Stoddard watched the F1 race last week; why race for position, when you can
do that ?
New rule next year I bet. Great, now The Winston is going to be boring
too.

Jeff Burton's last-lap pit trick at The Winston
John Pancoast criticised Jeff Burton's crew for taking the mandatory green-flag pit stop on the last lap of The Winston's first segment, keeping track position by exploiting the pit location. Others called it a smart use of a rule loophole and expected NASCAR to ban it next year. The thread drifted into Survivor and Everquest jokes.

Automated summary.
most anyone behind the s/f line could have thought of it too...I'll have to
tip my hat to them, cause i also believe that its always best to work smart,
rather than hard when the opportunity presents itself :)
I can't agree with you John. They found a rule flaw and used it to their
advantage, that's what competitive people do. The call WAS brilliant, was it
fair? Probably not, but that is for NASCAR to fix.

Just stinks IMO; it's not racing, anymore than the GP was.
Having a new rule against it next year(I imagine) says it all :)

In the first 40 lap segment, each car is required to make a green pitstop.
Burton was pitting just behind the s/f line. So, on the last lap, while
everyone else had pitted earlier, he pits..........goes fifty yards or so to
cross the s/f line/run the lap, and maintains his position, race over.
-John
I agree, it was almost a sure bet, so it kinda spoiled it. But i suppose
thats also a side-effect of what happens when you interupt racing with
mandatory this and that. Youre also right in the new rule thing. Im sure we
will see the mandatory "pit window" next year. Heeheeee !

Good point, that's true(mandatory stuff). Get rid of the pitstops<G>

And he ended up finishing 20th overall so what difference did it really

It's The Winston, not a points race and thus the reason for the weird and
wonderful rules. Sure it wasn't really fair but this race is for the fans
and thus they try and mix stuff up a bit.
I'm no Jeff Burton fan by far but it was a fair move under the rules, just
glad he didn't win :)

No kidding! Let's get back to talking about Star Wars!! ;)
No one got robbed. Jeff Burton was running in the Top 10 the whole time up
until they went with that strategy. Even if he would have pitted like
everyone else, he still would have been in the top 20. The same cars would
have gone home

So pit entry and exit are not considered part of the stop in Nascar?
Actually something similar happened in F1 when someone (hmm I think it was
MS but not sure) served a stop n go penalty on the last lap of the race,
having crossed the finish line before stopping because the team garage was
at the bottom of pit road...
I think the FIA patched that leak, so I'd guess NASCAR will do the same to
clarify what's involved in a pitstop?
cheers
