Whats the best graphics card available at the moment for sub 100.00
When I say "best" I mean for gaming use mainly, not CAD, etc.
Games used will be GPL, GP3 & GP4, F12002, Return to castle wolfenstein,
GTA3, etc.
Thanks.

Best graphics card under 100 pounds
A UK poster asked for the best gaming card under 100 pounds. Recommendations included the GeForce3 Ti200, GeForce2 Ultra and Radeon 8500, with warnings against the GeForce4 MX and debate over ATI drivers and the value of GeForce3 cards. A side thread explained the pound sign to Americans.

You can probably get a Geforce 2 Ti 200 for that - perhaps a Ti500.
Avoid Geforce 4 MX's. Despite the name - they're slower than the above
Doug
I'd guess a Geforce 3 Ti 200?

Okay, seeing as how you asked (I hope all the symbols come out OK on

According to the Oxford English Dictionary, "originally, a pound of
silver". The sign is, indeed, a curly letter L (from the Roman
measure "libra" - see also the scales Libra carries and so on).
It's also from "libra" that we get the standard (British, anyway)
abbreviation for a pound weight, "lb". We virtually always refer to
"#" as "hash sign" in the UK, so it gets highly confusing when an
American refers to it as a "pound sign" - comething completely
different over here!

Wait Dave, now I'm totally confused... If I understood DB then the "Hash

what you all call the pound sign) isn't on my KB. Oh nevermind... LOL

Skip the GF3 and below. Either go with a Radeon 8500, or a GF4 (non MX)
to ensure decent future ability.

Fine, but the questioner specifically said "for below 100". A card
that's good, but too expensive for his budget is not a reasonable
answer to the question!

True, the GF3s are realtively useless, but a decent (i.e., non-MX) GF4 is
way over his budget (the best value of the lot is the Ti 4400; close to $300
U.S.), which is why I recommended a $100 GF2 Ultra (or GTS Pro). They work
fine with everything up to DX 8.1 games.

The 128MB GF4 4200 is a sweet card. Built another machine last week &
use this card. Got it last month at BestBuy for $230. Goes good with
the XP1800+ on an Asus A7V333.

The test reports on the Matrox Parhelia are starting to trickle out (the
viel of silence lifted today), and it doesn't look real promising so far.
Just about everything out there is kicking it's ass, with the exception of a
couple of tests. Since they are coming out with this at the tail end of the
Radeon 8500 life-cycle, and the NV30 isn't far behind, this does not bode
well for Matrox when it comes to hard-core gaming.
Technologically, the card is a marvel. But, that monstrous 80 million
transister chip is keeping the clock speeds down, and it is showing badly.
I'm looking to replace my Ti500, but it's so hard to do anything right now
with the Radeon R250/R300 coming out soon.
Oh, and there is a _rumor_ of ATI Price Drops this week in preparation of
the release of the new stuff...

Now to buy a decent vid card.
Regarding the GeForce 3 Ti200....
There seems to be many variants? are they all the same or wot?
I've just bought Micro Mart (June 20th Edition) and it has loads of ads
for mail order/net purchase.
Many companies have more than one GeForce 3 Ti200, eg: www.aria.co.uk have
an ad which has:
Hercules Prophet III GeForce 3 Ti200 64mb = 142.00
Sparkle SP700T GeForce 3 Ti200 64mb DDR = 83.00
Whats the difference apart from the maker? is performance different?

Bucks down? Getta GF2 Ultra. IMO.

Yer point being...???
*My* point was that compared to a GF2 Ultra it's bloody expensive, and
compared to a GF4 4400 it's not as fast...nor does it take full advantage of
DX8x. On its own, tho, it's a very fine video card.

You sure you're not mixing GF3 series with the GF4MX series?
$90 for a GF3Ti200 is hardly 'bloody expensive' either... IMHO.

Umm... I'm not trying to pick a fight but the original post you
responded to talked about Ti200's. -"all GF3 are lame".
Besides, a quick look at pricewatch quotes the cheapest Ti500's at
about $140 and the cheapest GF2 Ultra at $213. GF2Ti's at $60 though.
IMHO, it's $30 well spent to get a Ti200 instead.
But whatever, really.
Ok, no fisticuffs.
I got my GF2 Ultra from eVGA (a great company, BTW) for under $100. It's
fabulous for GPL, but feels increasingly stressed out with later games (like
N2002, MoH:AA, etc.). I'll probably hang onto it until I go for a GP4, but
I'm complusive abt. my Golden Oldies (still have a pair of Voodoo 5s).
