GPL: I can't believe this game is still so popular

Why GPL remained popular four years on

A newcomer asked why the nearly four-year-old Grand Prix Legends was still discussed so much. Regulars cited its strong add-on community, realistic physics and good online play, and the lack of any equal on all counts, while some argued newer sims such as N2002 and F1 2002 were technically superior. Alan Bernardo objected to calling any game the best, and the thread drifted into golf sims and football.

GPL, probably a great game during its time. But how old is this game anyway? I remember back when I had a rendition verite 3d video card (you know the guys before 3dfx) and they made GPL to run on its proprietary API called redline or something. I am amazed this game is still so popular on the messageboards today.

It'll be 4 years in September. I think there's three reasons. 1. Strong user community. Add-on tracks and enhanced graphics have kept the game fresh. 2. Absense of competition. No open wheel/roadracing style game has yet matched or bettered GPL on all counts, more specifically the online racing capabilities. 3. Continued support from Papyrus. We got FF, we got improved online play, we (unofficially) got D3D support and it's developers still answer questions from the group. If you own the game, visit the "essentials guide" (not sure what they call it) at racesimcentral, bring your copy up to date and join in the fun. There's lots of life left in the old girl. Jan. =---
Have you driven it? Have you seen the community created additions? Have you run it on a fast system w/a GeForce 4 and the patches? If you're answer to any of these is "no", you should give it a try. well no other game has decent physics aswell as good multiplayer and non-oval tracks. "Joe Masliah" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:Pi5P8.273053$[email hidden]...

Well, I think a *major* factor is that there are really only two games that work really well over the net - the NASCAR series and GPL. Bernie Ecclestone's blind spot over the matter means that no modern F1 sim has internet play, and SCGT for example would need a couple of Crays to get into double figures of cars... whereas GPL can happily support 19 drivers on 28K dialup modems. So, if you want to play online, and you want a car that turns right and weighs less than 38 tons <g>, then GPL is the only way to go. -- England 1 Argentina 0! If it was just an "opinion" there wouldn't be so many people online genuflecting...after all these years And it's not just a popular topic of discussion in this NG, there's a community of thousands enjoying it, hundreds on any given night playing it online, and dozens of dedicated designers like Andre Streu (see "Sachsenring - An Appreciation," above) burning gallons of midnight oil making add-ons for it. If it was just One Man's Opinion, rabid enthusiasts wouldn't have taken the time to craft over 200 new tracks for it. Uh, no. Don't get me wrong, GPL is a great game and I still spend more time with it than other racing games, but it's physics are outdated and incomplete compared to EA's F1 series. A minor technical point that admittedly has little to do with how much fun the game is, but just for the record ISI's physics engine is the current state of the art in automotive simulation gaming. prefer > over GPL-- it would not change anyone's opinion but would just invite more > scoffing.) According to me. I just thought it was witty. How about this: In my opinion, GPL is the most entertaining and satisfying computer game (I know, I know) of any sort available. For more than 3.5 years now I have thoroughly enjoyed the realistic and challenging cars and tracks, and every time I get a good laptime at the Nurburgring, or race for position online, it gets better and better. I have yet to find another computer game, of any genre, that beats or even equals my enjoyment of GPL, although several have come close, including NR2002, Viper Racing, SCGT, Quake3, CMR2, Carmageddon2, I76, Rally Trophy, even Elite on the BBC was not this good, although it's pretty damn close. Doesn't quite have the same ring to it, really. Hope that answers your question. Malc.
Hey, Im "Johny come back to GPL lately" and the part below I quote, but I dont find the "essentials" I see a sheet load of neat and new stuff but Im like overwhelmed on what to get, what not to get!!! is there really an essentials list anyone could give me, as Im not in a big hurry to get racks, but most of the stuff over time would be good. what is an idea about 16 bit gfx, should I have it with my p3-800 with G-F 2? Man I wish papy would have leased the code used for WinVrock and implemented similiar for thier online client... wow that thing is awesome, everything you ever needed to join or host a race online... WOW! again, as I found some 1000+ setups somewhere and I an restarting my training when I can find time, at monza... LOL you have to give me a tiny break though, I mean Im use to like 5 corners max <G> except the couple roadcourse in NR2002... Im able to do 1.29.3? with a eagle at the moment... not consistantly but at leas one lap each race is that fast... thanks Jan, Plowboy "Jan Verschueren" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:sx5P8.35770$[email hidden]...

What you say is fine; and I give credit to GPL for being a great game. But this is all opinion. To someone else, Sega GT is the best game. If you or anyone else thinks GPL is the greatest racing simulation, that's fine. But you go beyond things when you say, categorically, any game is the best ever. I like GPL because it offers the best online racing experience. If another sim ever replaces that aspect of GPL, it will fade away like all games eventually do. NR 2002 has replaced GPL for some people, but not everybody - the cars just aren't as much fun to drive on road courses as the open-wheel cars are. Here's a thought: maybe most game developers don't WANT to create good online racing, because they'd rather sell a new release every season instead of having a fanatical fan base stick with the same old game for 3 years!

I agree with what Jan said. The other 2 things that have kept me coming back are: - Subject matter. 1967 F1. No wings. 3-liters. Lotus 49. Nurburgring. Probably the greatest season in GP history, from a nostalgic and technical standpoint. - 100% Simulation. No bullshit. No compromises. Papyrus are clearly more interested in the business of trying to create the most realistic driving experience possible rather than catering to what a race fan thinks a racing game should be like. Surely this hurts them somewhat sales-wise (unless NASCAR is slapped on the box) but fuck it. I want to drive a simulation of a race car, not be enthralled by graphics and an exagerrated sense of speed while driving something that is close enough to a race car to convince most people. And of course, I'd re-emphasize everything Jan listed. Multiplayer + dedicated mod-making community = longevity. LOL At 25, could do 100m in 11.4 s. At 38 years of age, I'll still show most 25 year olds in my district a clean pair of heels over a mile, such is the couch potato culture we live in. Last real run out was the Fleet 1/2 marathon two years ago. 1Hr 26mins MS
N2002 certainly is a step up from GPL in terms of physics modelling, with the inclusion of tire wear and downforce. But I believe it still uses a simplified suspension model. EA's F1 series actually models the dynamics of the suspension links. Again, whether or not that makes it a better game is a separate issue, I am only commenting on which game appears to have the most accurate and complete physics. I thought the suspension links were modelled in GPL as well? Does EA do dynamic camber, does N2k2 ? Jan. =---

I disagree. As a simmer, playing Links is just a click-fest... click, click, click... Ooh, I've just got it in the hole! Anything that doesn't provide a proper Trueswing type of play isn't a golf 'sim' imho. Yes, I know they've implemented some kind of technology, but it still sounds rather clunky. (click before the ball/after the ball contact, etc) Having said that, PGA2000 was removed from my HD long, long ago because it was oh so frustrating and almost random at times when it came to calculating how hard I had hit the ball and in which direction, based upon my mouse movement. And this after playing well over a 100 rounds of golf on the damned thing. Just when you wanted to lay up short with a soft shot to keep away from the hazard off the back of the green and it would somehow hammer it an extra 30 yards. Want to play with a touch of draw to avoid the water on the right? Shame, looks like you've gone and sliced it! Anyway, this is way OT, so I recommend: http://www.fhmus.com/images/reporter/slacker/miniputt.swf -- Peter Ives Remove ALL_STRESS before replying via email If you know what's good for you, don't listen to me GPLRank Joystick -50.63 Wheel -21.77
They are shown graphically, but the general opinion (not proof, admittedly) has been that GPL uses fixed roll centers to model suspension movement. This would also explain why they show wheel rates rather than spring rates, because that is also part of the simplified suspension model. Hmm, since we do get to see real rates in N4/N2002, perhaps they are modelling the links in the NASCAR products. Regarding dynamic camber, I think they all do, but in different ways. I don't know how you could even come close to the right handling if you didn't. I suspect GPL uses some kind of a curve fit to alter the camber. For the EA/ISI model it would fall out as a natural consequence of the suspension kinematics. "Jan Verschueren" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:IVuP8.37259$[email hidden]...

I wonder if we're talking about the same thing here... I meant do the wheels change camber as they move up and down, e.g. do the rear wheel get more positive camber when the car squats? -I'm pretty sure it was confirmed GPL does not model this. Jan. =---

I had it completely sussed - or so I thought - with PGA2000 and that's why, when it did the complete opposite to my mouse actions, I got really p*ss*d off at the thing. I could explain how to make hooks or slices easier to do, but wrong NG for that. Jan, I was basing what I said on things that I have read here and at various web sites, but I know I can't prove any of it. So you might be right on all points. It does seem a bit inconsistent though that GPL would model actual links and yet not include dynamic camber. How can you have one and not the other? And yes I'm pretty sure we are talking about the same thing. Dynamic camber happens because of the links. If you model the links correctly the tire should change camber correctly as it moves up and down. The only way that it couldn't do that is if you were treating it like a beam axle. Also with regards to the fixed roll centers, my assumption here is based on the fact that GPL cars behave much like old swing axle cars. Even Alison Hine has commented on this. High fixed roll centers would explain this. That would also explain to some degree why most hot setups have extremely stiff ARB's combined with soft springs and dampers. IIRC that is exactly the opposite of the way people set their cars up in the 60's. Stiff springs and dampers with little or nothing in the way of ARB's was considered the hot setup for roadracing back then IF you had proper suspension. Stiff ARB's were only used on swing axle cars, because it was the only way to keep them from rolling over. Anyway it's all conjecture on my part, if you know that I am wrong then so be it. ;o) "Jan Verschueren" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:HbCP8.37408$[email hidden]...

Surely it would have been better to precede your post with "HereI > go again" ? > > Can't stand golfing games myself. > > Malc. >I said that anyone else should agree with me? I don't get what you mean. Concept-- easy to understand, people like different games. I like a game for particular reasons. You don't like the same game for particular reasons. Who is right? Both of us. Is that hard to understand? Alanb

I play PGA 2000 Titanium constantly. You're also responding to a post I made at least a month ago and taking it completely out of context of the thread. Personally, I like to reserve the phrase "here we go again" to something that is in the process of occurring or has recently occurred. In the context of replying to something that was said over one month ago, it seems strangely out of place. >Might it not have been better to say, "computer golf is about as >interesting" to me "as computer landscaping"? If I'm making a subjective statement, the average-to-intelligent person would assume that it was my opinion. If it weren't my opinion, why would I be offering it? Let me offer an example, to clarify the point further: Jason moyer said: > Modern Formula One circuits are shite. There are a few pieces of information you need to properly process this sentence: A. the statement itself B. the person making the statement In this particular example, variable A = "Modern Formula One circuits are shite." and variable B = "Jason Moyer" aka me aka the person making the subjective statement contained within variable A. The conclusion that can be logically drawn from this information is that variable B, "Jason Moyer" aka me aka the person making this statement, of sound mind and body hereby holds true the opinion of variable A, that is, "Modern Formula One circuits are shite." QED, Jason Moyer believes that modern formula one circuits are shite. Class, are we all together on this one? > Some agree with you, while others >agree with me. That's the way it goes. Welcome to planet earth. May I please see your passport? Jason
