Petition to rename The Two Towers film

Dave Henrie asked whether it was insensitive to dismiss a petition to rename The Two Towers film because of 9/11. Nearly everyone said the title came from the decades-old book and the petition was silly, and the thread drifted into politics and views on President Bush.

I recently came across a petition to rename the upcomming moving The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers to something less insensitive. When I read the petiion, the author made it sound like the producers etc had deliberately changed the name to garner publicity from the tragedy of the 9/11 destruction of the World Trade Towers. That notion is both false and absurd. While I am sympathetic to the pain and suffering resulting from 9/11, his basic premise was written with such a lack of facts that it appears malicious. He, the petition writer, is either acting through ignorance or attempting to mislead people from all over the world. I wrote him a fairly long email chiding him for distorting the motives and history of the books and films. Does the fact I am challenging the petition make me insensitive? Am I missing something? dave henrie
>Does the fact I am challenging the petition > make me insensitive? Am I missing something? > dave henrie > > Hell No! This is just another example of whets really wrong with this Country. This PC crap is such a joke. If "you" don't like something, make the choice that's right for "you" and move on. Something as pointless as a movie title or what camera view you use in your racing sim ( had to do it lol ) just doesn't matter when you look at the big picture of life. MadDAWG
Nope, you are not missing anything. That was the original name of the book, not tied in with the twin towers at all ... As an American I think this petition is a good thing... in fact I am going to start my own petition. Here in the states we use the phone number 911 to alert the local police and emergency workers to a tragic event, car accidents, robberies, a cat in a tree. Since the events of 911, I have not been able to bring myself to call that number, and have been robbed six times, and my have lost one cat. So.... I am starting a petition to change the phone number 911 to 912. Additionally I am starting another petition to remove the ninth and eleventh floors from all buildings, as again I cannot stand to see these numbers used so closely together... In fact...all calendars should be changed to remove the 9th and 11th day, especially if they fall in the same week... Porsche should recall all 911's and rename them to 912 or 910's it doesn't matter to me as I am not as willing to upset Germans as we all know how bad that could go... Clocks should be changed so that the combination of 9 and 11..... Of course this post is about as serious as one should take these assine petitions. As a New Yorker I appreciate the thought, but it is a bit over the top. We should do more to remember the day, and not try and stick our heads in the sand and erase all mentions of it, no matter how hard some my try to make a connection that just isn't there... Ignoring bad situations is what caused these attacks to happen in the first place. Thank You. I hope I don't come off as being overly callous either Dave but after watching a flag draped peice of the WTC being hauled away yesterday (by many many news choppers) I came to the conclusion NY is milking this for all it's worth. I mean really, it's a dam peice of bldg not a human being. Surely not worth the coverage it recieved. Well I wouldn't blame NY for the coverage that's more of a media thing. IMO the coverage was a god thing only because its pretty sad how many people have already "forgotten" about it already. All I hear now is crap like "it takes to long at the airports now" kinda shit and it really pisses me off. Maybe, just maybe that flag draped piece of a building might just serve as a refresher to some people as to the type of scum bags we are dealing with. MadDAWG
Just what does that have to do with Bush?????? He is a very good President and does agree with bt's comments. I am soo much happier with him in office than I have been with the Presidency since 1992. "Txl" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:3cf79529$0$242$[email hidden]...

The movie title was set years ago when they started filming the trilogy, and years before that when the books were written! Milhouse
No, of course it doesn't make you insensitive. Ever since the day of the WTC collapse, I knew people were going to overreact. Yes, it was a terrible tragedy, but actually a very small one compared to so many that have happened throughout history, and currently. 100,000 people (many women and children) drop dead on the ground every day in Africa due to starvation and disease. 10 children (3,500 a year) are shot to death in this country every day, but unless 10 are shot all at once in a school, nobody cares. The WTC was a spectacular tragedy, and people respond in a big and sometimes silly way to spectacular tragedies. Doesn't make any real sense but it's true. Also, I'm sorry to say but most Americans don't have a clue about history and what is going on in the rest of the world today , so to them this is the biggest thing ever. Complete ignorance is what I see coming out of people's mouths when they talk about the WTC collapse. Sounds like the same mob that petitioned Anthrax and their newly released album Spreading The Disease, claiming they were profiteering on the events of the time. The unfortunately overlooked the fact that the album was released in 1986. Cheers, Rod.

If more American knew history, they'd also know that the "War on Terror" is the second we've had since 1980. I don't want to jump to conclusions about Bush's motivations (it's not like his past, both private and public don't fucking say enough) but is interesting that one of his heroes, Ronald Reagan, turned our last terrorist crisis into a re-election campaign and didn't do a god damned thing about the problem, as it were. Kinda weird eh....in some ways he's "our" president as well and we have nothing to say in the mater :-), being the leader of the most powerful nation in the world both military and economically means that your strengths and weaknesses shows up pretty fast Glad it's not my job, I'd be almost as useless, I'd much rather be prime minister of Norway, that way I wouldn't make such a huge mess.....internationally :-) Beers and cheers (uncle) Goy "The Pits" http://www.theuspits.com/ "A man is only as old as the woman he feels" --Groucho Marx--
