RASCAR Pocono race and the no-yellows debate
EldredP announced a no-yellows RASCAR race at Pocono after previous races were dominated by cautions. Members split between those wanting yellows for realism and strategy and those willing to try, with suggestions such as no passing until the backstretch on restarts. John Simmons stressed it was a pickup race rather than a league, and EldredP voiced frustration at running it.
Automated summary.
Cool. That's what I started practicing today :)
What is the fixed setup based on? Is it an un-molested version of the Fast

I'm pretty sure no yellows is not a solution to the underlying problem.

Count me out then... 40% race and no yellows is not the thing for me.

I agree with Jan.... the flags isnt the problem - the driving is...
How about we adapt the "no passing until back-straight on restarts" rule ??
Lots of leagues use this rule and there has to be a good reason for it :-)

Cant say I agree with you there John....
Remember the guys who ran 120 laps (or so) green at Richmond and had N2002
throw them a yellow for 'debrise on track'...
That was the FastFood Racing League... here's a little clip from their
small but effective rule book:
"9. On a restart, you MUST hold your lane (either high or low) until the
back straight if a car is above or below you. Do not pass until the
backstraight. The only exception to this is if you know the car in front of
you to be damaged, and it is safe to switch lanes. Gents, we all know the
perils of re-starting, let's be careful out there, eh?"
This *is* effective aslong as everyone play by the same book.

I have to agree with Ed, I ran in the FFRL tonight, a 107 lap Chicagoland
race.
After two yellows early in the race we ran about 80 laps under green
straight through to the end of the race. No yellows were caused on the start
or either restart.
It didn't throw a yellow for debris, though I really could have done with it
;)

We'll agree to disagree :) I've just seen to many accidents caused by
people trying NOT to pass, stay in place, etc. in these type of rules.
That, and I hate trying, and requesting anyone to try, to remember a rule
not enforced by a sim :) Just one more thing to worry about.
We don't use it in my league, usually get around three yellows per 40%
race, including three at a 160 lapper at Richmond :)
But different strokes.

When you compare our Dover race to the typical online Dover race, we didn't
do all that bad...
If I had one thing to say, it's that we need to clean up our act during the
yellows themselves, especially when they come out.
No slamming on brakes (sheesh, please!)
Don't run up on the field at 837mph.

It is no easy task to setup for clean races especially with different
drivers showing each week.
My experience has shown it typically takes a month or more to get to a point
where you can get yellows even close to an acceptable level and that is with
running the same drivers each race. One tip is that you will never please
everyone so I'd suggest not even trying. Different drivers like different
settings, tracks, etc. If you plan on running open races like this I would
suggest 25-20% no yellows, otherwise it will be very long and boring running
under yellows the majority of the race. Another thing to try is single file
restarts, that will at least help keep cars apart after a yellow. A no pass
rule for the first lap or first half lap can be a big help in preventing the
green flag jumpers.
Pocono is a really hard track to run on for new drivers that haven't run
together before. The braking into the turns is difficult as people run in
at different speeds and tend to run each other over. It is a track that
requires a lot of practice and one slip and a car is into someone.
Having been through all this I can tell you it certainly gets frustrating
but I have yet to see a league where that was not the case. If you want to
be a success you need to stick it out for the long haul. Best of luck.

Someone causing a yellow will be
left behind. That might be incentive to drive a little smarter and cleaner.
BTW, the start at Dover and the first few restarts were pretty clean. It
looked like everyone was giving a little. It wasn't until frustration set in
that we started having some problems.

This isn't a league - it's merely a semi-restricted pickup race that
happens once a week. Because of that, everybody balks at the idea of
having rules of conduct, and there's no real incentive to always drive
clean because there's no points and no penalties.
Like it or not, that's the way it is.
I think no yellows would be okay under these circumstances. We don't yet
have any intentional wreckers that I know of, so wrecks will be either
one of them racing deals, warp-induced, or someone that hasn't
practiced.
I don't think Eldred is up for administrating a league, especially since
he's participating as a ddriver in at least one league himself. I know
first-hand what being admin is like, and it is not very much fun
sometimes.

I agree with what you said, that is why most pickup races don't use yellows.
I haven't run any RAS races first hand but from what I have read it seems to
be a pickup concept with league settings. Although it would be great if
this would work I personally don't see it being very successful. I don't
think there are many intentional wreckers around, the biggest issue will be
lack of practice and lack of knowing what other's drive like. Learning the
styles of other drivers can be as important as learning a track since the
racing is so close.

Eldred,
IMHO, removing the yellows will not help on the problem... It's not the
cations thats is the problem - its the drivers! It would be like removing
the medicine and let a disease find it's own cure; once it's killed all
there is to kill - it will just die out by lack of victims and be gone.
Now I did not particeipate in the first Pocono race, but AFAIK that was "a
long time ago". Things has improved, Imho, and as we start to visit tracks
for the second time and as the drivers start to know each other things will
only get better.. The last race at Dover we had 14 yellows... (and
atleast 4 of these could have been easily avoided if people just would
listen) - thats just a fraction over 1/3rd of the race... Now looking back
at other races the amount of caution laps have been closer to 50% or even
more. So things are improving. (And it certainly beat any other "pickup"
races you can find on Sierra!)
One should also realize that last time you raced at Pocono it was the first
RASCAR race for some drivers... it was also the first time the field was of
any real size..
I for one would not mind at all if we were to take RASCAR a bit further and
add some rules to it.. A small but effective rulebook can be made. If
man-power is needed here - I'll be glad to help out. I've managed leagues
before and also written rulebooks before.
It dosnt have to be super-serious - it only means that we all must play by
the same rules.

Well, it's not really a 'league'. It's more like a club of guys who races
every saturday. No rules, besides common sense rules.
The race Saturday was supposed to be single file restarts. Since I was late
starting it, I forgot to set it... The 'no-yellows' is an attempt to keep some
excitement in the race. Driving around under yellow is pretty boring...

I agree Ed. I think a few minor rules are in order. I would like to see a
"no passing till backstretch" and "no racing to yellow" are both a good
start. Perhaps a few rules will help the guys that only race Sierra
understand whats expected from them as drivers.

Thanks. I would never suggest something like that on a short track like
Martinsville or New Hampshire. There would just be TOO much traffic to risk
running full speed through all the crashes. We'll see how many people we get
Saturday...

Eldred,
I think it was a courageous and justified step of you to declare this one as
a 'no yellow' race, and I think everyone should give this a chance.
I perfectly understand the concern that driving without yellows takes away
from the strategy, but considering the intensely yellow colour the previous
Pocono race has had, you also have to ask where's there any strategy left at
all if by mid-race your tires are almost unused and the driver still feels
as fit as a fiddle because you've run under yellow all the time?
I think the wear and tear caused by a race consistently run at race speed
will emphasize the strategical aspect far more than what not using yellows
reduces it by.

The only advice I think makes sense is when you're in a pickle like this,
always err on the side of Realism. That way, you can always say that the
real Race Drivers have to live with it :)

If I want to run a 20% race, I'll just run on
an open server.
I have shown up at the last 2 of Eldred's races just BECAUSE they were 40%,
Yellow-enforced races.
I felt like I was in a real race, where taking care of the tires, staying
out of trouble, and good pit strategy all became an important part of the
event. You can't do that with short races with no yellows. Ya just can't.
Short/No yellow races are nothing more than long hotlap sessions. They
aren't races.

"trying NOT to pass" part. It seems like in the RASCAR races on
restarts it really seems like nobody goes. Instead of jumping on the
gas, I am pretty much half throttle in 1st or 2nd gear all the way to
the back stretch. I know everyone is trying to be cautious, myself
included, but it is almost worse since you end up with a huge traffic
jam and all it takes is one or two people to see an *opportunity* to
pass half the field and next thing you know we have another yellow.

I'll go ahead and cast
my vote to keep the yellows. The only thing I hate worse then driving
around under yellow is getting spun in the first 5 laps, and going
several laps down because there is now yellow. At that point you
might as well quite the race. With yellows off, you will probably end
up with 3 or 4 happy people (those not involved in any incidents) and
the rest will all be ticked off. I say keep the yellows and share the
misery :). Single file re-starts may be a good compromise. Of course
my vote probably shouldn't count this week since I will probably have
to miss the race.

Maybe allow it with less than 10 to go or if you are in the middle of
a pass when the yellow comes out. I believe this is what most leagues
implement.

Sounds Great john, since it allows us to use ANY points system, then may
I propose the DaveH points system...where everyone else gets dq'd and I get

2 things:
1. Have 2 race administrators who review replays and such after the
race if there are problems (i.e. if someone complains that they were
'taken out' or in general if the number of cautions is in double
digits).
2. Enforce some self-spin rules. OSCAR uses 2 self-spins/incidents
caused and you park it. I doubt NASCAR would be as forgiving.
3. I wouldn't advocate bans or anything, but send polite email
warnings to people who are clearly creating problems. I wouldn't want
to lose the friendliness of the events, but on the other hand you have
to have some guidelines to follow or there's no way caution-free
racing can happen. I consider myself a clean racer, but I think that
follows from racing in OSCAR where a careless, unintentional nudge can
generate fines.

Well, if we have 25 cars, and half of them spin once, that's double-digits.
>2. Enforce some self-spin rules. OSCAR uses 2 self-spins/incidents

The real NASCAR doesn't make people park it because they spin twice. At least,
I've never seen it. Usually the only time they pull someone off the track is
for definite rough driving(Harvick), or a car that's too beat up to keep a safe
pace. What's the ratio of yellow flags in OSCAR? I don't think I've ever seen
any of their race reports.
I agree about some guidelines, and I wonder how much that will change the
'feel' of the races. We may go to an 'invite' list, as someone suggested to me
- if you're not on the list, you can't race. The list would probably
originally come from John's RASCAR website, and we would add to it later. I
dunno how that would work out yet - I haven't made a decision on that.

Shaddup =)

True. Usually, in my experience, there are usually a handful of cars
that self-spin/repeatedly cause incidents and they usually end up
causing a lot more than 2 each. The thing with cautions is, normally,
you end up with maybe 2-4 out of 20 racers causing 14 cautions
themselves, and everyone else ends up wondering what the heck is going
on.
> The real NASCAR doesn't make people park it because they spin twice. At least,

My point was, if some rookie came up and couldn't control their car, I
doubt NASCAR (or the team for that matter) would allow them to
continue their racing career in their series. If Kevin Harvick spun 2
or 3 times by himself at Pocono, I'm sure that a.) he'd be getting
seriously laughed at and b.) NASCAR would, at some point, say "park
it" and then have a meeting in the trailer about his lack of car
control
> pace. What's the ratio of yellow flags in OSCAR? I don't think I've ever seen

The last practice race I was involved in, using open setups and (I
believe) 40-50% race lengths had 6 cautions, 4 of them in the first 10
laps, 2 of them specifically caused by me (one misunderstanding of a
rule, another I just completely mis-estimated braking distance...both
stupid mistakes, in other words, that I would normally be
fined/suspended for in a non-practice race). This was at Pocono.
With open setups. The entire field made at least 1 green flag
pitstop, the second last caution came when someone's motor blew with
about 15 laps to go, the last came on the final lap when someone did a
beautiful 360 coming out turn 3 trying to rush to the finish line
(i.e. we didn't actually pace, since it was on the last lap).

How about qualifying races? Have a couple 20% length races beforehand
to weed out reckless drivers and take the top 10 from each race (or
more, until you have a field of 20 or whatever you'd want) and seed
them into a 50% (or whatever length) race. You could set it up like a
typical sprint car event.
For instance. I enter qualifier 1. I finish 4th. Pow, I'm in the
50% race, and I can go drink a beer and wait 20-30 minutes for the
long race. Or, alternately, I enter qualifier 1, have some bad luck,
and finish 14th. I enter the second race and finish 3rd. I'm in.
Or, alternately, I lose control of my car in both races, finish 15th
each time, and miss the long race.
I'm just trying to think of a way to keep the long races fun with full
rules enabled and have entry based on merit instead of "hey, I'm
so-and-so from RAS" or "I'm Eldred's sugar daddy". =) People who
aren't quite up to making the feature race would be getting valuable
practice/seat time in the heat races, and people who are able to drive
a 50% race cleanly would, in all likelihood, be able to make it
through the qualifiers easily (I can't imagine having many more than
20 people turning up for the race anyway). This way everyone could
participate to some extent, and the people who were serious about
running long races with full rules could do that as well.
Just an idea.
Jason
Actully, the only way to REALLY fix the problem is to turn this thing
into an administered league with a spcific ruleset that everyone must
adhere to, along with an access-restricted server (through an invite
file). Like I stated earlier (and possibly in another thread), Eldred
isn't up for that (and I really can't blame him).

Do we really need *another* league? Aren't there enough out there for people
who want the organized competition? There are probably 10 or more different
leagues that run every day... Just guessing, but there have to be a COUPLE
every day.

else who tries to join gets banned.
From a purely selfish standpoint, I wouldn't be very happy, because I wouldn't
be able to make the cut. Out of the 10 races I've been in, I've finished in
the top 10 6 times. That might seem good, but 3 of the races had *less* than
10 drivers. My other 3 top 10's were only due to attrition - people getting
disco'd, disgusted because of too many yellow flags, etc.
I'll have to think about it a bit more... :(

The way to do it, IMO, is via an invite list. And you have the final say
on who is on it; if someone doesn't like that, race elsewhere, take it or
leave it. You decide if someone gets booted off it, etc. And make it
known, them's the rules, they're not up for discussion.
Keeps it simple, easy, etc.
It really shouldn't be as involved as this thread.

Sounds way to complicated to me....
If we want to keep this 'causal' we need to make it simple or else we might
just turn the whole thing into a league.
Invite list *could* be a solution - but I for one would rather see the
current format being retained - i.e one 'commonly known' password.

True, but "open" racing only works if everyone co-operates........which is
a pretty unrealistic expectation :) All someone needs to do, is ask to be
on an invite list. Then, they race and go from there.
Actually trying to make it _easier_ for him. Doesn't sound like it is
now.
Agreed about ras, but if someone wants to make an ass of themselves about
it, I think most here would side with Eldred. Know I certainly would.
Anyway, probably wouldn't work. But the more complex it gets, the quicker
there won't be any ras races I bet.

Well, there are many league admins who post here. Everyone here doesn't have
the password or 'invite' on their servers, and there aren't any problems.
After all, any serverdude has the right to allow who he wants, WHEN he wants.
I'm all for imposing a few rules, as per Jason's suggestion. There should be
some sanctions for people who *continually* cause incidents.

Agreed, Eldred. I should be possible to run a clean race or two

about RAS here.... sorry! ;->
Let's keep it the way it is and try without yellows in Pocono.

Hi John,
apart from the fact that your suggestion counterfeits the original idea of
an open race for everyone on RAS, you're putting quite a bit of pressure on
Eldred. As a league admin you know that those not on the invite list might
not always be easy about it, and since there's no way from keeping them off

Hey Larry!
Just wanted to ask you if you could consider to switch one of the availibe
RASCAR carnumbers - and then upload your car so the rest of us can download
it...
On my PC you just drive around in a blue car with #8 on it.. and according
to our rooster - #8 has been taken.
See http://www.paddedwall.org/rascar for availibe numbers..
Would be so nice to see your real car online :-)
(+ you might want to d/l the carset yourself! :-)
Best regards,

I don't think that an 'invite' list would be clamping down too much. That will

You mean it's not showing up as the red #8? I always thought it did :)
What numbers are available. I can change, no problem.
This is an area of NR I don't really follow or understand.

None whatsoever, however the relationship between running open races, as
in pickup races, and LPI are significant :-)

You can't use the #8 unless you're really a guy named Travis Lind
(that's who has the number reserved).
Like Ed said, go to the roster page here:
http://www.paddedwall.org/rascar
and find a car number that's not already in use, and let me know here.

You can run to the bathroom if your car is sitting in the pits. I've
had to do that very thing before (dinner from the previous evening was
being violently rejected by pre-existing tissue). I went 15 laps down
at Taladega because of that "pit stop".

In the Busch Bristol race there was one rookie that spun or was
involved in about 5 incidents that brought out the yellow and he was
allowed to continue. In fact DW was commenting on the fact that it
was time for him to park it and it kinda became the running joke of
the day every time the yellow waved and he was involved in it some
how.
I hate driving around under yellow but then I see something like the
spring Busch Bristol race and realize that we are not that far off
from the real thing. We are just closer to the Bush series or ARCA
then the Winston Cup series.

The only problem is that the user name people are using for the RASCAR
races may be the only time they use it. In other words they might not
have built up there LPI. I use zuguzg1 for everything but have been
considering making a new user name for the RASCAR races so people
would better know who I am. If I did that my first RASCAR race I
would have an LPI of 0 even though my other ID has an LPI of 60.

I got caught in *3* saturday, and I was trying VERY hard to avoid them. The
only reason it wasn't more was that I actually STOPPED on the track to avoid 2
more. Since I was already in last place, I didn't have to worry about getting

No, Mosport hasn't been done yet. Monaco isn't going to happen - we'd never

Actually, we are :) Which isn't a bad thing necessarily. Don't judge
much racing by the Busch races this year; that series is in the worst shape,
perhaps ever, this year.
Has weekly field-fillers each race, and the guy you mention above was one
of them. The Busch races are a lot worse than "normal" this year(probably
will be for awhile too).

Since my league car (the #23) is taken and I don't feel like
repainting it, I'll just use the default Harvick car if that's ok.

You know, that would be pretty cool. We could really kill ourselves
and do the 600 at Lowes. Come to think of it, after playing N4 and
N2002 almost constantly since their release I have never run a race
that is more than 50% in length.

True, but the CTS has always been like that pretty much, whereas the Busch

And it was a BRISTOL race with yellows :)
After the first 100 laps or so, and after all the non-racers were weeded out
and sent home, it actually wasn't bad at all. In fact, it was a damned fine
race.

I spent 11 years in the Navy. The first cruise I ever went on was a 7
monther in the Indian Ocean (during the hostage crisis). Since my
particular rating wasn't a high priority over there, it was seen as a good
time to 'spiffy' up our equipment spaces.
I swear I laid 100 gallons of paint on that cruise, in 120 deg or hotter
heat.
I vowed from that day that if anyone ever MADE me paint something, I would
purposely do it so bad that they would regret it for the rest of their lives
:)
In later years, after I made Chief, I always took volunteer's. There were
plenty who liked to do it. I never forced anyone to pick up a paint brush.
And THAT is how much I hate, and how bad I am, at painting.

When you run in open races, you end up racing with a wide variety of skills
and 'personalities'. It's hard enough to finish a race without an incident
much less win one.

Just make a new player/driver with your name, the correct number and the
Harvick paintjob and upload it to the forum and everything should be
a-okay - afaik. :-)

Larry,
Allow me to help;
On the left side of John's RASCAR-page( www.paddedwall.org/rascar/ ) you'll
see a bunch of numbers listed.. (0-9, 10-19 etc)
Those links contain the currect cars/roster.. (click 'em and you'll soon see
which number's are taken and which ain't)
To give you a quick rundown... here are some of the free numbers:
01 to 04, 06 to 09 (please not that this is '08' and not '8'), 24, 26, 30,
32,34, 36 to 38, 40 to 42, 44, 46 to 48, 51, 52, 57, 58, 60, 62 to 65, 72,
73, 78, 79, 81 to 85, 92, 94, 95, 97 and 98.
For availible numbers between 100 and 299 - see
http://www.paddedwall.org/rascar/100_199.html
My suggestion is that you find a number you like and talk to John about
it... I'm pretty sure he can paint a car for you and tell you how to use
it. And if he for some reason cant - I can.
No worries - it's not very complicated :-)

I need your sierra ID and country.
If you're going to use Kevin Harvic's car, you need to copy that car
file to something like 29_j_moyer.cup.car, and then go intoopponent
manager and put your own name in the car file (don't forget to select
the new file as your online car).
I don't want to see "Kevin Harvic" on the grid on Saturday. Otherwise,
you'll get an earful.

I wasn't in the last couple of races, but if I had been, you would jave
had a complaint. In fact, you may have been in the last race I was in,
and I recall someone asking if the #8 wasn't already taken. But beyond
all that...
You have plenty of time to resolve it. Just pick a different car number
and upload a car when you have the time. If you want a car number with
an "8" in it, the following car numbers are available:
08
38
48 (you could use the Lowes car that came with the game in the meantime)
58
78
98
See? That was easy.
Next, if you're not going to use #48, you'll have to do a minimal
paintjob for yourself until you come up with something appropriate.
All you need to do is create a new car file and plaster your selected
car number on it. Don't worry about uploading it (until your official
paintjob is done) because the game will compensate for everyone else.

I'll make it easy for you - check the roster to see if the deesired car
number is in use. If you see the yellow text "Available" on a green
rectangle, you can use that car number.
> I went to the web pages, but can't figure out what I'm supposed to do.
I thought I had spelled it out quite clearly. What part don't you
understand?
> I can't find a specific listing of car numbers and who has them.
It's right there in plain sight. On the left pane, you'll see the word
"Roster". To find out what you have to do, click that word. Once you
read that, click the number pairs under the word "Roster". that cover
the range of numbers that includes the number you think you want to use.
For instance, if you think you'd like to use the number "8", click the
number pair "0-9". The pane on the right side will change to show pics
of all the cars currently in use for that number range (0 through 9).
Well lookie there, someone already has the number "8" reserved. How can
you tell? Because there is either a paintjob shown (with someone's name
above it) or there's a white rectangle with a hand-drawn cartoon car
indicating that no paintjob has been submitted yet.
It's not that freakin hard.
The next easiest thing I can do is just assign the damn car numbers, and
I really don't feel like doing that.

Chill out. You don't have to be so condescending about this.
I explained that this is something I've never done before. You need to have
more patience with people.
Read the new thread I've started. I'll take the #98. I'll start working on
the car. I'll use the #48 and standard car until I have time to sort this
out.
Once I have the car done, I'll ask someone if I can't figure out what to do
with it.

Come on, John - you can ease up a *bit* now. It's just a game, after all. No
need to keep berating people. Please don't take this as meaning that we don't
appreciate you keeping the roster/cars, etc. But you tend to be "over the

I've done a high 1.18, but usually I'm at 1.19 high
Probably I just need to do a lot of laps there, but the damn car just
doesn't seem built for it ;-)
If you run decent laps, could you please post a replay?

Yeah, I do. Besides, I'm not being condescending. I am stating the
facts as I see them.

I always assume people have enough knowledge about a subject before
jumping into it. If you needed help with a car, all you had to do was
ask (as has been pointed out by others). I have several paintjobs ready
for use (including a #98).

No, I don't. I'm old. I'm angry. I'm set in my ways. I refuse to
change to fit other people's unreasonable ideas about who and what I
should be. I'm from the old school. Learn it. Live it. As soon as

attitude. One thing I can guarantee you is that you'll never have to
guess how I feel about something.

I did, and I've made a suggestion (but you'll have to read that thread,
too).

It should show the sierra ID in the standings, but I'll change the
name in the copied car file anyway. I'll use 29_j_moyer.cup.car since
you suggested that.

Anyway, I still want to do a low 1.17 or a high 1.16 in order to achieve a
decent N2002 rank ;-)
My idea was that I should do good enough times on the tracks I've driven, so
that when I have driven all tracks my first rank would be negative.
It seems much easier to get a negative rank in N2002 than GPL (where I'm 170
lol).

I just think that going full speed 2 rows, 4 to 6 cars, lap after lap is
such a rush it's hard to describe.
One cannot really compare it to some other kind of racing since it's simply
not possible to run so close in another type of race.
I ran a race in a (what felt like) completely flat oval. It probably wasn't,
but it was very hard to the tires, and was a lot of fun.
Probably I have much left to discover in Nascar. I'm looking forward to it
:-)
