I can't remember the last time I've so eagerly anticipated the release of a

Off-topic: anticipation of Star Wars Episode II
David Cook asked whether others were looking forward to Attack of the Clones. Opinions split between those burned by The Phantom Menace and fans like ymenard, who had followed every detail and promised it would redeem the saga. The thread turned into debates about Jar Jar, Palpatine's scheming and the prequel story.

I walked out of Episode One after half an hour - it was a load of balls.
Lucas should allow his actors to act instead of over directing them into
characterless puppets of his very own multi million pounds play-thing.
See no reason why this one will be any different.

Ack.. That means you paid the man! Next time wait till you've read the
reviews before you give him your money. If it's crap (like EP1 was)
wait for the bugger to hit the TV or just download it to laugh at it instead.

recommend the sequel?

Harry Knowles from the "Ain't Cool News" website, (who trashed EP1 if I
recall correctly) saw a rough cut and thought it was great. I can say with
certainty that there will be some who rant and rave against EP2, but the
'buzz' so far seems positive.

Since there is no possible way to determine the quality of the sequel
without actually seeing it, a "strong" opinion of any kind is nothing more
than silly speculation. I'm pretty certain Episode 2 will be the best Star
Wars yet and one of the 10 greatest films of our generation. Keep in mind
that I CAN make this claim because I'm psychic. BTW, careful crossing the
street later this month, sometime around May 24th. ;0)
It seems like you've already made up your mind about the film based on
Episode 1 so actually seeing it may NOT be necessary for you to form an
opinion. You'll dislike it on principle damn it, all 5 pounds worth! ;0)

Some of us have seen more then just trailers. I know every darn inche
possible that is in AOTC. I've read it all, the book, the script, the old
scripts, the storyboards, the soundtrack, I've seen every possible footage
on earth and I've seen about every Lucasfilm LTD picture for the movie.
I already knew before TPM was released that it would be a hit, but also a
miss (it did 450million dollars, let's never forget that). I already know
that AOTC is a hit, a pure and simple hit.

I liked it too (I saw it twice), but it wasn't what I was hoping for. It had
some great moments but a generally lame story.
I'll keep going to them as long as George makes them but I wish he would
spend less time on the "wow, cool effects" factor and more on the "wow,
great story" factor. And reduce the "cutesy kid" and "Jar Jar" factors to
zero. God I hated that little brat they picked to play Anakin!
>"Tim Miser" <[email hidden]> wrote
> Hey, am I the only person in this galaxy who LIKED episode one????
No. It's a good movie with some script problems. George hadn't directed
for two decades, and it showed. It wasn't great like A New Hope, nor
excellent like The Empire Strikes Back. It had it's moments, it had the
Star Wars background. That's enough for me ;)
It's a prelude to the other 5 movies. After knowing everything about AOTC,
I can see that it did it's role pretty well.

It was on purpose, I'm absolutely sure now. Anakin still has his "brat"
attitude, but it's much more complex. My main problem with TPM was in the
script. Jar Jar and Anakin could had been much better giving the movie some
better scriptments in certain portions of the movies. Oh the DROP THE
MIDICHOLORIANS (which don't appear in E2).

Nope. I think much of the dislike is of the "Hey! I'm cool too! I
didn't like it either!" variety (not the first or last movie to get
such.)
I found the undercurrents to be nice, and the movie to be a great example
of a start of an epic, one that has to introduce lots of history to set
up what has to come later. Of course, the start is generally less
exiting and, well, epic than what is to come and, given a choice, I'd
much rather watch ANH or ESB.

Obvious from the trailers, really. I'm just hoping the actor is a bit better
than the last. (Always a problem with Kid actors--the skill of the craft is
generally lacking.)

To be fair, Lucas has always been heavy-handed with his scripts. But I'd
certainly agree with your assessment, with a note that Anakin's part would
have been helped by finding an amazing (and probably about non-existant) level
of acting skill in a kid.
> Oh the DROP THE
>MIDICHOLORIANS (which don't appear in E2).
Why? It makes sense that the scientific knowledge of a society (the jedi)
that study the force will be at a high level. Finding various ways to
scientifically measure just makes sense, even for a "mystical" thing. I
forget who had that quote about a sufficiently high level of science appearing
as magic. Of course, by the time we get to ANH, much of that science is
basically forgotten or, really, ignored as unimportant.

I'm still not totally convinced about some meta-approach to the whole Saga
by Lucas. Basically, if you take the entire 6 movie in it's entirety, the
whole thing started because of a dispute of trade taxation. That is,
absolutely lame and uncambellian (an important term for mythological works
like Star Wars). You can't start the wheel that will tumble the entire
Universe with such small unimportant thing. Actually, you could, but Lucas
just under-writes it in the first movie. 20 minutes after the start of the
movie, nobody even cares about the dispute, it's way back in the mind of the
viewer. It doesn't show itself back in the movie. It's just popped there,
for no reason.
There is also some other things, mostly the translation of the galactic
republic into the empire, and some sociological changes between the state of
mind of how people act in the prequels versus the original trilogy. There
was a sense of despair that I can't see forming itself that much abruptly in
only 20 or so years between Episode III and ANH.

I wouldn't say a 21 year old person is a "kid" ;)

Yes, "non-existant" is the thing here. It would had been the same with any
kind of kid under 10 year old. The same self-centered attitude would had
been present. It was a mistake from Lucas' mind to start the trilogy at
that level instead of further into the timeline.
appearing

It's just like I wrote above, uncambellian. I still understand that the
Jedi would share information that nobody else would have access to, but the
viewer doesn't need to know that. We can easily assume that. The
explanation Obi-Wan and Yoda say in the original trilogy is perfect. I also
still sense the gap between E3 and ANH is too small. Note that I'm just
stretching the problems that I have, they are over-shadowed by my deep love
and understanding of Lucas' vision and Universe he created ;-)

Actually, nobody knows for sure about that. Lucas never really told (except
some hints in the EU) if Palpy planified the whole deal or if he jumped on

Well I've read it of course also. I'm tickled at the current rumour that
the digital projection of Episode II will be different from the one in
normal theatres.

Worst. Post. Ever. ;-P (joking)
After 3 years of debates about Jar-Jar, as they are still raging on the
Internet these days (just look at r.a.m.c-f), I think most of the people
don't really care about Gungans as if they are unrealistic. It's more of
the pertinence of the character. It's very rare these days that people hate
Jar-Jar because he was a full CGI character. Actually, the fact that they
discuss about him like any other major character proves that Lucas did his
work well blending him in the movie, I say.

hmmm, I always thought if anything the story started too late into the
timeline. I think it would have been cool to have seen the story behind the
creation of Annakin and the quest for the 'perfect' Jedi instead of start
episode one when he' already 6 or so years old. Maybe someday there will be
an Episode 0.1?!

Huh? This seems a perfect thing, to me. Movements of fate/force/whatever
taking on a butterfly-effect sort of thing. That said, Palpatine was pulling
strings, setting things up to undermine the Senate, etc. We could have gotten
more of that, certainly, but we'd need more movies.
But why not a trade dispute? A group that can be aimed into doing your
bidding, get things in motion, then make subtle adjustments as things occur.

Really? I sensed that things weren't all rosy, myself. Areas where the
Senate could do little...nor the Jedi, for that matter. Things seemed
topheavy, with a government that seemed, for the most part, unresponsive. The
Jedi seemed complacent, to an extent. (And some must have realized the
significance of the phrase "bring balance to the force.")
I was referring to Lloyd from the first movie, but the problem can exist with
young adult actors as well.

And I'll disagree, with a note that even going earlier was possible. I know
I've mentioned, on this board, and in discussion with you, that I think we'll
learn a bit more about Ani's ancestry in this movie. I think things have been
in motion, but this was a good place to jump in as it is the exact episode
that thrust Palpatine into power and began Anakin's training.

Not gone bad, certainly, but very complacent.

Nice, but it is one that was from much more worldly Jedi.

Yes. A dispute for certain. They would seem to go without saying. Would it
have gone to this extent? Not sure, probably not. Palpy provided support and
a bit of nudging, probably not only in this situation, either. That said, it
seemed to me that much of the problems of the world were there even without
Palpy's interference.
Remember, Lucas loves to throw out rumors. I remember the big one, when I was
young, that Obi Wan would be revealed as Luke's father in ESB. Lucas also
loves to go back and change what we thought we knew, especially in terms of
character relationships, so I'm expecting a big bombshell in this next movie.

Might I suggest that, the next time you think about watching a movie, you make
sure it isn't Science Fiction or Fantasy. Those movies aren't for you. (And
many would say you will miss nothing.)

Well after Ep1 and reading EP 2 I think the goal for attacking Naboo was to
show the senate the need for a Republican Army, but they failed to capture
the planet and therefor Palyp would not have had any support for this. Not
giving away anything from the next movie but it seems he is doing similiar
(shit) disturbing to worry everyone into needing this clone army. the only
way this couldn't be true if Palpy and Sidious were not the same person.
Otherwise how would you explain him attacking a planet on one hand and
fighting for that planets protection the next. Least thats how its looking
to me....its not so much the Trade federation....never has been....the Sith
have been egging it all on....for what reason? To give Palpy his army and
the strength to get to Episode 4 :)

Erm. Cutting through the horrid english, but right-on, basically.
Palpy/Sidious are obviously one and the same, to the point that the actor
playing Palpy/Sidious played the emperor in ep 6. And yes, he seems big at
behind-the-scenes manipulation. Makes him quite a nice villian, really.
