New Dell PC lacks a gameport for an old wheel

Dan Belcher complained that his new Dell had no gameport for his Logitech wheel. Replies said gameports were legacy hardware poorly supported in Windows XP and recommended a USB wheel such as the Momo or a gameport-to-USB adapter, while others noted sound cards still usually provided gameports.

Well, I just bought a new $1,899.52 Dell PC to find out it doesn't have a freakin' gameport for my Logitech wheel! I gotta go out and buy a new wheel now AND find someone to buy my old wheel off me. Maybe my friend Corey will . . . ----------------------------------------- Dan Belcher Webmaster, http://www.gplworld.racesim.net/simcrash
If you're running Windows XP on the new toy, you're better off with a USB wheel anyway. XP doesn't fully support the game port controllers, since they're between four and seven years old and the controller manufacturers have moved their product primarily to USB. 8-) -- Chris H. Why hate Dell? Shouldn't you have checked it had a gameport in the first place? Doesn't sound like Dell's fault. (Can you tell I'm a network manager happy Dell's as server and WS's :) James "Chris H." <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:dUkH8.662$[email hidden]...

Reminds me of a silly workmate who recently bought an IBM with 3 years to pay. First thing he does is buy a half decent AGP video card to replace the one built into the motherboard. Brings it home to find the motherboard doesn't have an AGP slot :) Last I heard, it was up for sale. He'll lose a bundle, especially since it's a very average computer to start with, a low speed P3, and he'll still be making repayments for 3 years.
Dan, Chris is right. Gameports are soooo "legacy." IIWY, I'd go out and buy a wheel commensurate w. yer new CPU (like a Momo), but if you like, I'll give you a CH gameport if you'll pay the shipping. --Steve "Dan Belcher" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]... > Well, I just bought a new $1,899.52 Dell PC to find out it doesn't have a > freakin' gameport for my Logitech wheel! Even mb's with onboard sound usually come with a gameport.

You're right, Jonathan, and I've got an optometrist friend who dabbles in a lot of musical creations. He simply is staying with his trusty Windows 98 setup because most of the new computers on the market don't come with the proper (old) hardware setup. He's got too much invested in his equipment to change everything out, yet he doesn't really need anything else to continue his enjoyment and creating. If the user is satisfied with the current computer/operating system, and it does what he/she wants, there really isn't any need to spend money. Unfortunately, our society seems to think we've all just "got to have" the latest all the time. We really don't. -- Chris H. Old controllers never die. They just get put on the shelf where they collect dust because the low-life manufacturers and operating system developers use the gameport as a way to generate new revenue by taking away support for it. At least that's how I see it :) There is nothing technically difficult about supporting the damned game port. It's been done for 20 years now! -Larry "Chris H." <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:dUkH8.662$[email hidden]...

Check for a game port ? I haven't seen a computer in 15 years that didn't have a game port. That's like checking to be sure the keyboard had a backspace key. :) -Larry "news.unimelb.edu.au" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:ackm19$64e$[email hidden]...

Pretty much every souncard comes with a game port because it's the same as a midi port. Got an add on one with my Audigy Platinuim but I don't use it, USB is soo much better. Some Call Me Tim
Would a gameport to usb adapter work? They're available at radio shack and as a bonus they eliminate spiking. Only fools and horses buy from Dell boy <G> Oops. Only the Brits here will get that one...... The new soundblaster DOES have a gameport, thought it is not physically on the card. It is on its own slot ala old IDE cards with the I/O. -Stuart Becktell "Dale Green" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

Not the good ones :) The Inspirion (8100) that I have doesn't have one, not that bad, just had to replace my MS gamepad with the USB version. -Stuart BEcktell "Larry" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:XTtH8.69519$[email hidden]...
