Re: Nascar 2002 frame rates.
P4, 1.8 GHz, g3force 3, 512 ram...os is xp.. this is not the fastest
processor today or the fastest graphics card but should I be able to
get over 30 fps with graphics and sound settings maxed out?
I have read several of the threads here that talk about frame rate
issues. I updated my video drivers (f'n nightmare that ultimately
required regedit!)but if anything, that may have actually slowed me
down by a few frames. Sure.. if take down the number of cars drawn
ahead and to the rear, and cut the number of sounds in half, I can get
it close to 40 frames but my gut is telling me it should be running
faster. Am I correct or is this sim really so cutting edge as to
have been optimized for systems that did not even exist when it hit
the store shelves?
Anyone out there with a similar system, can you tell me how you have
the graphics set up to keep the frame rates above 30? Can anyone
with ANY system run this with everything maxed out and keep it over 30
frames? If yes, what are you running?
Thanks everyone. Oh..one last note - I am an old time combat flight
simmer. New to racing. I have often watched Nascar on TV but man oh
man... I never would have guessed it was this hard! Having a great
time with this sim and look forward to going on-line - once I figure
out how to take a lap with out killing someone.
Regards,
Gil
Turn sounds down to eight and reflections off. Reflections cause a pretty
large fps hit. OpenGL will probably give you more fps. Mirror is the biggest
drain though.
I have a P4 1.6 and GF2 Ti and frame rate is always above 40 for me.
Anything below that gives me a headache.

setting to 100% linear. Makes the cars a lot easier to control.

I have almost the idential system except my video = G3 Ti500.
I run at 1280x1024 in Open GL. Make sure that you turn off AA and then just
play with the detail settings in the game until you are happy.

I have a P4 1.4, GF 2, 384 megs of rambus using Win98............never go
below 60 fps online, everything maxed out, no reflections.

You should be closer to 50 fps
than 30 with nearly all detail maxed, Quin AA, no Anis, with that rig.
First hint was when you say you had to do some regediting to get the video
drivers loaded. Thats obviously a *bad* sign. You might check your desktop
color depth and be sure it's 16bpp to match your 3d setup in-game.

Also, make sure v-sync is off. There are several other tweaks to look
at. I don't have any links at the moment, but if you look around you
can probably find a good guide if you search. But AA and V-sync are
probably the big ones. Oh and also run in OpenGL using 16bit color.

just
x2 FSAA doesn't really affect my fps at all. Makes it look a lot better
though.

I have it at about 35 fps as follows:
In open GL at 1024x769x16, all details maxed, drawing distance at 100%
with max opp 42 forward and rear. No reflextions. Sounds played 16.
Antialiasing 2x. Vsync off. On the line at start of race
(California) with 42 cars FPS shows 30 but by the time the pace car
goes in the fps are at 35 and then, when we spread out a bit, they get
into or around 40.
I guess this is not too bad. Thanks again folks. Now I still need to
learn how to drive. The AI cars are way agressive. They seem to be
able to bump me with no ill effect on their own control.
Take Care all.
Gil
42 forward and rear? Shouldn't need more than three in rear view mirror and
maybe 25 forward. Sounds down to eight should improve fps and I doubt you'll
notice any difference in what you hear. Remember to try your wheel linear
setting at 100%

What resolution do you run in?

I have everything on full (Except Anistropic Filtering) at 1280X1024X16 and
I'm usually over 100fps in testing and 50-60fps in a full field race.
Mirrors on full as well.

Ok, your system is a LOT faster than mine(1.2G, V5). The highest I've *ever*
seen is about 72fps - that's at 1024x768, I think. Full field drops to
37-50fps.
