Flame warByron Forbes on iRacing, and the 'iPonzi' accusations

Byron Forbes described joining iRacing on a three-month deal and called it the best sim available despite some issues. A poster calling it 'iPonzi' argued its physics were no better than older sims and that pro series winners were just exploiting it, while others defended its accuracy, the iRacing World Championship and the VW TDI Cup prize. Posts also covered auto-renewal billing complaints and Dale Earnhardt Jr's sim racing.

For the noobs - http://www.iracing.com/home.html A few months back I get an email from iRacing letting me know about a 3 months for $25 deal. Sounds too good to resist and I feel an itch to scratch so I go and spend over $1000 on new computer, G25 and seat! :) Though there is the odd issue or 2, overall it is the best thing since GPL. I had said in here donkeys years ago that the sim racing world was screaming out for something like this (i.e. official racing series run by sim company) and upon my iRacing experience I can tell you all that I was dead right. The helter skelter atmosphere is gone. There is no need to fish around for patches, mods, tracks and then leagues - it is all there in 1 place for you. It is fantastic to simply be able to hook up your stuff and go racing. My view presently is that the new iteration of the physics engine is so taxing on the cpu that some of the complaints (and they are mostly minor) about things will get fixed as cpu power allows them to add more bells and whistles. Just a ton of great stuff on the horizon - Indianapolis has just been released and will be shortly followed by the Aussie V8, including Phillip Island, the Indy cars and Indy Lights, CR-6 Corvette, etc. They have also taken a further step of merging the simulator with the real world with the launch of inRacingNews - http://www.inracingnews.com/ as well as obviously increasing public awareness about the world of sim racing. Recently a plan was released for sponsorship at all levels as well. No, only blown up by over revving. All cars are autos when in 1st gear! :) Big deal?

Not too big. But shows an underlying tendency on the part of the devs to panda to wimps and crybabies.
Gota say if you race RL there is no other way to go. I just tried Summit Point in rFactor (a converter GPL track AFAIK) and it wasn't even close. iRacing has the tracks and physics down, all you cryers and moaners are just fucking jealous because you don't have the money to spend. Admit it and move on. Nothing compares to it regardless of how much pissing and moaning goes on. You either can afford it or you can't. Stop whining and move on.

When I first joined I had a single core 3gig cpu/8500 graphics - no where near enough. Now have a quad 3.2gig/8500 graphics - no problems. Point being, the present physics engine is already taxing the cpu big time. To anyone who's used Papy stuff over the years it is clear that a ton of the bells and whistles are simply not there yet and I'll bet the cpu tax is the reason - as technology catches up/gets cheaper, all this sort of stuff will be addressed. It is important to remember that presently they have X amount of series running - there are still a lot of people who don't even have a clutch. As the membership grows and the feasibility to add new series increases, I'm sure we will start to see series where auto clutch and auto blip are disabled and to run in those series will require the use of a clutch. Obviously, at that time, engines will no doubt be able to stall! :)

Alan I believe that's about 5 weeks away i.e. the next *iteration* of iRacing with leagues Personally, after being on iRacing for a few months I wouldn't give you 2 cents for leagues anymore - I race when I please - when it suits me down to the ground - not according to a restrictive league schedule.

I like it when people talk big when they are so anonymous. I wonder if you'd call me that face-to-face? But don't bother to reply. I blocked you, as I've done before. Alan

By leagues I mean my own league, not something that iRacing creates. That's one of the reasons I don't mess with iRacing. They want you to pay for the service and then they tell you when you can race. Alan

I see .. :) good software but not as strong underneath as you would expect for the money or as perceived & touted by the far right either. --- As with most things, it isn't for all people. Different people get different value out of various products and services. It comes down to the individual deciding for their own needs if it is worth the price at the end of the day. For me I feel it is. If you are someone that wants AI or other specific features then iRacing defintely isn't for you, but that could be said for any sim if you want very specific features. It is not the be all and end all sim the far right claim, nor is it the pos ponzi scheme the left makes it out to be. One thing is for sure, regardless of if you like it or not, it seems a number of people both within and outside of the service feel it is important enough to continually bring up, so it certainly remains on the radar be it good or bad, when other sims and games come and go...

Let's face it - it is 2nd to none as a pure simulator but the HUGE difference is the community aspect, forum and add a mix of real life drivers and it's a clear winner - what more could you want? Oh, and by the way, the Pro series, which is a feeder (top 50 qualify for iDWC) for next years inaugural iRacind Drivers World Championship (iDWC) is presently running. See Towler, Huttu, McLean, Purdy, etc going head to head is a bit of a treat to say the least! :) So what else is there that even comes close to stacking up to this? And I'm serious - been out of the loop for a while. Is there anything else even close? <Achilles in Troy mode on> "IS THERE NO ONE ELSE!" LOL

as titled by you and other iponzi investors?. not sure i have ever seen them in actual race cars performing at a similar level? so to others, they're good at iracing, nothing more, than say the worlds best mario brothers gamer? but i am sure it is entertaining, no more than other race sims recorded before i imagine.
And if i'm not mistaken the winner of iRacing's TDI Series gets a full boat free ride in the RL TDI Cup in the iRacing VW next year. That's not friggin bad!!! GR

the sim is shown and sold as the worlds most advanced based against reality, in fact clearly it's not. can't be in current state and is limitedly better than its predecessor which is 8 yrs older? pro series only means they are the best at exploit racing not best at racing because to be fast means bizarre unrealistic setups. when they race real life this was reflected in depressive result

Sim racing is a sport unto itself bozo! Pretty funny when the wanker thinks everyone else is the wanker!

Please tell me what series you race in so I can tune in to watch! I race RL amatuer (Porsche Club and NASA) and I wouldn't look down my nose at ANY form of professional car racing. GR

I'm no fan of this practice but "iPonzi" is simply an incorrect analogy anyway. Whatever anyone thinks, there is a post by a person (fellow Aussie in fact) being recently auto billed for 12 months sitting on the iRacing forums since Sept 29 culminating in the following today from Tim - "Right now we send emails to people who have auto renew enabled 2 weeks before their payment is due. We also email those who disabled auto renew to ask them to renew manually. Lastly, we also email those who did not renew to ask them back. Just recently got the capability to do this, but everyone should be aware now if they're not blocking our domains emails." In any case, some seemed to like things as it was - "Note to self...select 'autobill' and tell the wife...ooops...sorry about that...hehehe." :) In a month there will be private servers - how will they bash iRacing then?

Has iRacing always sent out these auto-renewal email notices? If so, then why the complaints, the "iracing ripoff" thread here, the jack b thread above, and now some Aussie guy? Then again, why have auto-renewal at all, especially for the yearly subscriptions? The players that like the game are going to renew anyway, and it's only going to create complaints from the players that didn't want to auto-renew.

No, this is no doubt a reaction to recent complaints. A refund was asked for but so far it looks like that wont happen.

Looking at that thread and doing a web search, it seems that a few states (USA) require (consumer law) these notices. Then again, being a consumer law, there's seldom any fine or other risk, since minor infractions tend to get ignored, other than the person usually may a refund, if that person lives in one of those few locations that even have such a law. Then again, maybe it was due to the thread here and the Jack B thread, and the negative publicity. Regardless of the reason, they're sending out notices now, so problem solved for any future auto-renewals. Would be nice if that guy got a refund though.

In North America there are so many leagues available at all different times league schedules are not restrictive. That may apply to Australia but not North America. Byron Forbes wrote:

it is worse than thought about deceit, http://www.business-litigation-associates.com/iRacing.pdf Here is transcript comments about actual truth under oath "The question that was asked of DK was very simple, "How much of the original NR2003 code remains in the iRacing software?" DK responded with, "I do not know exactly, but I estimate 65% is unaltered NR2003 code" Tim R's lawyer asked, "So why do you state as little as 1% to the media and on your own site?" DK responds with, "We tell the public and media a different number" Tim R's lawyer asked, "Why would you do that?" DK responds with, "We do not want our customers to know or they may not buy our product" http://www.thepits.us/board/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=15174&start=15 so looks like what they say on their site is one thing and truth another like over 15000 members probably is how many names they used from demos and such. money is evil
