GP4 Yes/No?

Should I buy GP4 or F1 2002?

Mike Beauchamp asked whether to buy GP4 or stick with F1 2002, and most replies favoured F1 2002 for its physics and coming mods, though one called GP4 the better sim. An odd rear-view mirror in a screenshot was explained, and the thread drifted into store refund policies.

Hey all, There's a lot of talk about GP4 in here, as well as a lot of sarcasm :) So, plain and simple.. should I be getting GP4 or stick with F12002? Thanks guys! Mike http://mikebeauchamp.com
I was just looking at this screenshot: http://www.gamesdomain.com/gdreview/zones/reviews/pc/jun02/gp4_082.html does the car in the rear view mirror make any sense to anyone? Mike http://mikebeauchamp.com "Mike Beauchamp" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:uwbR8.79058$[email hidden]...

If you want frustration in a box, get GP4.. If you want endless ours of no hassle enjoyment and the mods that will soon be coming thick and fast, get F1 2002.
If you like pivotpoint physics, with no tirewear etc, then get GP4 or Colin McRae, If you like GPL, and Nascar 4, then get F1 2002. "Mike Beauchamp" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:uwbR8.79058$[email hidden]...

Do you have GP3? Do you plan to stick with W98 for a while longer? If so, stick to GP3 and wait for a GP4 demo to be released. Or download the full version off the net and use that as a demo. Opinions vary so much for this game noone can really tell you if you want it or not, you'll just have to test for yourself. As for my personal opinion (in case you managed to miss my other posts). GP4 = updated graphics, animated pit crew, little else that GP3 didn't already offer. No safety car. No stop-go or drivethrough penalties. AI controlled cars will happily race you when you're on a qualifying hotlap while they just drove out of the pits. It's just like GP3. -- Frode
God I dislike the pivot-point physics in CMR2. I presume that is the car that "Alesi" took out as he span out, and that car has ended up facing the wrong way in the gravel trap. I also hope that the graphics have been set to only show cars, and no other details - thus an explanation for that? I think so cos that "driver aid" that shows the cars as yellow dots from a birdseye view, shows a car in the gravel trap. Strange they did the screen shots without full graphics on, or maybe they weren't done then. "Mike Beauchamp" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:iLgR8.60239$[email hidden]...

What you are seeing is carried over from at least F1 2001. Even If you are more 90 degrees sideways you will still see the cars behind you as if you were pointed correctly down the track.(provided the car is within your rear field of view which seems to be defined NOT by the orientation of the car but rather it's place on the track) Consider it a flaw or perhaps just a hack to keep frame rates up. If I remember correctly, ICR2 didn't really display a real rearview in the mirrors, they just had about a thousand car bitmap files that could approximate on the mirror where the cars behind you were. I think it was DGF who found that in N2002, if you turned your car 180 degrees and faced the wrong way on a track, you could still only see a short distance, just like the view in the mirror fades out quickly...You could see for a mile or more facing to the front, but the rear view even when facing backwards was much shorter. Anyhow back to your picture.....if you are trying to re-enter the track after looping the car into the kitty litter, are you watching the track or your mirrors? :) dave henrie

Hehe :). The thing is, I don't really care what there policy is as I'm protected by my consumer rights. I reject things if they are not up to scratch. I may buy GP4 just so I can take it back and complain about it. <G> Gerry

They are the same company in name only - the original EB only own 20 percent of the "EB" in the UK. / .mitch - \

And so we go back to Crammond, does anyone else remember "Revs"? In that game, if you drove the wrong way round the track (against traffic) you'd still be looking at the gearboxes of the other cars, as they came round, not their noses. John

The EB in the UK is not the same EB as that in the US. US EB sold UK EB to GAME some time ago. So UK EB has really been GAME, and now all the UK EB stores are being refitted as GAME stores, or closed (delete as applicable). cheers John

To be fair, REVS wasn't running on the most powerful of machines, was it? Yes, more could possibly have been done - but it would have taken more memory / processor power - which was probably already dedicated to actually making the game possible!!

UK EB was effectively a franchise... it was paying US EB for the right to use the name, but was otherwise a separate company... UK EB bought out GAME... they then decided they wanted to drop the EB tag, so as to avoid paying US EB... as UK EB already owned GAME, and GAME was still an operating trade name, they have been in the process of rebranding everything to GAME...
hi tony are you racing T-cam view ? yet the mirrors are useful to you...hmmm I kinda of like that since T-cam view gives a good compromise to 2D monitor screen for the 3D sense of play I used to use the "lookback" view in F1 2000 which on second pressing returns me to the previous view but not in GP4 It is not very intuitive to use. Say, a limit of 4-5 no-hassles returns a year, and you need photo ID for a refund? Seems simple enough. Would eliminate the pirates without punishing everyone else. The refund policy was THE reason I shopped at EB in the first place, even back when they always had new releases first and you had to pay extra $ for the privilege. I've spent thousands there over the years, but now really have no reason to shop there.
