I ran an online race with our DTM guys(Nascar heat mod) and I used an
Aussie V8 Supercar. It was like an F1 compared to the DTM slugs, top speed
was waaaay beyond what the DTM mod cars produced. What is the top speed a
real Aussie V8 gets on the straights of Bathurst? (I think we need to
either bump up the dtm's or tone down the Aussie-cars)
thanks

I'd expect to be seeing V8 supercars around 280kph - 300kph down Conrod.
Cheers,
Rod.

I believe that Glenn Seton broke 300kph in qualifying a few years ago down
conrod. I think they still do about the same top speed (but I missed
bathurst this so I'm not too sure). They'd easily hit 290kph

Ok a short comparison:
Aussie V8 Supercar 5.0L 620hp top speed approx 300+kph
Trans Am V8 5.1L 640Hp top speed 290kph
Winston Cup Stockcar: 5.8L 725HP top speed 323kph
2001 Dome Judd LeMans LMP 900 top trap speed 335kph.
Without knowing the in/outs of the hp generation in Nascar Heat, it would
'appear' as if the Aussie V8's are using a Nascar engine with a a much
lighter chassis. The speeds I got with a full tank in the Aussie car rivals
that of the fastest LeMans protoypes on the chicaned Musanne(although the
air restrictions on the LMP cars probably means the Aussie Supercars have
more HP)

Yeah, they can just hit 300kph at the end of Conrod straight if they
are really going well in qualifying, but in the race they're normally
arounf 270 or 280 kph.
On other tracks without such a long straight they usually reach around
230 to 260 kph or so.

Realisticly dave, they are getting for example at Eastern Creek which is a
fairly long straight away 250-260kmh. Because the bathurst straight is so
long and it has 2 downhill parts to it it has a really high top speed with
is about 290kmh... A bike sim, now thats what the sim racing world really
needs, and not an arcade race like GP500, a GPL for motorbikes! :)

GP500 was arcade? Blimey....seemed as tough as old nails to me!

The aussie v8s are not a nascar engine. The crummydores run a 4980cc (308cu
inch) chev small block, and the fords run a 4949cc(302cu inch) ford engine.
From what I understand, nascar engines are larger (about 358 cubic inches or
about 5800cc) and I vaguely remember them racing at bathurst one year and
getting higher tops speeds than the aussie cars (despite the fact that they
had the brake about a kilometre before them)
The aussie v8s weigh either 1300 or 1350kg (I can't remember which), and the
nascars weigh more like 1500kg.
I doubt that the Aussie v8s have much more power than the Le-Mans cars -
they are running 5L pushrod v8s, and there is only so much you can do with
1960s technology.

Agreed, the numbers I quoted were from real-world press sites that gave
either estimates or actual outputs...Thus the speed of the Aussie car is
probably slightly higher than the American Trans Am even tho the TA car has
more HP. I suspect the higher top end derives from the fact no Trans Am
track has a straight as long as Conrod so they have optimised downforce as
opposed to top speed.
What I meant by saying the Aussie car had a Nascar engine was.... that
IN the mod, the characterics of the speeds was such that the Aussie V8 is
way to fast. I was guessing the modmakers, rather than use actuall
horsepower figures, had used #'s that were very close to the original
outputs that MGI used for it's simulated Stock Cars.(hence my confusing
reference to Aussie cars using a Nascar motor.) I should have clarified
that I meant the simulated V8 Supercars modeled in the mod were overpowered.
I have emailed one of the modmakers, he said they had lots of problems
getting the cars to behave and I suspect they made these compromises to
acheive some degree of drivability.
As far as the 60's tech being overwhelmed by modern engines...make a V8
big enough and the tiny turbos will still be humbled. I remember some 10 or
15 years ago, a magazine compared a Turbocharged Imsa car against a boxy
Winston Cup car on an oval. The Cup car won. Who knows what a similar
comparison today would produce, but pushrod doesn't always =slower. :)
now back to my original thesis...I was hoping to convince the V8 modders
to alter their physics to more closely match the real-world output, but they
do not, it is their project and I won't go against their wishes.
on to other topics.

That 1960's technology can still pump out the fastest accelerating
passenger vehicle made by man so it can't be all that bad!
Cheers,
Rod.

I'm not knocking the V8 (I love it), just the fact that you can use the
thing with cams and so on (Mr. Holden, I'm talking to you here). I little
addition to my previous figures, I just remembered that the aussie v8s are
limited to 7500 rpm, which obviously limits their power, but I guess a high
revving v8 wouldn't have quite the same "thunder" that the current ones
have.

it away as soon as you leave the pits, you can go full lean angle on a bike
at any speed in a straight line without crashing. This is not true because
the gyroscopic forces of the wheel spinning etc makes the bike harder to
steer the faster you go. Also the fact that at full lean angle that you can
use more than 20% throttle is absolute crap too. I race Formula
Xtreme/Superbike in Aus and our bikes have 165-175hp at rear wheel at weigh
around 165-170kg, and attempting to do that even on my bike would be an
instant hi-side. A 2stroke 500 has 190hp and weighs less than 140kg. Add in
the power of the bikes feels drasticly under done. A 500 will lift the front
in 4th gear even if the rider is tucked in behind the screen. The bikes
handle worse than a standard street bike.... If on a real bike you were at
full lean angle and got as little steering as you do in GP500 you would
seriously be leaving your team. 100% lean angle is not used very often, only
on a few shorter corners or long radius corners and as i said before, if you
are travelling at the maximum cornering grip of the tyre just with corner
speed, you can hardly touch the throttle untill you pick the bike up onto
the fattest part of the tyre which is around 45degrees (such is why you
visibly see riders pick the bike up on exits of corners). I could go on
forever but if i was comparing it to a game with similar handling but with
cars (ive been playing racing sims since indy500 days), i would say need for
speed porsche unleashed or a bit less....
