Settling the RASCAR three-digit car number debate
btgoss pointed out that three-digit numbers appear in NASCAR Busch entries, in response to John Simmons's objections to them in RASCAR. Simmons said he had only called them atypical and preferred two digits for practical sim reasons. The thread became light-hearted ribbing about paint-scheme 'rules', and several drivers switched numbers, with B Farmer giving up #11 to Goy Larsen.

well I'm not sure if he said they were illegal or not but its pretty obvious

I was just trying to be a bit sarcastic, and of course forgot to include
some html <sarcasm> tags.
Someone had voiced displeasure with the 3 digit numbers, in reference to
them not being "in character" with officially accepted numbers from NASCAR.
And I just thought is was funny to look at that entry list, reminds me of
the entry list in a Sierra Pick-Up race.
But to my knowledge no one has said they are illegal.
I wish we could use letter and numbers on our cars. Then I could run a
famous number for the Boston area. 4Q.

Actually, I think NASCAR said no numbers 200 or above when DW tried to run
Tim Flock's old number a while back. I think 3 digit numbers in the 100's
are acceptable though somewhat rare.

I never said it wasn't legal. I just said it wasn't *typical*, and
that's Busch, NOT Winston Cup...
Besides that, the reasons I cited for not using 3-digit numbers (1xx and
3xx) were sim-related.

Throwing a fit? I prefer to think of it as being very opinionated.
Throwing a fit would be something along the lines of threatening not to
race in RASCAR if everyone doesn't stop using 3-digit numbers.
As far as paint jobs, (and remember, this is just my opinion) some of
them are severely lacking in quality, completeness, and/or realism.
I have three cars in the current RASCAR set that are nothing more than a
single-color with a car number on them:
A) I changed Ed's so I could see the number better - the car is darker
and the number is yellow with red trim.
B) I changed Tony Rickjard's, but only enough to see the numbers
better. BTW Tony, what is that green snake thing on the side of your
car?
C) The green #99 and primer #45 are still in their original
configurations, but I'll eventually get to them too (unless they come up
with something new in the interim).
I have two (or maybe three) that don't conform to nascar-mandated number
positions/size. I haven't changed any of them.
I made an offer to paint cars for people (and indeed have several that
are already available), and some folks have taken me up on it (#1, #9,
and #28).
I even re-painted a couple without any formal (or informal) request by
the drivers (#49, and #55) and posted them if they want to use them.
I stopped saying anything about it and just taking care of it on my end.
If there's a specific sponsor involved, I try to keep it, but I'm not
adverse to just re-doing the whole car if I get compeletely annoyed with
it.
If I'm gonna be following everyone around during cautions, I at least
want something pleasant and at least close to realistic to stare at.

ROFL, now that's the JS we all know and love :-)
Sorry to disappoint you John, but "my" number has been taken, both of
them, so my car will have a 3 digit number, 311
3 for Dale and 11 for Larry Perkins, a Castrol Commodore.....oh well,
almost, Castrol Chevy, *with* the black hood :-), thx to all who pointed

Well I guess I break all your stock car painting rules John.
This car is an Alfa Romeo (not a Ford, Pontiac, Dodge or Chevrolet) so there is
one rule broken.
The numbers are as we see on touring cars or other car racing series in Europe.
Recognition is by colour schemes and subtle differences (like door mirror
colours or bumper trim) between team mates.
The symbols of the Alfa Romeo badge are symbols of Milan - the snake is from the
Visconti family crest that represented the virtues of military effort, i.e., to
devour your enemy. The left part of the badge is the red cross on white
background which recalls the heroic deeds of the Milanese Giovanni da Rho during
the First Crusades of the 11th century
ALFA stands for Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili - Romeo was added when
Nicola Romeo took ownership of ALFA.
Be prepared to be devoured...
So pure fantasy John - the concept of pretty but fragile Alfa Romeos in Nascar
seems rather far fetched - then again we have got used to Ferraris being more
reliable than Mercedes in F1...
Cheers

I agree with what you say, Achim, just for the record, I did not mind one
bit "remaking" my skin (changed from 305 to 59)
59 was the first year of production of the mini so I kept a number with
"meaning" for me.
Besides, the 3 digit number was just a pain to line up on the sides nicely
anyway. I *think* I followed the right "rules" for NASCAR stickering, and
used the packs of contingency stickers because they looked a lot better
than the ones I had anyway (had to find an image converter to get them out
of psp format but no biggy).
I like painting car skins (or more precisely, stickering up the excellent
2003 pontiac template I downloaded) so I enjoyed the excercise.
Now I have done Badtz Maru, I have a compulsion to create the Hello Kitty
Winston Cup team :o)
Anyone want a nice pink n white car painting up?
(worth a shot!)
cheers

For me, they're rules, for everyone else, they're merely guidelines that
everyone better damn well follow if they know what's good for them. :)

It has EVERYTHING in the world to do with how well the guy races. :)
And considering your're in a 3-digit numbered car, your racing is pretty
decent, although I can tell that you're not yet quite accustomed to the
"let the #43 car pass you on every lap" rule.
I don't care if they put logos/decals on their car or not. I would
simply like to see the numbers visible and in the right places.

I don't know about the busch series, but I remember hearing something
on the show "Totally Nascar" that the numbers in the cup series had to
be 2 digit numbers. I can maybe see why. I believe that the scoring
pole or what ever it's called at the track only allows for 2 digits.

Btw, while I'm very cooperative when it comes to practical purposes like

this aspect, but I think we can be a little forgiving in terms of what
everyone perceives as being a good looking car or what he thinks symbolizes

Car #99 here.
Feel free to do anything you like to my car. I just painted it as I did to
give an honest (and hopefully funny) indication of my soon to be obvious
"rookie" status here in RASCAR.
My plan was to show up during practice sessions, drive a few laps and then
start at the back of the grid. Then I would see if I could even race with
any of the tailenders. If not. . . well nothing ventured . . . As long
as I stayed out of the way while being lapped by the leaders I would cause
no harm. Just hold my line, close my eyes and pray. :O)
But then came race day last weekend and I got as far as finding the epickett
server listed on my screen. . . and then I chickened out.
I'd like a place to race against people with the same attitudes found here;
good clean racing with sportsmanship prevailing (and the odd needle after
the race) but I don't want to cause any problems on the track. It must be a
generational thing (I'm older the most here) but I'd be more embarassed by
making a mistake that took someone else out then he (she) would be angry
for my doing so.
I'll keep practicing against the AI during the week on the tracks to be used
the following weekend and if I get a sudden burst of confidance I just might
show up. Look for me in you mirror, but back . . . way back.

Everyone's a rookie, especially that Joachim guy. :)
Just go ahead and join up. I personally would appreciate another
backmarker to keep me company at the superspeedways. :)

We fully expect you to show up this weekend. If you don't, you're not
playing fair because we generally try to ridicule everyone on Sunday as
a result of the previous day's race results.

All this just for a painted number on the side of the cars! ;-)
I've asked since N2 to have *letters* in the car's number, so somebody could
have #33a or #104b.

For me, that #128 is just a personal thing - it's been 'my' number since I
was able to chose a number in online racing, and I've been using it for
years. It's like a bit of a luck charm, and old habit, simply 'my' number.
Yeah yeah I know, sentimental I am... <bg>

Well, if he uses that hyperspeed varnish they've been advertising recently,
you know the one that's so sleek that your top speed increases by 50mph,
that indeed is not good sportsmanship. OTOH, if he puts enough decals on,
the additional weight will slow him down so much to equilibrate the effect
of the hyperspeed varnish ;-)

Thank you Sir.

I've given up on letting someone pass, since recently the pacecar crushed me
to pieces when I tried to let it pass <g>

Nope, with the decals, that wasn't you. And your idea to put numbers on the
car is actually sensationally good. I've immediately put numbers on my car
after I understood the beauty of the concept. AAMOF, I was going to chose
either 1, 2 or 8, but then I couldn't make up my mind as to which one to
chose, and put them all on. Better one number too many than one too few,
right?

You know, I was on purpose avoiding the use of foreign words like 'tolerate'

I actually left it primered on purpose because it reminds me of my younger days

Goy, if you want #11, no problem by me... been messing around
