Excellent so far. Better everything. Sound, graphics (like the grid girls
:-) ), menu, setup system, and controller setup worked fine with my Ferrari
FF wheel. None of the old bugs are there.
Wet weather is fantastic. Even the mirrors get drops on them, obscuring your
view a bit.
Anyone else have lag when turning your wheel. There's a very noticeable
delay with my wheel.
What are the digital controller rates?
Like they say in the read me, it's a "work in progress demo" so I hope
everyone will realx and not go overboard with criticism as if it's the
finished game.

Impressions of the EA F1 2002 demo
David G Fisher and others praised the F1 2002 demo for improved graphics, sound, wet weather, AI and controller setup. However, the split-axis pedal bug, where the throttle responds only after about half travel, remained, and some wheels needed negative force-feedback settings. Debate followed over whether GPL remained the benchmark for F1 sims given ISI's weak multiplayer, and Grant Reeve explained a DXTweak fix for the pedal issue.
Automated summary.

Crap. I didn't notice before, but the damn slit axis bug (short travel) is
still there. Didn't notice it the first time around because I had TC on.

Also the "feature" where you have to set the FF to negative for some
controllers is still there. On the split axis thing I finally did give
up and do the DXTweak trick for F1 2001, and it still works for F1 2002.
It works, it does not affect any other controllers, it fixes ALL ISI
games all the way back to SCGT, and it does not affect Papyrus games.
So the only time I need to change it back to normal is for NASCAR Heat
or NFS:PU, both of which I hardly ever play. I still think ISI needs to
fix this, but at least I know how to work around it.

Also the physics feel a whole lot better, especially in wet weather, and
I haven't even tried the high rate switch yet. Overall I am highly
encouraged.

No lag here.

The digital controller rates are for gamepad and keyboard users.

How about if I go overboard with enthusiasm, would that be okay? ;o)
GPL still IS the benchmark for F1 sims in terms of multiplayer, replay
capability, and just general user friendliness. Poor multiplayer in a new
racing game is a joke IMHO. GPL is getting close to being 4 years old and
has multiplayer far better than F12001. I'm pretty much tired of the
hearing the FIA won't let 'em do it stuff.
By the way, I can host 4 broadband clients on my cable modem using the LAN
bandwidth core.ini settings in GPL and fill the rest of the field with AI
cars. All players can see ALL of the cars ALL of the time. Try that in
F12001. I'll bet money you won't be able to do that in F12002 either. I've
heard of Gamespy support so maybe there is a glimmer of hope. If they can
match GPL in the multiplayer area and clean up the rest of the user
interface, then GPL will finally start to gather dust.

There may be hope. Among the gamespy-things in the F1 2002-files, there are
lines like
max multiplayer = 16, and modem < 56k allowed internet. etc.

How would one set the FF to negative? -My controller is affected... it pulls
into the turn instead of pushing against the steering motion and it fights
against straigtening the wheel instead of being self-aligning. Quite
confusing.
I don't know any of the F1 2001 tricks as I wasn't able to play it due to
hardware limitations.
Jan.

In the FF-setup you have Force strength.. this goes to +100% or to -100%
On my Logitech i need to set it at -100% (inverted forces) to make it right.

Now *that's* a benchmark!
Sure GPL got good multiplayer features, but the physics, sound and grapichs
(original that is) is miles behind. And dont get me wrong - I completely
agree with you that F12002/2001 is a disappointment compared to GPL... as
I've said many times before; GPL gave us 20 cars online racing over 3 years
ago, and any developer who fail to atleast mach that today - isn't even
trying Imho.

just frustrated that F12001 was sooooooo close to replacing GPL for me

I only had time for a couple of laps, but first impressions were VERY
good. Just a couple of quick laps, and the driving simply -felt-
amazingly good. Can't wait to try the retail version.
Oh, and PITBABES!!!!
Andre
Jan, you are a perfect illustration of why they need to fix this - even
experienced gamers are not aware of this "feature", and because of this
they end up with it set incorrectly and therefore walk away thinking the
FF is crap. I'm glad Andreas was able to help you, but imagine somebody
who doesn't use the internet regularly - they would be screwed.

There are a few things I don't like from Win98. Win95 somehow feels
"closer to the command line" to me. (and obviuously, I like that feeling)
Who knows... I went from 95A to 95B because of the AGP acceleration
and partly because of USB support. Maybe in the end I'll go to Win98
(SE, of course) partly because of full USB support, but that by itself
isn't enough... Hmmm... it has some good networking features too. I
know what to do, in a few days (or probably, by the end of the month),
once I build another PC with all the parts I've discarded after upgrading
my PC (processor, RAM, video card, sound card, hard disk -though I have
that one as secondary right now-) plus a spare network card and a MoBo
I just bought for $1.25 +shipping, I'll test Win98SE on that machine...

the player to even know about it. I believe all the code has to do is
look at the sign of the axis used for left and right steering, and then
it will know what sign to use for the force feedback. Even if the
player jumps right to the FF screen and only later goes to set up the
controller it wouldn't matter, because the sign check can be made after
the physics engine is running.

I've just been playing the demo for the last 2 hours and I'm very impressed.
First it runs very well and looks very good indeed and the handling seems
very good indeed, very controllable and slides in a nice progressive
fashion. However the thing that impressed me the most was the AI. Not once
in about 10 races did I get punted off by stupid AI and that's a first for a
racing game. The AI did it's very best to avoid incidents but at the same
time was agressive enough to fight back, oh what fun I've been having!
I've got really quite excited about this game and I just can't wait for the
retail version to come out
Some Call Me Tim
An input configuration that works would be nice too (it's sad that
ISI's controller config is nowhere near the one Papyrus was using
almost 10 years ago). And physics that are semi-believable when you
deviate from the ideal racing line. I won't even get started on
single car collisions and car-to-car collisions.

I was amazed to find that I could configure my Momo wheel and Redline
pedals in seconds few with this demo. I'm not seeing any split axis bug
either.
Jason, why don't you try the demo first, instead of just talking out of

I think you'll find that you're probably only getting half pedal travel
though. You need to use double values in DXtweak to use all available
travel on these pedals.

Not if you change the axis for the pedals. Go to the controller setup select
the desired control and press the pedal to set it.
Bart Westra
Right. People have been calling it the "split axis bug" and what that means
is that split axis works, but the throttle doesn't respond until you press
the gas pedal approximately 50%. In combined axis, the throttle responds
immediately. They may have it fixed by the time the gsae is released, but it
will be f**ken ridiculous if they don't.

It's a lot better than the last one.
You can now see your axes which is a huge improvement for debugging
purposes.
I use a momo, split axis 98se and have had no problems as long as you set
the force feedback to negative which you have to do on a momo for some
reason that still escapes me.
After fiddling with the GUI I did take my tweaked .plr settings from f12k1
over though. I like no throttle vibration but I REALLY like having the
brake vibration on the wheel.
Gotta love a game which is configurable through text files.
And I have to say this game is incredibly good to drive. From the default
setups for Australia it looks like they have addressed the high speed vs
low speed grip problem too.
I can not wait for the real version.

Nope - no lag at all. In fact the at center performance on f12k2 WIP demo
is better than f12k1. Extremely smooth and no lag.
w98se, momo with split axis pedals.

The nice thing with the new demo is the little axis display on the left
so you can actually see if this 50% throttle bug exists.
(I have never seen this behaviour but of course I don't use the same
OS/wheels as the people who have seen this bug).

True, but the demo is supposed to give a decent representation of the final
product. If the demo sucks, or doesn't work on your rig, that wouldn't exactly
fill you with confidence to buy the retail version...

cleanly for F1-2001 was to zero the center calibration value
for each pedal. That turns that axis into a single directional
axis, which is what F1-2001 assumes all pedal axes to be. This
is compatable with all other games except the ones that really
don't understand seperate axis pedals, or CMR2 which is hell
bent on reading my brake pedal in the wrong direction.
Now I have some Actlabs peformance pedals, and they're all set
up this way by default, so they work just right in F1-2001.

Actually, since I made that post I've given the demo a whirl. It has
the exact same controller problems as were present in their last 4
"simulations" (SCGT, F1 2000, F1 2000 CS, F1 2001). I also see that
the wings still work the same regardless of the car's orientation to
its direction of travel (I like that you can enter a turn literally
sideways and the downforce still keeps your brakes from locking -
assuming that's why the brakes never lock in this game)
Also, I think that judging someone's past work is a perfectly valid
way to appraise them. ISI's products have consistently been plagued
with basic problems. I think it is perfectly fair to assume that
those problems will be present in all of their releases until they
release something that doesn't contain those problems. If a baseball
player is hitting .220 after 5 years of his career, you aren't going
to think that next year he'll hit .350.
Jason
Name a better modern F1 sim? If this series is "plagued" then I'm immune to
its disease. I certainly enjoy the enormous good things over the bad. It
gets better every "edition" and I'm just happy a sim of this quality is
still being continually improved and produced at all for that matter.
Racing simulations are hardly thriving.

Yeah, it was quite difficult to tell in F12001 if you had fixed it or not.
It also gives you a better idea of how the sensitivity system works.
