Was racing online yesterday, and got a little behind . when the leaders came
around to lap me, I was about in the middle of the track, they were coming
up fast. I figured I would just not move, would let them go around however
they wanted. (Was thinking that if I went hi/lo they would do the same and
hit me) Naturally, one of em smacked into me and led to a big mess.
Subsequently, I was told that I "sucked a**". This was confirmed by several
others. Said I should yield to the leaders. Now which way should I go to get
out of their way?
It depends on the track, etc., but generally, going high is a safe bet.
Having said that, sounds like they could have been a bit more patient too;
they sound like the "I've caught up to you, move over NOW" types.

lol that actually happened to me once as well.. I was without draft at
talladega and the pack of leaders were just coming up *real* fast, I had the
same concerns as you in that I didn't know if I were to go high that they
would be able to move in time, so i stayed kinda in the middle and ended up
causing a pretty big wreck.. luckily it was only a 10 lapper for fun..
but I wouldn't worry about it... since that incident i've always gone high
and it's never failed yet..

If you held your line I'd say it was their fault. It's their job to pass you
not for you to let them pass. Your only job is not to turn into them IMHO.
If I had been trying to pass you then I rammed you and you held a steady
line, I'd say it was my fault.
If you want to try and let them pass safely, I always try and stay high in a
turn if that's where they are gonna catch me, if they are likely to catch me
on the exit of a corner I'll try and stay low on the exit. Maybe I'm wrong,
but no one has rear ended me yet (except under yellows)
I'm not an expert in NASCAR sims by any means, but I do like to think I'm
reasonably safe ;)

I'd much rather have somebody I'm lapping hold his line than make some
erratic move to get out of my way. Your #1 job is to be consistent and
predictable. Their #1 job is to get around you safely.
Of course I'd never tell anybody he "sucked a**" either, because I generally
try to have a bit more class than that. Unfortunately, the only guaranteed
way to get away from jerks like that is to join a league or only race with
friends.
Thing was, they hit me towards the end of the straight at daytona. First two
got by ok ,third hit me. Guess he didn't see past the other two.

Possibly he has a low-spec PC and had to turn "cars ahead" way down. Still
no excuse to be rude to you though.

You didn't do anything wrong. It is best to hold a line and let the
overtaking drivers pick high or low and let them do their thing. The only
thing worse than catching a much slower car while in a line and at speed is
for that driver to make a sudden erratic movement. The only other thing you
may have been able to do is pick a line and autochat to the approaching
driver to 'pass low' or 'pass high' and hope they have enough awareness to
know that it is you telling them this...
If you held you line - it's **allways** the faster driver's responsibility
to make a safe pass.
As long as you dont drive like 'Swervin Irvan'... - it's their
responsibility not to screw things up.
End on story.

Their mistake, compounded by rudeness. In a Nascar race, too - go figure...
;-)

PS - it's a good idea to use the autochat keys to tell guys which way to go
in such situations and then make room for them in that direction. You might
also reserve a key for " I TOLD you to go high/low; can't you read?" Might
come in handy!

been doing GPL online for 1-2 years prior to my entrance to the N4
community. In GPL, most ppl keep quiet during race, or if the cause
accident, they type "sry", which are being responded by "np". Not so in N4.
In N4, some kind of accident would happen, and all hell would break loose.
Flaming all over the place. I once was flamed heavily for being rearended at
Daytona, in spite of me being in the lead pack and keeping my line. Go
figure.
For some mysterious reason, a few people seems to have a gas pedal that
cannot be lifted.
If you are being lapped, and you do not realize it until it is practically
too late: Keep your line. If they know that you will hold your line, they
can pass safely. If you change line when they are passing... well... close
your eyes, 'cause heavy flaming is about to happen.
As long as you are not blocking, and are behaving in a predictable way, I'd
say you are doing the right thing. If you, in spite of this, are being rear
ended, then I'd say that the rear ender is at fault.

I don't race online in anything but GPL, so have minimal multiplayer
oval experience, but as far as Daytona goes (and Milano, which includes
a "half-oval"), the single worst thing is when the car being lapped
makes an unexpected sudden movement. Of course (especially at Milano),
GPL cars break away quite easily on very banked corners, so that's just
bad luck, but as far as I'm concerned if the driver you're lapping
holds their line, and you still crash into them, it's your fault.
(Of course, you have to be *very* careful when lapping a group of more
than one car, as [in most cases] GPL drivers can only see one car in
their mirrors...)

When you see lead cars or packs approaching, pick your lane, usually the higher lane in turns, and
use your F keys to tell them where you want them to pass you. On another note, the leaders/lead
pack should also be using their F keys to signal where they intend to go. Looks like everyone takes
a little blame for that incident, but of course the faster guys never see it as any responsiblilty
of theirs to make safe passes

Yeah, I agree. It's kinda like driving when an emergency vehicle is coming
up behind you... if you can't get to the curb but there's room to the left
or right then just hold your line, they'll go around you.

Just hold your line at that place, and if you are able either stay low or
stay high. Leaders are quite able to pass you there without a problem,
yeah. It's not like there ain't enough space, they could go 2 wide passing
you even if you were staying in the middle. There is even dividing lines on
the track to facilitate that.

Generally speaking, go high and stay there.
It doesn't hurt to have a Macro recorded for "I am going high" and "I am
going low".

The very best answer is the one you chose, STRAIGHT AHEAD.
It is the responsibility of the overtaking car to pass safely, end of
story.
Granted, you probably should have been using shift-F2 to notice that
the leaders were closing long before it was too late to get to one
side of the track or the other.
So, no star next to your name, but no black mark either.
