Act Labs Force RS or Logitech Momo?

Ivtyf asked whether to buy an Act Labs Force RS or a Logitech Momo. Replies split: some praised Act Labs support and improved replacement pedals, others had pedal springs fail, and most praised the Momo wheel while disliking its pedals. Larry said his Microsoft wheel kept returning to his desk.

hardware: wheels/pedals

Which would you choose? And why? Are the 3 axis pedals sold by Act Labs really worth it? What about RS shifter? Thank you in advance, Ivtyf
O yes, I have the Momo with the Act Labs Pedals it is a GREAT Combo. "David L. Cook" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:AODQ8.8985$[email hidden]...

David, I agree with everything Stephane said abt. the MOMO, *except* he must have been playing with games that don't allow brake locking. To complain abt. the throttle travel being too short w/o mentioning the lack of brake-pedal travel is unconscionable. I spent hours stiffening the resistance and fiddling with the shape of the response curve (in DXTweak2), and there was only a fraction of an inch between free-wheeling and smoke pouring off all four tires in GPL. The MOMO is the best...providing you use 3rd-party pedals like TSW or (Down Under) Redline. --Steve "David L. Cook" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:AODQ8.8985$[email hidden]...

> Which would you choose? And why? Are the 3 axis pedals sold by Act Labs > really worth it? What about RS shifter? Thank you in advance, > > Ivtyf From personal experience, avoid the Act Labs pedals. I got the AL performance pedals for Christmas 2001 and replaced springs 3 times. I sold the whole wheel/pedal/shifter on Ebay a few weeks ago. I feel that the build quality is not up to par and they (A-L) don't seem compelled to fix the problem or even acknowledge the issue. I sent them several emails about the problems I was having and got canned, generic email replies that new springs were on the way. I got the "new" springs and they don't seem any different than the ones that I had. I bought a TSW2 wheel/pedal setup as a replacement. THIS is the wheel that I should have originally. Now, the shifter from A-L is a different story. This is the best invention yet for PC racing sims. Like I said, I sold the whole AL setup and got the TSW2. But I ordered the GPL USB shifter from AL. This model is compatible with ALL wheels and plugs in as a USB device. Works greats. If you have to have the FF, most recommendations point to the MOMO. I looked at them at Best Buy, and I didn't like the pedals. They look like the same pedals from the original LWFF (Big Red) wheel that I still own. People have said that they work better, but I wasn't convinced. IF FF isn't a big deal, I would highly suggest the TSW line of wheels. You can customize it to your exact needs and desires and can always add on later. I skipped the clutch pedal for now as the one on the AL, I never used, except as a "novelty". If racign games start to truly use the clutch, I'll have TSW add it in. Hope this helps. Dave

Momo Wheel Great. Momo Pedals are terrible, unless you drive Tractors for a living and have size 8 feet. -Larry "Ivtyf" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:hkyQ8.330193$[email hidden]... > Which would you choose? Nothing is wrong. What issues are you having? What pedals are you using? FYI - I have the pedals mounted on a angled stand and I use a Honda Prelude seat mounted on a raised base. If your talking about using a setup in a desk chair with pedals on the floor well then any set is going to be bad. "Larry" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:YzIQ8.61496$[email hidden]...

I had some Performance Pedals from that first production run and they were pretty lumpy. Mine self destructed and were promptly replaced by Act-Labs. The new ones are MUCH improved and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them.

If you like your FF strong, the AL is great. RC2000 at 100% is very fun, just make sure everything on your desk is secure (I had to velcro down my front speakers!) I've heard mixed things about the 3-pedal set, mainly around durability, but hopefully these were just teething problems. I use my trusty Thrustmaster NASCAR pro pedals with my wheel, so really can't comment on how you'd like the stock AL pedals long-term. For something like GPL, the shifter is a *must-have* - but you can get the USB shifter for the momo if you want. I checked out the Momo at my local Best Buy, and I'd love to try one out at home - it felt very nice, probably the ideal compliment to an F1 game. I seriously doubt you'd go worng with either one. Never mind what? You made a statement and don't want to back it up now? Just curious what your using and what issues your having with the momo pedals. Some people don't like them but that can be said for any pedals/wheel. Some people find the squash ball mod helps a lot but I tried it and prefer it without. Like everything else it comes down to driving style and what a person likes. "Larry" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:DKRQ8.63677$[email hidden]...

It was a FUNNY, not a statement. Please reference the SMILEY at the end of what I wrote... You obviously didn't get it. As for the Momo pedals, they SUCK. The throw is too short. The angle of the swivel is all wrong. The angle of teh throw is all wrong. With the exception of the Mad Katz Andretti Wheel Pedals from a few years ago, I find them to be the worse pedals ever put in the box with any wheel set, much less a $200 wheel set. When I take the pedals out of a $200 box, I shouldn't have to modify anything to make them useful, and in this case there's no squash ball on the planet that is going to solve all the problems with the Momo pedals. I'm glad you like them. MSFFW. I've bought several wheels since I got this 2 years ago. Tried them, and inevitably the MSFFW always ends up back on the desk. It is durable as hell, the pedals are superb, and it just keeps on a tickin'. The optical pots mean zero failures or calibration issues. Now, if Microsoft would only update the SideWinder software, instead of giving it a totally bogus WHQL certification in it's current sad, not-updated-for-two-years state. I guess when you run the lab and write the rules, you can get away with anything you want :) -Larry "Schooner" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:xV4R8.28656$[email hidden]...

Like everyone says - with Momo, wheel is great, pedals are BAD. I tried and tried with them. Did the squash ball mod - which is a nice mod - and that helped a little, but my consistency was shot. Completely. Heel-toeing is a virtual impossibility. As an experiment, attached my old NASCAR Pro to the gameport and ran with it's pedals. Only then did I realise how truly dire the Momo pedals were. Still using the TM pedals now... I can only recommend the Momo if you can stretch to alternative pedals. I'm currently saving for the BRD set, but the current rig is more than adequate. FWIW I run only N2002, GPL and the very occasional NFS:PU. None of these have issues with me running 4 controllers simultaneously.
