rFactor purchase frustrations with PayPal and gamepad

Chang Liu complained that paying for rFactor by PayPal delayed his key, then that it crashed and handled poorly with a gamepad. Others said the PayPal delay was documented, blamed his lack of a wheel, and Dave Henrie helped fix the crash by disabling the internet check in the player file.

They didn't say anything about if you pay with paypal you don' get the code until they "process" your order. Idiots.
You must have an incredibly easy and worryless life, indeed, to air your "frustrations" before so many people. ---A--- On 03.05.2006 14:15, Chang Liu wrote: > They didn't say anything about if you pay with paypal you don' get the > code until they "process" your order. Idiots.

They didn't say anything... because they thought everyone was smart enough to assume that was the case. Apparently, they didn't count on idiots ordering via Paypal.

Paypal was a method of payment. So I took it. What a fool I am for buying a game. I should of just sticked to good old warez. Chang, the world if full of rip-offs and con-men etc. Everytime I go to the store, and write a check, they punch in my account number to see if I have a 'history' of writing bad checks. One of the main selling points of debit cards is that the merchant can tell almost instantly if I have enough funds to pay for an item. Pay Pal was originally designed to be a 'safe' and 'trustworthy' alternative to stolen credit cards and/or identity theft. However, I think it wouldn't take very long searching the net to find hundreds if not thousands of Pay Pal scams. So the fact the company that ISI contracted with to collect funds WAITS til the transaction has been completed, does not suprise me in the least. Remember, every financial security measure ever devised is in response to a theft. They don't sit around brainstorming possible ways we can steal, they have a record in this or other businesses that clearly show we will steal. Ebay didn't integrate pay pal when they first started. Only after a wave of credit thefts did a Third Party come forth with the idea of Pay Pal. I doubt Ebay would still be around if Pay Pal had not step forward. Using Pay Pal shows you are not a fool, it shows you have or had concerns about ease of payment and security. So why lamblast ISI/Trimedia for having the very same concerns? In the end, you will receive your product and be ready to race. Would the delay in waiting for a Pay Pal confirmation be any longer than ordering a disc via the mail? As to wares. Clearly one person using wares won't hurt ISI or any other software company. But the repeated use of flooding of such products will destroy the marketplace for sims. So unless you have some super-duper racing sim almost coded and ready for sale...I urge you and others to continue to support the people who CAN make these titles. I know I cannot. dave henrie

Just an idea but Rfactor doesn't play well with some antivirus programs. Try disabling yours and then launch it again. I believe you have 48 hours to decide whether you want it or not. Personally I love it. At first it is a bit of a pain getting all the mods and tracks but it is well worth it in my opinion. If you decide you like it email me and I will send you the links to find all or at least most of the mods/tracks available. Remember, all pc games have their quirks. Any security, ANY Copy-Protection can be compromised by persistant people. But Pay Pal is a huge part of on-line comerce. So any company that wishes to remain a company is well served by taking whatever additional steps they can. If Trimedia holds on to your code for a day or two...good for them. Now if they screw up and do not issue a code to a properly paying user...THEN you have plenty of room to gripe and complain. dave henrie
I am thinking about getting a refund. The graphics aren't that great for one probably because of its old game engine. The physics aren't that great either... Unless your playing these games with a wheel any jerky movements will send you into a spin even if you didn't break that heavily. Pretty annoying.. I don't drive with assists so everything is off. even ABS. but full breaking didn't lock the wheels up immediately only after like a few seconds.. Thats kind of strange.. In the small NASCAR oval track.. Only there can a few nasty drifts be pulled off because of the banked roads.. or because I don't feel like braking and then I see in the rear mirror a huge cloud of smoke. :) Hehe Maybe if I have a wheel this game would be fun.. But right now with this analoge controller its no fun at all.. Compared to RBR this track driving is pissing me off. Although the AI is rather easy and nice. They rather stop after you had an accident instead of going around you.. I haven't had the AI spin me out so far unlike in Forza where they are super aggressive. After all these patches I didn't see that many improvements... And online play where I have to go hunt for maps offline.. Haha! How convenient.. And I payed for this game too.. :| RBR + LFS Demo multiplayer is all I need for now.. After I get a wheel I might repurchase this game. But I doubt it because I would probably spend most of my time playing RBR. :) Dave Henrie wrote:

Anything you have to say about anything simracing related is now officially USELESS, Chang. Get a wheel then when you come back with something to contribute you might have a semblance of credibility. Though you may not be an official troll youre close enough that I dont want to waste my time reading your (no wheel) nonsense. Do us all a favor and take the refund. "Unless your playing these games with a wheel.." - Why buy a sim and not have a wheel already? I could never understand why, in a world where a cheapo wheel/pedal combo can be had virtually anywhere for a pittance, someone would buy a driving sim and use a joystick or keyboard. "Now the game crashes and wouldn't even load..." - Seems that you resolved that issue. Lemme guess, user error? "After all these patches I didn't see that many improvements..." - How would you know? Last I checked, the download was the latest official patch version (ver. 1070), so you wouldn't have seen the previous versions. What are you comparing it to? And using either of 2 beta patches isn't a valid argument, as they are....ready?... "BETA".

It could be a firewall. rFactor needs access to the internet. If it can't it hangs trying to access the net. There is a line of text in your driver's plr file that will disable this. open your plr file with a text editor and search for this line: Disable NetComm="0" // If 1, network features are disabled Change the 0 to a 1. save and exit. then try restarting rf. or...try disabling your firewall while you attempt to start rf. good luck dave henrie

:) I make times on RBR without a wheel. Its not the lack of skill of lack of hardware. I don't have credibility but I don't share your perspective. My perspective I can't deal with the game without a wheel and I think you would feel the same way if you were in my position. However, your not. Its not nonsense. I am just not a rich boy with a $1,500 wheel and the top of the line machine. Mitch wrote:

Thanks Dave. It works fine now. Just that I don't have any of the maps so I can't really play online. At least you try to help where some others enjoy bashing me instead. Dave Henrie wrote:

I was trying to do offline races to just see how they are and before the tracks load the game stops and I get a error msg because the program crashed. Just tried it again a few times on different tracks and then it finally stopped crashing.

Sometimes you have to get your priorities straight. ;-) But you don't need to spend a lot of a wheel. What's important is using something with much more of an analogue range than any gamepad can offer... unless you have the fine-tuned finger control of a brain surgeon! Even a joystick will do for steering. You really do need pedals for brake & throttle though. Mixing them on the joystick makes life very hard. Andrew McP

RBR was developed from the start with the console market in mind; thus it's natural for it to have better support for digital controllers (and for it to suffer from console-style menus). rFactor was developed and targeted towards the PC sim market, where the standard controller is an analog, force feedback wheel and pedals, so extensive support for the type of controllers you're using was just not going to be a high priority item. You'd be hard-pressed (no pun intended) to control a real car with a pushbutton controller, and the same is true of a sim. Besides, the point is not so much what times you can achieve, but how you experience the game. While there is enough support to make it doable, if you play without a force feedback wheel and pedals, you're going to be missing a lot of the experience that the development effort went towards providing. As for the rich boy thing, you can buy perfectly good FF wheels all day long for less than $100US. You're swimming in a different pond here; don't be so surprised that the fish are different... ;-) SB
