John, as promised here are some useful links for Broadband & cable modem
info:
==================
The first one is a good general cable modem/speed patch site with loads
of info and links. Go to....
http://www.speedguide.net/Cable_modems/cable_patches.shtml
===================
This next one is mostly specifically for NTL/Blueyonder cable users, but
it also has a lot of info which is useful for anyone using Broadband,
especially the IP address stuff, DHCP server stuff, web proxy stuff, etc.
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/robin.d.h.walker/cmtips/index.html
====================
This is also from the above site, but specifically covers USB problems.
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/robin.d.h.walker/cmtips/usb.html#usb
====================
General cable modem site:
http://www.cable-modems.co.uk/phpWebLog/stories.php
====================
This is the Firewall (its Freeware for personal use) which I currently
use and it is v.easy to use/set-up and is highly recommended on the net.
Other free firewalls include ZoneAlarm (also Freeware).

====================
More general cable modem & broadband stuff:
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/robin.d.h.walker/
====================
This site tests the speed of your connection to the net:
http://promos.mcafee.com/speedometer/test_0150.asp
====================
Another site which tests the speed of your connection:
http://www.vantage.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/v2/v2.htm
====================
Mcafee website (for anti virus and firewall software and info):
http://www.mcafee.com/
====================
The famous "Shields Up!" website. This site will test your pc's
security, its worth paying a visit here after you have installed your
firewall to see if it is working properly.

But, don't believe everything this guy says, he is a bit of a
scaremonger and not all the info on his site is 100% accurate.
====================
This site explains all the terms used by firewalls and explains lots of
firewall stuff (this gets a bit hardcore techie here though!)
http://www.robertgraham.com/pubs/firewall-seen.html
====================
That lot should keep you going for a while (bit of light bedtime reading
for you!) Have fun and if you get stuck give me a buzz....
8-)
