RASCAR Pocono practice lap times and technique

Larry invited drivers to compare Pocono practice times with the fixed fast setup before a RASCAR race. Others shared target times in the 55-second range, braking points, gear choices and replays, while John Simmons said drivers who disliked the fixed setup could sit out.

Since this is one of the tougher tracks for a lot of people (myself included) :), I thought it might be useful to compare practice lap times so we know where we all stand in preparation for Saturday. Since it's a fixed setup, I don't see any secrets being won out of this :) I'll start. I know these ain' that hot, but it's me right now :) Every now and then, if I hit turn 3 right, I can get mid-160's. My average laps are 159.8 to 160. Those are my most consistent laps right now. Where does that fit in with everyone else? BTW... The fast setup for this track needs serious work. There is too much camber in the right front, and it can cause the right front to lock up braking into turn 3 because it's so flat. If you do that, you're screwed for that lap and may even have to come to a crawl to keep from hitting the turn 4 wall. Anything more than 1/2 braking will light it up. Don't brake late here! Also, I personally feel that it needs the trackbar raised about 1/2" on the right side for turn exits. And, the fast setup doesn't use tape effectively. There's not enough of it. Engine runs too cool. The good thing about this setup is that it is fairly stable. If the markers were bigger and easier to see, I think I could do a LOT better. -Larry

Adapt to the setup, instead of vice versa, and you'll have more fun :) If by T3, you mean the last turn before the straight, you can stomp all you want on the brakes there.........if you do it at the right time, fwiw. Your times aren't bad. -John > >

That's why I'm practicing, to adapt :) I sure can't stomp the pedal. The camber in the RF induces a lockup due to the reduced tire patch. Or so I figure... -Larry "John Pancoast" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

Where are you braking ? If not using it, try the last sign on your right, as you approach the turn. If you're talking about the tunnel turn,(t2, or t3-4, depending how you look at Pocono), you shouldn't brake at all there, just let off slightly. -John "Larry" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:6RgL8.2913$[email hidden]... > That's why I'm practicing, to adapt :) > > I sure can't stomp the pedal. Larry, you can use a calculator we have on one of our Oscar sites. It will convert time or speed. I also was having trouble getting much over 161.1's so I watched replays of a practice race we had 2night of the fastest guys on a fixed practice server. They start braking at the 2nd marker in turns 1 & 3 & 5. For turns 1 & 3 stay along the wall and brake lightly to about to the next marker then let off the brakes and drop the car into the banking, working it down by the apex then back on the gas at the apex. In turn 5 brake harder at the marker and try to keep the car in the dark pavement letting off the brake just before you turn and coast to the apex then get back on the gas. After about 15 laps of trying this I was able to get low 162's and in qual setup 162.396 or 55.42 seconds which would have been enough to put me on the pole for the race I practiced with and reviewed. Here is the calculator link: http://www.mdube.com/stock2.html FatnSlo "Larry" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:PPgL8.2912$[email hidden]...

I forget if RASCAR uses random weather or not, but. At 70 degrees no wind I'd aim for 54.9-55.1 range. 55.5's and faster should be competitive, but the front runners will likely be pulling 55.0's until the tires turn yellow, in my experience. When building my own setup for Pocono, I've found that the only real changes it needed were dropping the spoiler to 45 degrees (takes care of the uber-tightness and gives you several extra mph at all 3 braking points) As far as braking points go, I can run around 50 flat simply braking at the #2 brake markers at each turn and coasting to the apex once the groove darkens. My acceleration points are - turn 1, sometime after i can see the pocono sign but before i reach it - turn 2, between the read 'nascar racing' logo on the wall and the rainbow 'NASCAR' logo - turn 3, either the red sign (second to last) or the very last sign. Coming out of turn 3 is the most likely place to lose control of the car, so make sure you're counter steering a bit on the exit. The 'hammer the gas' points tend to very for me depending on how well I hit the line. If you hit it just perfectly you can get on the gas much earlier than you expect, if you're a tiny bit low or a tiny bit high you need to hold off in both turns (unlike most ovals where you can usually get on the gas really early if you miss the entrance on the low side). I generally use the same braking/throttle points regardless of the weather there. My fastest laps at 40 degrees are 54.6-8 using the fixed setup and at 70 degrees somewhere in the 54.9-55.1 range. I don't know what the temp/wind is like using realistic weather, but I'd still aim for low 50's at the worst. Jason

What is a good setup for one person is a crappy one for someone else. IMHO, if a given driver isn't comfortable with the setup, he can always sit the race out. Correct me if I'm wrong, but N2002 rank grab the player records at each track right? Well in that case it's not going to give a very accurate picture of how fast people are. RASCAR use fixed 'fast' setup from Papy - and we all know that those setups have never been very fast. Anyone who's ever downloaded to someother setups from the net is likely to have better records than what achiveable with the 'fast' setups. Thus the ranking can be giving a *very* false reading. -- ed_ "Uwe Schuerkamp" said: > that's exactly the question that N2002Rank is meant to answer > (shameless plug ;-), that's why I asked RASCAR drivers to > please register with N2002Rank a couple of days ago.

Yep, because you're a lot faster in the race because of drafting. the manual states that you should try to get some laps under your belt before you start tweaking with the setups, and N2002rank is really not a hotlapping site because your fastest laps will usually be driven under race conditions, with a fast driver slightly ahead of you, pulling you around the track. I know it happened to me last night at Talladega ;-) So talking of "hotlapping" in N2002 is a bit strange, I think. On the other hand, the superspeedways are drafting tracks. There is no way you can qualify as fast as when you draft. On all other tracks, you will be faster in qualify, since you can use 100% grille tape, and the draft isn't really needed because of the lower top speed combined with an unrestricted engine. I did a 55.3 just now after about 15 minutes of practice with the stock fast setup. Haven't been there since the last Pocono RASCAR race. I'd guess someone could do a flat 55 with this setup. Like I said before, everyone should check out the RASCAR site and look at the times that were done there in the last race to get an idea of what is competitive. If someone wants the replay of the lap just e-mail me at [email hidden] These cars really handle like boats unless on a track with high banking and wide turns. 8-( David G Fisher "Larry" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:P6vL8.3799$[email hidden]...

Read his last lind again, Larry...<g> He's still more than a second faster than me with the SAME setup. His "low 50's" with his own setup probably means a 53 or so... Yeah, sometimes I can type. =) I meant to say that low 55's are a good range to shoot for at 70 degrees no wind. Really, I think any time below 56 will keep you competitive and on the lead lap. As far as the pole, assuming we're using the fast setup for qual instead of the qualifying setup, I would expect something around 55.4-5. I can pull 54.9/55.0 after 3-4 laps when the tires are properly heated, but the fast setup is tigher than a [sexual metaphor deleted] after a [sexual metaphor deleted] until the tires warm up. I think my first timed lap using the fast setup is generally in the 55.8-56.0 range and the second anywhere from 55.1 to 55.5 depending on how well I hit the line. And, honestly, I'm not a very good sim racer, so I'd assume someone will best those times. Jason "Larry" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:<P6vL8.3799$[email hidden]>...

My advice (and this is true at almost any track, I'm guessing papyrus did this on purpose) is to start braking when the groove starts to darken (at Pocono, this is always at the 2nd brake marker) and ease off the brake until you're completely off when the darker groove which marks the beginning of the turn starts. Another good tip, is to just load up the driving lessons and jump straight to the third section (i.e. the full-speed lap). Look for reference points for brake/gas. Most of the time when you see the guy in the driving lesson ease on the gas, you can actually hammer it by that point. For instance, at Pocono in turn 2 (the tunnel turn) the guy doesn't really get on the gas until the multi-colored "NASCAR" sign, but with good warm tires and a perfectly positioned car you can usually literally go from 0 to 100% throttle well before that, even at the red "NASCAR RACING" sign. As a side note, since Pocono is my home/favorite track, I wish Papyrus would model the bump in turn 2. In real life it's incredibly easy to lose the back end midway through the turn (which is why everyone says it's so treacherous) because of the bump where the tunnel is. They've done a good job modelling bumps at other tracks (like the dip at the wall out of 4 at Daytona and the tank-slappers low in turn 1 at Atlanta and Charlotte) so I'm hoping N2003 gets it right. Or maybe it's there and I'm too busy concentrating on my throttle point to notice? Jason "Larry" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:<j%uL8.3794$[email hidden]>...

The one I offered him farther up in the thread is much, much faster. A whole 10/1000 of a second faster. Your slowness is going to cause wrecks on Saturday. :-) I screwed up a bit too so that's why I said that it should be possible to do a 55.0 lap with the fast setup. Well, if the training says the same then it works. On the FB, Pro Oscar stock division server tonight I q'd 3rd with a161.990 (Pole was 163.251 with 19 drivers), I led the last 33 laps and won under yellow. My fastest race lap was 163.032 which is my best ever. Key to winning though was getting out my calculator during yellows and figuring out what the average gallon usage was and pitting early enough (70 lap race). I pitted earlier than most leaders and my calculations were so close that I was able to win with about 1 gallon to go. Risky doing that though because later in the race there can be more green flag racing due to people who have quit or been dumped and it can change the average LPG under green/yellow. Watching replays of the race I think many people try to use less brakes in 1 & 2 (meaning 3 turn track) than I do which is faster, but riskier. Getting 163.9's at 70 deg would require doing this I think but I am not good enough to even try and I would surely spin it trying to do it during a race so my hat's off to the guys who can do it consistently. Checking this months rankings in Oscar/Flashpoint the fastest Q I saw for Pocono was 164.990 or 54.54. Makes me wonder how ridiculous the worlds fastest q is for this track with fixed setup. Unless of course you are racing on one of Papy's open servers in which case you can apparently stay on the throttle 100% all the way through the turn even if you are 3 wide. Actually I have a pretty good rythm for turn 3, there is a red part of the wall right before the markers. As soon as I pass that I count 1, 2 then brake. By the way if you are going to pass someone here on the inside, be prepaired to get on the brakes hard, it does'nt take much to drift up into someone in the corner. Besides the guy on the outside will either let you go or will over drive the turn if he trys to stay with you through the turn. Brian Oster Remove NOSPAM from my email to reply.

Not at Pocono. Drafting is big at Pocono. In real life Qual speeds are a lot faster than race speeds because the Cup guys have a lot more tweaks/know how when setting up a car for qualifying than we have in N2002. Even though there is a one engine rule I believe teams are still tuning the engine differently for qualifying and for the race so they still get a little more HP for a qual run. In N2002 are qual setups are not going to be so dramtically faster than our race setups, so drafting is even a bigger part of lap times in N2002. A lot of times I can turn a faster race lap after tires have heated up and I am behind someone during a race than I can ever turn in Qualifying. Brian Oster Remove NOSPAM from my email to reply.

I had a pickup race with open setups at Pocono the other day and this one guy was turning 54.0 lap times during practice. He was a full second ahead of the second place car. I don't know if he was running a qual setup AND drafting or what but it was pretty un-real. A discussion took place and it was suggested that he sell his setup on ebay. He declined but did say it would probably be pretty hard for most people to drive since it had a roll couple around 65. Brian Oster Remove NOSPAM from my email to reply.
The one good thing about using the FAST setup is that everyone should pretty much be able to drive them since they tend to be on the very tight side. Brian Oster On Wed, 05 Jun 2002 10:14:24 GMT, John Simmons <[email hidden]> wrote:

Yes, you are right. I did some more practice against the AI at 104% and managed to run below 55 using <fast> setup. Seeing how close Jason was to the inner side of the corners really helped. I've just run 15 laps at Pocono in a testing session using the default fast setup. Best time was a 55.325. I'd hope with a draft I could get a low 55 or maybe edge into a high 54. -- Ian P <email invalid due to spam> "Carl Ribbegaardh" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:adoj2h$127t6$[email hidden]... > Yes, you are right. > I did some more practice against the AI at 104% and managed to run below 55 > using <fast> setup. I just did a 55.243 on lap 4 <ahem> :-) with the fast setup. I have a question for you guys. Do most of you drop down to 3rd gear in all/some of the turns? I noticed in Jason and Carl's replays that they did. I stay in 4th the whole lap. Dropping down to third seems like it could only gain you an eventual mistake or even a blown engine. I drop to third entering T1, stay in it until after exiting T3; shift to fourth on the frontstretch. I shift to 4th a little ways after the S/F line and then drop back to 3rd in T1 and usually stay there for the rest of the lap. Depending on the setup, I might shift to 4th between T1 and T2 and then back to 3rd in T2, but the fast setup has the gear ratios so close this is not necessary. BTW, I ran a Papy Open race the other night. It was a fixed setup race and 3rd and 4th gear were really seperated by a lot. I don't think most of the other people there knew you were supposed to shift at Pocono. I was able to run down the Leader after starting in last place AND slowing to avoid all the lap 1 wrecks. When I got to him I was easily able to pass him off T3... I think he was in 4th the whole way around the track and it killed him Brian Oster. I can understand why someone would shift with a different setup, but with this default fast setup it doesn't improve lap times. David G Fisher "Brian Oster" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

Derek Wood on Flashpoint has done a 166.41mph or 54.08 q time. I have no idea if it is open or fixed, but wow! Sure wonder what the NR2002 q lap record is for this track. Steve Adams "Larry" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:ecWL8.14319$[email hidden]...
