Well, it seems like nobody appreciates being told they screwed up as
described in my summary of the cautions at Las Vegas, so I'm thinking I
should just zip up the roster crap and ship it off to Eldred.
I absolutely *refuse* to have my integrity questioned. Maybe Tom Pabst
was right afterall. Like him, I don't have time for this kinda crap.
Eldred, you got mail. I've already taken the liberty of deleting myself
from the roster.

John Simmons quits running RASCAR
After criticism of his Las Vegas caution recap, John Simmons announced he would hand over the RASCAR roster and leave. Many thanked him and urged him to stay, while others said his wording, such as calling a move stupid, caused the backlash, and debated whether RASCAR was a league. Some insults were traded, and members suggested moving incident discussions to the Race Sim Central forum.
Automated summary.
John I have been as straightforward as you always are with others, and it
seems to me that you just can't take the criticism that you have given to
others and that was the entire point of my post below. Now maybe you know
how the other guy felt when you stated that he pulled "a stupid move". No
one was asking you to quit, RASCAR. (AAMOF most guys seem to be grateful for
all that you have done for RASCAR).Only that you see your own mistakes as
you so easily see other's. I know it isn't easy to accept responsibility for
things you personally do on the track. Heck I have been there myself. But,
when you come on to the NG and post a summary like that and all but slam the
other guy with a "stupid move" and then turn right around and "sugar-coat"
your own incident. It just does not sit well. You have always been
straightforward with others, why not try to be the same with yourself.
BTW - why not cut the immature BS about quitting, and just move on to the
next track? Afterall you sound like my 5 year old playing with his friends
in the sandbox. "I'm gonna take my toys and leave..." LOL. . :o)

an organized environment but very few have the will or want to put it on.
When someone does step up to 'run' a league, they then have to put up with
the backlash from the very guys that wanted to run in an organized fashion.
It can be a truly a no-win situation in my experience. Running a league is
an all consuming thing, rules, disputes, schedule, actually putting on the
events, and so on.
(I know you guys don't call RASCAR a league, but shy of points racing, it
really is...)
I don't run with you guys, but I do hate to see an otherwise good idea start
to unravel like this.

The biggest problem I have seen of RASCAR (from the outside looking in) is
that you guys don't want to call it a league. Someone has a few rules but
no one officially stands by them and as such it is going to get out of hand.
Either you control it fully or it's nothing more than a pickup race. Seems
you wanted all the good of a league without all the effort and politics well
that isn't going to happen.

Too late - it's a done deal. Y'all have fun. Besides, it's better to
have one person quit (me) than to have to people quit (ginger and

If someone that is running it is to the point of quitting then I would say

Besides, it's better to > have one person quit (me) than to have to people quit (ginger and > mitch).I thought the recap was a nice touch. I would have like to have seen it
combined with another "highlight reel", and perhaps some of the reporting
was a bit too subjective, but people are always going to bitch. Don't leave
the league, just grow a thicker shell. I know I have only raced twice with
RASCAR, and have made at least two "stupid moves"...ok...maybe 3... but I
know I am mature enough to take it if someone called me on it...or showed a
"highlight reel"... like when I looped all by myself in the last race I
attended....
That being said. There really should be rules for this league. I am all in
favor of rules, less chance to bitch when everything is on the table. The
only rule I would hate would be having to make each race, but since that is
kinda against the entire RASCAR idea, I won't worry about that one...

I don't think it's out of hand. I offered up what I thought was a fair
and balanced look at what happened, made objective statements, and was
then told I wasn't making fair calls on incidents cused by others, much
less being "equally harsh" about my own incidents. I've run a few
leagues for both Nascar racing and GPL, and I've made calls that weren't
popular, but NOBODY has ever questioned whether or not my indictments of
my own performance were less than accurate, much less accusing me of not
being harsh enough on myself.
Like I said before - I'm out, and y'all have a grand old time.

Watch the replay, make your own notes on the
incidents, compare them with mine, and see what you come up with.
RASCAR isn't a league. It's a grooup of people that race together
because they want a clean race. To atain that goal, there needs to be
some agreements that everyone has to follow. Beyond that, unless and
until the group starts examining the root causes of the incidents,
nothing will change, and there will continue to be incident-filled
races. This means that they have to be able to admit when they screw
the pooch.
Even with all of that, I really don't feel that I have to sit here and
have my integrity and honesty questioned. I didn't post the recap in
order to coddle people and make them feel good about themselves. At the
same time, I didn't do it to be mean-spirited.
No worries though. I won't be doing it again.

I felt wronged by your critique of the race is all. No one ever wants to
see the other (my) replay though so I just gave up and moved on. I take
responsibility for the incident, just didn't feel it was fair to call a pass
a stupid move and repeat the stoopid part numerous times :) My point being
I didn't just ruin his day as you say but rather he has to take his fair
share of the incident is all I was pointing out. Not in so many words
though.
You're a fast clean racer Simmons! That should be enough said..
I always supported calling this a league and having rules and enforcement
policies set forth.

I hardly think anyone would appreciate it, but IMO you've got enough
experience to "tell it like it is", regardless of whether those involved
like it or not.
The fact those involved can post a riposte is an unfortunate side effect of
the medium, but, again: IMO, that shouldn't bother you if you take it upon
yourself to check the incidents. I'm sure the silent majority (how many on
the RASCAR roster to date?) take note of you pointing out the "correct"
response to situations.

pretty quick. One doesn't have to be friends to be able to race eachother.
If people don't like the way things are run around here, I think it's them
who should walk out, not those who volunteer their time to put this show on
the road.

Depends on your definition. Sure the league of Nations is a group with
common interests. However, in sport leagues involves organised
competitions with points, limited roster, rules, organising bodies,
defined schedules (with a start and finish) and champions at the end of
the defined period.
Rascar is an informal group of people racing together more akin to a
club than a league.

I'd echo that ZZ.
We can vouch for John's capability at running leagues. No question of
shying away from the commitment or politics suggested elsewhere in this

Same here John. I have chosen to stay quiet on the RASCAR incidents, a couple I
caused and a couple I've been on the receiving end. Hell it's just racing.
Sorry I missed Vegas so I could see the race for myself but one of the
attractions of RASCAR is "race convenience".
Dan
Beyond all the moaning about the Vegas race it was really a good one for
RASCAR. After what we've been through to this point in RASCAR I'd say just
stick it out a bit longer cause things are getting better not worse. Online
racing breeds contempt by its own competitive nature, we must control it and
have fun.

Again. This idea is coming from someone who is mostly a lurker here, and has
only made 2 RASCAR races. So I understand if this idea is just shrugged off.
Instead of one person being responsible for pointing out errors in driving,
which is vital to better racing I feel, why don't we have a competition
board. Only people who don't make the race are part of the board for that
week. Get at least three people. They all watch a replay, hopefully from
more than one source, and they post their comments.
I know this would be alot of work, but we do seem to have alot of people who
can't make the races regularly, so this would be another way for them to get
involved. And by not being in the race they are commenting on, there is a
minimized amount of favoritism that could be called.
I know I can't make every race, but I would more than gladly make some time
to review replays and highlight what I thought were examples of bad driving.
And with at least three people making that judgement call, we should get a
fairly good idea of what is bad driving and what is just a racing incident.

discussing _situations_ that came up, not necessarily the precise people
involved. The results are the same (it gets discussed), and it doesn't
create targets.
I also feel the more light-hearted these discussions are i.e. "Boy, was a
friggen idiot today, or what!" the better.
People screw up. There's also a reason why WE aren't the one's being
watched on TV every Sunday :) I think it's possible to discuss possible
area's of mis-understanding i.e. What should someone do in xxx situation.
"There was an incident today because of this, and I want to see if I should
have done this instead of that".
We have to stop painting targets on each other at all costs.
I'm pleased at how little of this I have seen in RASCAR, and I'd like to see
it stay that way.
I'll take leaving the track as a respected friend over a winner any day, if
I only have one choice.

On the contrary IGPS always had a big range of ability. In fact IGPS/1
was so early after the release of GPL that many were in that raw
learning phase so that there were huge disparities in lap times, yet
there seemed to be mini battles going on down the field.
The odd thing was there were remarkably few incidents even when the
faster drivers lapped the learners. Maybe on-line racing was so new to
most of us that an extra degree of respect existed - who knows.

In IGPS/1, you, me and Graeme seemed to own the top three spots on the
grid. I remember the very first race (Mexico) when Graeme was leading
by quite a hefty margin of between 20 and 30 seconds when he disco'd on
the last turn of the lap. I ended up winning because of it, and felt
real bad about Graeme disco'ing after he held the lead for the whole
race. When I'm done readin ras, I think I'm gonna go watch a few of the
old IGPS races.

Anyone ever find out what she's been up to? I noticed she's in GPL

Lead the whole race???? I Was first into T1 Mr Simmons!
Just last out of it beached on a pesky tyre and a black flag and pit
stop for the pleasure <G>
Not the perfect start to my first league race (wasn't repeated so I
guess I learnt something)
The fight back to second either shows how varied the field was or what
an incredibly quick driver I am (delete as appropriate)

Hehe, i thought we all done that in another thread.
I know this is Rascar we are talking about, but i dont think RAS is the best
place to examine root causes etc etc simply because it is so public. I
normaly make the effort to apologise for any incident i feel the slightest
bit responsible for, and sometimes for incidents where i think i am
completely blameless, and i think most of us do that. I also think most of
us review the replay of the race and look at our incidents from different
view points to get the bigger picture on what really happened, and learn
what we can from that second viewing. I think you are a bit brash and dare i
say rude at times, which i'm sure wards off most who would dare to challenge
you, and for those reasons i dont think you are the best person to conduct a
recap of the races ( if indeed a recap is neccessary )

Thats a shame, and again i dont think that is neccessary, i would like to
think that whatever our disagreements we can still enjoy a race together,
after all, there is much more to rascar than just me and you.
Or were you talking about the recap, in which case i applaud your decision

The way I recall, as long as none of us wrecked or got booted, Graeme
and you were often 1st or 2nd, and I was third at the end.

I Was first into T1 Mr Simmons! You are such a dick, can't say I'd want to race with you either.
Only for target practise anyway.

Maybe we should start discussing the races there. It's not quite as open a
forum as RAS.

My take as a bigtime lurker and veteran of, oh, TWO RASCAR races...
John: I think you've given everyone a lesson in how to cut off your nose to
spite your face. You appear to have gotten too emotional and now you're
gonna look a bit silly IF you decide that you miss the RAS races and want to
be part of it again. It's not possible to be impartial when giving an
overview of incidents you were involved in. You can call it how you see it,
but the fact is you know what your thought processes were as you attempted a
failed manoeuvre and they could be completely rational, but to others who
don't have that insight it may look like a stupid move. Pass judgement all
you will on other incidents, but leave those that you were involved in to a
third party.
FWIW - I think you've been extremely valuable in RASCAR and it's a shame to
see you go. I often agreed with your opinionated blatherings ;-) but this
(the caution recap and the subsequent quitting) was ill advised.
Caution recap by someone who didn't race would be ideal, though. But who
the hell wants that job?
BowtNetterToDo: If you think that John has some sort of personal grudge,
then you either think too highly of yourself or too little of John. Seeing
the amount of work he puts in to this sim racing thing FOR OTHER'S BENEFIT
along with the fact that he will, no doubt, have a life, I think it's
incredibly rude of you to think that he has decided to go out of his way
looking to cause you grief. To put my Simmons hat on, I'm just calling it
as I see it. If you guys run at similar speeds (and it seems you do) then
most likely, if you're gonna have a racing incident (and you WILL) it'll be
between yourselves. Simple, really. You really think John has
NowtBetterToDo?
Just my opinions for you all to ignore...

As an outsiders I would have to say that most of the problem was due not to
the recap but how it is worded. Using "stupid passing move" does not show
any respect to other drivers. Sure people make mistakes but calling someone
stupid is just asking for trouble. When you call someone stupid then expect
to get some feedback from them on it. Perhaps "aggressive", "risky" etc
would be a better choice of moves.
Maybe the recap was a "stupid reviewing move' ;)

Not sure I ever said that? But, I am also sure some "dink" will find it
with a Google's newsgroup search engine.
That being said, "welcome to the sim racing community." There's people here
that don't like you, never will, never did.......from the first day they
read something you posted......they'll pick on you forever. There's others
that don't like what you say, sometimes.....and tell you. They will also
tell you when they like (or agree with) something you say......but will only
"sometimes" tell you. There are also many that won't tell you
anything......they are "read only" visitors.......but you'll see them on the
sim track with you, just the same. There's a few that will cheer you when
you "kick some butt." But, they'll be "cry babies" when its theirs being
kicked. There's also many who will accept you as a human being (mistakes
and all).....embrace you and be fair with you........and like you because
you are "trying" to make this sim racing community a better place.
Isn't this just about the way it is in real life?
John, I'm not trying to tell you that giving up your self-appointed duties
with the RASCAR races on Saturday is something you shouldn't do. That's
your decision and yours alone to make.......and "f_ck" everyone else. Easy
jobs are hard to do....when they are not fun! The opposite is true also,
IMHO. I would ask you to consider your decision in light of "what's the
right thing to do for your continued support of sim racing.....and this sim
racing community?" Its an old clich, but it seems appropriate at the
moment, "If you don't want to be tackled......stop running with the ball!"
Regardless of your decision......and although I've never run in a RASCAR
event.....I appreciate what you've done and the support and leadership role
you've take in this sim racing community lately. I don't like everything
you've done....and a I don't like everything you've said. So what. I like
most of what you say and do.....and I respect you for trying to make this a
better place to sim race.
Thank you.
See you around....I hope?
Regards,
Tom Pabst
