NASCAR Racing 2002 random lockups

Alex Kihurani reported frequent lockups in NASCAR Racing 2002 with a GeForce 256. Suggestions included different Nvidia drivers, VIA chipset drivers, lowering the AGP aperture and removing Daemon Tools. He found older official drivers made the game work.

I finally gave in and bought N2002 at my local EB for $45 (!) (It was just $40 last time I saw, grr..) even though I have N4, but I couldn't resist racing online again. Anyway, I installed the game, installed the patch, changed my resolution to match my desktop's (1024x768x16) and enetered the game. Well, the first time it froze, so I restarted the game. I then calibrated my wheel, changed the graphics options, and clicked done and it locked up. I tried this many times, same effect until the comp locked up completely. I restarted, tried again, same thing, so then I tried the resolution it reccomended (800x600x16) and I could at least change the options and save it. Next, I went to do a test day at Watkins Glen and it locked up. I had to restart and I tried several different tracks with one success until it locked up in the middle of driving. By then, I was extremely frustrated, so I tried Open GL, it didn't help, upgrading my 23.11 drivers to the newest ones and that made things even worse. Then, I uninstalled, cleared the directory, and reinstalled and it didn't work, so then I reinstalled the 23.11 drivers and I'm still having the same problems without the patch. Any help? Here are my system specs: P3 667mhz 133mhz system bus 192mb of RAM 20GB hard drive with 1.5GBs left GeForce 256 w/ 23.11 drivers Aureal Vortex 2 (3d sound isn't enabled) DSL connected through a home wireless network MS FF USB Wheel Returning the game is not an option because here, EB no longer takes returns on open boxes :( Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks, Alex
hehe I finally found a way to beat you Alex...:) I hope you get this figured out....nothing jumps out at me. There are two patches are there not? dave henrie "Alex Kihurani" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:GwaU8.32485$[email hidden]...

Couple of things: First, get the Detonator 29.32 or 29.42 drivers from www.nvidia.com. Second, download the latest patch for NASCAR 2002 - I think it's 1.02 -- --------------------- Rob Berryhill "Alex Kihurani" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:GwaU8.32485$[email hidden]... > I finally gave in and bought N2002 at my local EB for $45 (!) Is it a VIA chipset? You may want to try different versions of the 4-in-1 drivers. That was my problem and the latest drivers WERE the problem and I ended up going back to the drivers that shipped with the board. Brian Oster On Tue, 02 Jul 2002 05:05:42 GMT, "Alex Kihurani" <[email hidden]> wrote:

Hah, but now I wish I didn't buy it at first! I know ppl will be mad at me for saying this, but I should have d/l'd it first to make sure it works and then buy it, oh well... I have the latest patch btw Thanks, Alex "Dave Henrie" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:cOaU8.252066$[email hidden]...

I tried those drivers and they don't offer support for old GeForce 256's. I tried them and ALL of my games locked up. I have the latest patch and tried it again. In 800x600x16, I got a few laps around the Glen and even got to change the setup before it locked! I also got online, but each time it locks somewhere along the way *sigh* It seems it's not the playing of the game that locks it up, it's the navigation of menus and loading of data. I just use the 23.11's, they seem to work fine with everything else. Thanks, Alex "Brian Oster" <bgoster@swbell**nosmap**.com> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

CPU is borderline, but should run it. RAM is marginal, I would suggest 256MB of RAM minimum, I run 1024MB. GF256 is a SERIOUS issue. I have a friend who tried and tired to run NR2002 with a GF256 and could get no satisfaction. You need a 64MB card, even if it is an MX model. I did not see a mention of your OS. If it is Win98SE, you should be fine with the drivers (though the 20+ level drivers are not made for that GF256, you may try something below 23.11, like in the 16's or 17's. The 20+ drivers are for GF2-3-4 lines, check guru3d.com for the latest info) IF you are trying to run the sim in WinXP with that rig, it will be tough but can be done. I'd definitely juice up the RAM, to 512MB or more and would definitely look for a higher end video card too. Good luck.
It does work. Your computer is busted... Seriously, you just have some sort of incompatibility going on. Since it is affecting D3D and OGL, I'd say it's not the game at all, but maybe your Video Card Drivers or some other system issue. -Larry "Alex Kihurani" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:RWjU8.31168$[email hidden]... > Hah, but now I wish I didn't buy it at first! See where your AGP Aperture is set in the BIOS. If it is set to 128MB or higher, try setting it to 64MB. That fixed my OGL problems with the patch. -Larry "Alex Kihurani" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:JYjU8.31169$[email hidden]... > I tried those drivers and they don't offer support for old GeForce 256's.I > tried them and ALL of my games locked up. > > I have the latest patch and tried it again. You've still got a few options left. I think N2002 did have a problem with the 23.11 drivers the 28.32 and 29.80 worked for me. From what you write, sound could be a common denominator. Have you tried disabling sound and see what that does? If this doesn't do anything, you could slow down the RAM settings in your motherboard's BIOS. Maybe N2002 taxes your system a bit much. I assume you aren't overclocking anything, and heat is not a problem, but you might still look into your BIOS and add a waitstate here and there or select a slower timing, to make it more stable. You might also want to check for interrupt problems. The most frequent cause for problems I've seen are background tasks. You might want to use a Process Viewer to check what's running (Windows' Taskmanager isn't enough) and kill everything that shouldn't be running. Something your graphics card (or an older one) has installed that remained in the system are also possible culprits - like menu extensions etc. - are also possible culprits. Don't give up hope yet. I had the "odd" lockup a few weeks ago and traced it back to Daemon tools. Most don't have any issues with the DT defaults but I did, go figure. After uninstalling all has been fine. You're not the only one... I used DaemonTools exclusively until NR2002 came out. At that point, I had to let it go because of the lockups. Oddly, some here have been able to make it work. I don't get it, really :) The real shame is I'm the one that turned everyone on to this method. Installed with the daemon tools, but I just left image mounted, like it was in the drive I guess. And I don't even have the DT icon on the systray thingie. I downgraded to the 12.51 (or 12.41, somewhere around there, the official drivers) stated in the HG F1 2001 forums as the best ones when the game came out (I had poor performance when F1 2001 first came out, but when I changed to those drivers it was silky smooth) The game would work in MP about 10% of the time w/o lockup, so I got 1 or 2 races in, and about 2/3rds of the time I could get a few laps in in test sessions. The BIG thing that was affecting the game was the Daemon tools. I have them loaded for Operation Flahpoint because the copy protection takes quite long w/ the CD in. I closed the program, went into N2002, and it worked! I even exited out and came back on to play online in the past 4 hours or so 4 times and it worked everytime! BTW, my old GeForce 256 still runs it silky smooth at 30+fps with most options at high or medium. I probably should get a better one soon, but I'm tight on money and I can still run new games at 30fps or so. Thanks for all your help! Glad to hear you're up and racing Alex! Just for reference I was using ver 3.11. The latest is 3.16. I'll mess with it later in the week and see if the prob persists. I had no probs prior to the 02 papy patch and seem to recall auto mounting a second drive around the same time so it could be a few things causing the locks. I wonder... DaemonTools has been discussed here numerous times due to how it helps you save your CD, and makes the game more pleasant to deal with. I just wonder if Sierra has noted this, and in NR2002 has place some sort of DaemonTools bomb in NR2002 to stop us from using it ? That has been one of the main reasons DT gets updated as much as it does, to keep up with changes in the games/copy protection routines. -Larry "Alex Kihurani" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:AOuU8.32676$[email hidden]... > I downgraded to the 12.51 (or 12.41, somewhere around there, the official > drivers) stated in the HG F1 2001 forums as the best ones when the gamecame > out (I had poor performance when F1 2001 first came out, but when Ichanged > to those drivers it was silky smooth) The game would work in MP about 10%of > the time w/o lockup, so I got 1 or 2 races in, and about 2/3rds of thetime > I could get a few laps in in test sessions. > > The BIG thing that was affecting the game was the Daemon tools. NP man, I just toss out suggestions based on experience. I figured that your video card would benefit from 'less' drivers than you were using. I have a friend that is running that very CPU and video card (PIII/667 & GF256) in WinXP and we have tweaked and prodded until it will run, around 30 FPS in NR2002 so I figured you could at least get it running even if you had to knock down some of the detail. Glad to hear you can at least turn some laps now, enjoy! Actually, I turned everything up to full except for draw distance and mirror detail, and was getting 30fps, so I'm pleased. Thanks, Alex "SimRacer" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:ZbFU8.2464$[email hidden]... > NP man, I just toss out suggestions based on experience. I figured thatyour
