Just got my 3d glasses last night. Plugged them in this morning, tried em
out for approximately an hour.
Set up went just fine. The drivers installed perfectly. The setup
screens are added to your display properties sheets. ( Using Win98).
Leaving everything on default I entered N2002 and immediaely had to adjust
the stereo seperation. There are two images that need to be merged in order
to provide an accurate representation of depth. I was seeing two tachs
spread pretty far apart. The stereo separation keys allow you to bring the
images closer together. Fully merged gives the least depth perception and
fully seperated is way too exagerated. You have to play with it to get a
comfortable perspective that doesn't hurt your eyes.
Okay, got it set and went driving. It's 3d. You look out the window net
and there is depth. You look out the windscreen and there is depth ( though
I got the visual impression that the nose of my car ended about a foot from
the windscreen). The tach hangs in the air in front of you, the speed
ticker floats as well. The rearview mirror looks like you can hang a pair of
dice from it. Pretty cool.
Okay, so I drove in heavy traffic to see if the perspective was real or an
illusion that might cause wrecks. Daytona night, full field, starting at the
back. Drove the whole race in traffic, nose to tail, packed like sardines
and never touched a soul. Drove Richmond, same.
It takes a bit of an adjustment on the eyes. After about an hour I got a
low grade headache so I adjusted the settings back to beginner. Could be
allergies so I'm not real sure yet.
I run a 17 inch monitor, Geforce 2 mx400 on a P3 866, 256megs o' ram. I
set the sim resolution to 640x480 ( I know) so I could use a 100 refresh
rate. Tell you what, the rez didn't bother me at all. 800x600 was okay as
well. Using OpenGL my frame rates didn't seem affected significantly. Maybe
a 10 percent drop at most. Haven't tried D3D.
Love the things so far. Haven't done GPL yet but will after work tonight.
More info to come.

Where can you find info on these things?

I have these glasses as well now, very cool. With GPL it felt like you could
actually reach out and grab the tail pipe of the car in front of you.

I am using a large fresnel lens in front of my monitor, and it gives a
fairly good 3D effect and makes everything look really big, at times
you feel like you are really looking through a car's windshield. Has
anyone compared 3D glasses against using a fresnel lens? My biggest
complaint with the fresnel lens is that text can be very blurry near
the edges of the screen, so I am very curious about the 3d glasses,
because I agree that it is much easier to drive car sims with good 3d
(easier to see turns and easier to drive in traffic). How does text
look with 3d glasses? I am looking forward to gavel's report about
GPL!

Agreed. The review on simracingworld.com was excellent. I won't
race without mine. It's such a difference when you can gauge true
depth. My cornering is actually improved. IMO these are a must have.
Anyone can feel free to email me with any questions.

I'm thinking about getting a pair for N2002 and EverQuest, so every customer
comment is welcome.

Hi!
The articles about edimension glasses are impressive. But since Im
soon going to buy geforce3/4 bundled with Asus 3D -glasses Id like to
know how different these glasses really are. For what Ive read the
glasses seem to use exact technique (And the Asus glasses are not so
great Ive heard).
If someone has a link to any comparisons between those two or other 3D
-glasses and would be kind enought to submit the url I would
appreciate it.
Cheers,
LM

I wonder about possible screen flicker. I can spot a monitor running at 60
Hz by it's flickering, from 75 Hz onwards I'm fine. Since the refresh rate
is divided among the left and right images, would I need something like 150
Hz on the monitor to be comfortable? Or is it only the combined refresh rate
that counts?
Bart Westra
With a refresh rate of around 90 - 100hz , I could not see any flickering.
As an aside - I was wondering whether if you guys decide to buy the glasses
as a result of our review at SimRacingWorld whether you could possibly
return to the article and click on our link to buy them as that way we get
credit from Edimensional for doing so. Of course it is entirely up to you
though :))

But can you see flicker in a normal monitor at 60 Hz? Most people can't... A
comment from someone who can see the 60 Hz flicker would be most valuable.
If you want to test yourself, set the refresh rate to 60 Hz and then
maximize an empty Notepad screen so that you get a white display. You see it
best by looking a bit past the monitor.

I actually asked about the difference as well. From the information
I've picked up browsing the edimensional reviews, sites have said
there is no comparrison to other brands. Besides the fact that the
ASUS glasses look rather bulky and annoying, I've read in other
newsgroups they just don't perform very well and are very flickering.
I did a lot of homework on these glasses before I threw down my
hundred bucks, so i'll try and pass along any information i have. I
know simhq.com has a review that said the edimensional glasses are
better than the other brands and overclockersrip.com also said the
ASUS ones were junk compared to these. That and the very fast
response from edimensioanl with answers to my questions pushed me over
the edge.

It actually doesn't split it totally in half, you should be fine if
you can get a normal rate of at least 85Hz. I use mine between 85Hz
and 100 and it looks very clear with virtually no flicker at all,
especially at 100hz.

of problem with one of the three machines I've tried them on (my main
machine, of course). When I plug the dongle in, I get a bunch of
small horizontal lines through the display. This happens even on the
boot screens, so it isn't a Windows problem. GeForce2 GTS. I've been
working with tech to solve this, they are very responsive but are at a
loss. Any ideas?
Otherwise they're great.
