphical update for this track would have been great!... Having said that... if someone could have taken the original track - removed / flattened the wakcy bits (thats those two wildly backed turns) - this track could be a real winner imho... it got lots of good overtaking places and it's open enough to suit these cars... Dave...? :-) Would have been awsome of say Goodwood, Brands, Spa or Kyalami could be converted too... some of there tracks should be real good in N2002 I think.. -- ed_

There is a patch for the GPL version to remove the pit-building and trucks at the s/f line. Did you apply that to the GPL version? Fixed the GPL version for me, and allthough I only did a couple of laps on St.Jovite in N2002 yesterday, I didn't notice any fps problems. I think the reason short tracks are so popular is that is what most people can relate to. Nothing like a good old Saturday night short track race on dirt or pavement. I can hear Gratton Raceway (road course) from where I live and have never been there, but I drive to another state for a short track race. N2/BGN/N99/N3 vs. N4/N2002 is a *huge* *huge* difference. I also raced S.Boston and the other BGN tracks alot online with N2/BGN.... but compared to what we got today that was crawling around on the floor vs. todays figure-skating! -- ed_ "John Pancoast" said: > Fwiw, I raced there probably a dozen times or so online in N3, great fun. > > > "Ed Solheim" SAID: > > Have you tried an online race at this track yet? > >
Didn't you just say that that was exactly why you *loved* short-tracks ??? I.E. all that "bumper to bumper door handle to door handle racing." - and " none of this follow the leader parade lap stuff." ?? Oki so the track might be joy to race for those who like they type of tracks.. but that was not what my inithial post was about - it was merely *my* observations and opinions on these new tracks. -- ed_ "MadDAWG" wrote: > > Thats the problem "most" people online don't know how to race a short track. > They have been brought up on the 1.5 milers and super speedways. That's true, but I don't see any reason why they still wouldn't be a blast. Sure, the sims are different, but the drivers aren't<G> -John "Ed Solheim" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:7mjA8.9658$[email hidden]... > N2/BGN/N99/N3 vs. N4/N2002 is a *huge* *huge* difference. > > I also raced S.Boston and the other BGN tracks alot online with N2/BGN.... > but compared to what we got today that was crawling around on the floorvs.

Marty is still a great track, the prob com is that so many of the guys on Sierra. don't know how to race at Marty. Achim "Goy Larsen" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]... > MadDAWG wrote:... > BullRun, WG, Sears and Marty, those where my tracks :-)...
If I may hazard a guess, what MadDAWG meant was 'bumper to bumper', but not 'one car on my roof and another one inside my trunk' ? ;-) Achim "Ed Solheim" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:esjA8.9674$[email hidden]... > Didn't you just say that that was exactly why you *loved* short-tracks ??? > I.E. all that "bumper to bumper door handle to door handle racing." - and" > none of this follow the leader parade lap stuff." ??...
Yeah my two statements do kinda contradict each other don't they. :) What I should have said is more along the lines of running side by side for laps waiting for one or the other to slip. The problem with short tracks online is most people online is they have this "don't touch me" type attitude which at short tracks rubbing is racing. Perfect example of this was a race at Richmond the other night. I follow this guy for about 6 laps. I was close but wasn't bumping him. Coming out of 2 he gets loose and chases it up the hill to save it. Of course this is my break and I get under him. we rub but nothing major. Neither of us spin and all he looses is his position to me when I bet him into turn 3 nothing more. The next thing I see is all kinds of #$$ hole coming across the top of the screen. Of course I did laugh when right after the last one to come across the screen my spotter comes on with "wreck in turn 1" and next time I go by guess who is all smashed up. Guess he should have spent less time typing :) MadDAWG
IMHO the prob is that people have deficiencies on the 'running side by side for laps waiting for one or the other to slip' side <g> Most races I've seen at Martinsville on Papy servers looked like the world championship of incompetent driving rather than races. The prob of most guys at the short tracks is that these tracks are far beyond their abilities, both in terms of driving (handling the car) and racecraft. I think btw one should avoid touching another car entirely in online racing, as warping all too easily creates a mess out of what in real life would have been mere friendly fender rubbing. But that certainly is a minor prob at the short tracks for me <g> Achim "MadDAWG" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]... > Yeah my two statements do kinda contradict each other don't they. :)What > I should have said is more along the lines of running side by side forlaps > waiting for one or the other to slip. Why would you try to type while racing a short track ANYWAY? I'm always scared of ANY kind of contact on line for fear one of us will warp a tiny bit and cause a massive crash. Anybody who watches Nascar on TV realizes that on a short track, it's EXPECTED that you'll have to shoulder your way by sometimes. I'd love to believe that can be done online but I think the technology isn't quite there yet (except on a LAN).
