during qualifying and races..
mini pause like stutter every now and then???
Anybody else experience that??
I have tried turning off replies but no good.
Is it the telemetry maybe??
F1 2002 stuttering and modem versus broadband
Ian Dickson asked about periodic stutters in F1 2002. Suggestions included texture memory limits, sound cards and frame-rate syncing with the monitor refresh. The thread then turned into an argument over whether 56k modems are adequate for online racing.
Automated summary.
Stuttering in games is usually due to graphics. If you are using high res
32bit textures and have insufficient video memory then it happens when the
textures have to re-load into the card's memory across the agp bus. Try
using 16bit textures or get card with more mem. My new GeForce 4400ti has
128meg so no more stuttering in games but ven on that it stutters on the
amazing looking codecreature nvidia demo which uses an awsome amount of
memory (something like 256meg!).
Some Call Me Tim
Thanks for that Tim
I have a Geforce 3 running 16bit colour (64meg ddr)
512 Meg ram
XP 1500+
I have tried 29.42 (immediate lockup)
29.40 (immediate lockup)
28.32 (blue screen dump)
23.11 and 23.12 run but give stutter (2 or 3 times a lap)
22.50 (old favorites of mine) same as above
Any suggestions chaps?

Usually turning down the texture detail and/or lowering the res will help.

Nope...runs perfectly here on a 512K cable connection. Seriously though,
why didn't you read a review of the game before you went and bought it
instead of coming on here and bitching about the crappy net code...? I
guess you'll know next time. I suggest that if you don't have access to a
fast network, you should just enjoy the game for what it is - an awesome
hotlapping game. Go register at EAs web site...

You shoyuld also have read the back of the box (how many of you actaually do
that?)
It clearly says Multiplayer 56Kbps 2 players!
Multiplayer ISDN,Broadband,Lan, 2-8 players!
Check Ya Specs before ya buy.
Besides a lot of you wingers will just have to wake up and accept that your
old 56k modem just won't cut the mustard anymore.

There is no reason a good 56K hardware modem can't play MP games as well, or
close to, as DSL. When they say two player 56k they are also talking about
cable/DSL users.
I've had DSL and it doesn't do MP any better than my 56k does, so long as
you are not hosting and find a server with low pings.

FU. Latency can actually be worse on DSL. Only a small amount of data has to
be transferred for a MP game, not the whole friggin game's graphics.

I have, but I prefer Ghost Recon, Delta Force: LW and online masive MP
flight sims. My game has never suffered because I am on a 56k modem, that
applies to N2002 also. There is another thread in this group where it is
pointed out that even a 28.8k modem is sufficient for online gaming. The
only problem with a slower connection is the long downloads to get new maps
for games like Q3A.

As I said before, FU, it is you who doesn't know WTF he is talking about.
For most games 56k is fine so long as you have a good ping. It is your ISP's
backbone that is more important than the speed of your connection. I've been
doing MP since 1993 - mostly ON A MODEM!!!

The best ping that I've ever seen on a modem was about 150ms - totally
appalling compared to 40ms or so for cable in FPS games like CS. 150ms is
probably OK though for racing games.
Cable certainly helps in shooter games due to ping rate, but saying that ive
seen plenty of CS/UT games online where servers are well and truely owned by
someone on a 56k with a 300ping...
In shooters theres nothing that makes up for raw talent not even a 30ping,
certainly helps lamers appear better then they are, of course when a
non-lamer appears on a 30ping its certainly goodnight!

Anything below 300ms is adequate! And that ping can really fluctuate so just
because it says 40ms when you connect doesn't mean it will stay there. When
I had DSL quite often I would get lag due to fluctuations, more so than on
my 56k modem.

More friendly than a cable system. Then more users on a cable system the
worse the performance will get, that doesn't happen with a modem.
> He's a dork.
Anyone who thinks 56k modem isn't adequate for MP gaming is an idiot. They
were doing this stuff long before your mommy and daddy let you roam free on
the internet.

And he's right about the DSL/Cable lag due to fluctuations too.
I'm on cable, but when I have GPL league races I connect with my 56k6
modem instead, which I even set on 28k8 for a more stable connection.

If the fps exceed the monitors refresh rate, I got stutter (seems to be a
syncronizing problem).
So, also try to push up the details to arttifically lower the fps.

It is projected that by 2004 55% of people on the internet will still be
using 56K modems.
And you are saying that one must have cable or DSL to play MP.
Hehe....clueless is you.

Define 'must.' For a large group to effectively play the current ISI F1
sims...you MUST have broadband. For GPL or N2002 this is NOT a 'must.'
There term 'Low Ping Boys' didn't just get made up as an excuse....EVERY
FPS allows 56kers to play, but they are at a disadvantage to
broadbanders...doesn't mean they still won't do well, but they are playing
with a handicap...just like when Doom came out and the 486 guys creamed the

So lets say.....for BEST RESULTS on most racing simulations...Broadband
is a distinct advantage.
