T1 at the real Nurburgring sure looks like it opens up a hell of a lot wider
than it does in this pic from F12002.

F1 2002's Nurburgring turn 1 looks wrong
David G Fisher posted screenshots showing F1 2002's new Nurburgring turn 1 was narrower and lacked the real track's camber, and others agreed the tracks were disappointing. Magnus Svensson, who walked the circuit, described the real elevation and camber. The thread also covered graphics settings and how Ralph Hummerich's carset moved the mirrors.

apparently not wide enough for DC & JPM!

I agree.
Additionally, the real track has a massive camber change at the apex and
also appears to have a slight downward grade towards the next corner,
whereas in F12002 there is an upward grade to the same corner.
The tracks really are disappointing in F12002 for the most part IMO.
Hopefully the track editing gurus will be able to work these things out over
time.

As an aside... is that a real PC screenshot? The graphics are pretty
nice... almost too nice like those on the back of a game box.

Yes, that's from my PC. That's with a GF2Ti and at only 800 x 600. Looks
even better at higher res, and I'm sure a GF4 would add a little bit to it
as well. I just added some more screenshots for you.

These TAKE THE PISS out of GP4 so bad it's Funny.

Are you implying that F12001 has inaccurate tracks?!?

Yeah,
Up until yesterday, I never really understood what all the complaints
about track accuracy were for, I never noticed anything way off......
Then after I watched the GP, I played F1 2002 on the Nurburgring, and
boy, that first turn is MILES different!
Like you said, no camber in the game, its just totally flat!

I Agree, i cant see anyone thinking that GP4 looks better. Some screens may
look
good but in game. Yikes. the terrible lightning on cars, the mirrors on
them. the terrible lods that converts the F1 car infrotn of you to a 4sided
block.. yikes.

The real thing looks very wrong to me too. I mean, the track only used to
have one Mickey Mouse bit (last chicane). What's up with this kart section
they added?

Is this not down to the fact that F1 2002 doesn't model any of the track
changes for 2002? T1 at the Ring was changed quite dramatically for the
2002 race. None of the changes at Montreal were implemented either.

That's hopefully the reason I'm over 3 seconds down on the time the real
cars were doing !! ;)
They've also changed the Hockenheim track to reflect the real track changes
in 2002.

They have the layout correct for the 2002 'Ring, but the width , camber and
elevation is wrong. The incorrect width was what surprised me most.

Who all started out in karts, no doubt. <g>
Seriously, that amazes me... I can see the attraction of a hairpin following
the straight, but the section to join the "original" layout appears of the
"snore" variety to me. Then again, they're in the car, so who am I to argue?

Just did a comparison on my P3 1Ghz, GF2GTS:
I run GP4 with "high detail cars" and and I see _nothing_ of the
early LOD change from previous versions of GPx
In fact - on my rig - F12002 (with max gfx detail) simplifies car
way before GP4 does?
Also, with high detail track in GP4, distant objects do not pop
up like they do in F12002 with full detail
But lightning and reflection on cars is way better in F12002
It's amazing how games perform different on peoples computers.

We would have to find out when ISI got track info about the changes
and IF the FIA altered those after releasing them. 2nd perhaps ISI got
correct blueprints but no elevation stuff and just guessed? I wouldn't be
suprised if they didn't really have much to go on to construct the
addition. Since it's pretty clear they don't travel the globe verifying
their tracks, they got this one pretty much all wrong.
I haven't seen f1 2002 yet...did they get the extra asphalt instead of
kitty litter for the run-off areas? (think what would have happened to MS if
he had spun into a nice thick patch of gravel!!)
Finally from the little I can see of your screen shots, the approach
looks too narrow as well. Looking at the start, I thought I was seeing
CART's Cleveland Burke International Airport track. I'm suprised the JPM
took such an extreme inside line to defend the start and DC's pass. He
should have know those inside lines don't work at Cleveland either.
(of course no big curb to hop over in Cleveland and whip your car around)

There's a patch of grass before the asphalt begins at T1.

Those were taken at 16 bit color, 2 x FSAA, GF2Ti, 800 x 600, all graphics
maxed except circuit detail was set to high instead of full. The cockpit is
the default FOV that ships with the game. No detail levels were tweaked. The
only change I've made to the game so far is that I'm using Ralph Hummerich's
2002 car set.
The screens actually look even better before they are converted to a jpeg.

The T1 was pretty interesting to see in real life, as it's downhill in
the brake zone and changes both elevation and camber quite
dramatically. About ten meters in from the apex I would estimate the
difference between the inside edges of the track to be two-three
meters or so! It's also 17-18m wide according to the leaflets you got

This is the cockpit view with RH's Ferrari.

This is the cockpit view in the Ferrari that ships with the game.

The mirrors have been moved back with the new car shape in RH's car set.
That's why it looks like the FOV has changed.

changed the FOV. And I also think that the carset is the reason your
screenshots look so much better than the way it looks on my PC. I guess
I'll have to give that a try.
