Wreckers and reverse drivers on VROC GPL open servers

John Simmons complained of a chaotic VROC Monza race in Grand Prix Legends after a long break. A troll called redTed traded insults with Goy Larsen, and the thread digressed into Dr. Strangelove quotes. Later, m.seery and others discussed deliberate reverse drivers on VROC and whether to leave such races or stand firm.

I fired up VROC and ran a race at Monza today after a year and a half away from the sim. Of 16 cars that started, six were "the green car", four were the red car, and a mix of the rest (BRM was conspicuous by it's absence). Starting grid wreck, wrecks through first four turns, and topped off by 12 of the cars retiring 6 laps before the end of the 11-lap race. I started 11th and finished 4th. Nobody knows how to start, everybody appears to be surprised when they get to the 1st turn on lap 1 and there's still cars near them (at which point they lapse into an epileptic seizure and drive into the nearest of the other cars), and if it doens't look like they're gonna win, they quit. And this was an intermediate/short race! Unfortunately this seems representative of open server access of any form of on-line gaming. Be it team killers or cheaters in FPS games or wreckers in car racing sims. Most of the time the wreckers aren't as deliberate as the cheaters - it just turns out that way. Personally I find N2002 online a bit akin to the first GPL lap just repeated in terms of potential for a group get together. Of course you can get get lucky and chance on a good group via the open servers. Maybe I'll see ya later :-) Tony

Driving into the nearest car would take a damn sight more accuracy than the average epileptic person has during a fit. Actually, I got rear-ended on the grid because I had to slow to keep from hitting the car in front of me, and someone behind me wasn't as concerned about doing me the same favor. After that, I managed not to get hit by anyone, but advanced several positions as I passed wrecks in turns one through four. I didn't have any offs or spins either. Except for being pummeled at the grid, it was a fairly uneventful (and almost boring) race. -- ========================================================= DeMONS/1 for Nascar Racing 3 & Nascar Legends http://www.paddedwall.org/demons DeMONS/2 for Nascar Racing 4 and 2002 Season (in development) http://www.paddedwall.org/demons2 RASCAR Roster http://www.paddedwall.org/rascar Redneck Techno-Biker & "programming deity" http://www.paddedwall.org/john Barbarian Diecast Collector (460+ cars and counting) http://www.paddedwall.org/diecast If you want to send me email, go to the first URL shown above & click "Send Me Mail" in the contents frame. =========================================================

I can even cite an instance a few days ago at Spa where there were actually two idiots. M. Tremonti decided that it would be a good idea to wreck qualifying with his virtuoso display of reverse driving and donut technique, requiring that we all wait an inordinate time after qualifying finished until he exited his car. He then proceeded to take out half the grid before the flag. I personally had to stop at the end of lap 1 to serve a penalty because his rearending me caused GPL to say that I had jumped the start. Once he had had hs fun. M. Black took over and met me at a closing speed of close to 400 mph around the back of the circuit! I have the replay and it aint pretty. There have been several occasions recently where I have been in attendance and reverse drivers have been on track. They have mostly been too cowardly to use real names, preferring to call themselves "Z" or suchlike..... MS > > Malc. > >

Well I'm glad you didn't just start complaining about T1 crashes or stopped cars out on the track. I take a fairly robust attitute to this sort of thing & just deal with it. otoh doing laps in reverse & railriding really bug me, but in the last couple of months I've only seen one railrider and I recall someone who had finished the race driving back up the track while others were still on their last lap. The latter was probably just thoughtlessness rather than deliberate though. I tend to race late evening (sometime around 9pm to 1am) UK time. What about you? Malc.

If New Yorkers see planes being crashed into their buildings, why don't they just move away? Cave in to these idiots and they have won....... MS

If after paying to be in a qualifying session for something like 1/2 an hour - remember that some of us have to pay by the minute for dialup online time - some antisocial prat decides to try and wreck mine and others hard earned leisure expenditure, why the hell should we have to simply move along? It's against all my principles to be railroaded by inadequate morons MS

It's against all my principles to be railroaded by inadequatemorons Just try to be a bit less brittle. The vast majority of incidents are mistakes. The very few incidents that are deliberate usually seem to come from short-lived vindictiveness, and you can lessen the chances of that happening by being less brittle. Even at it's lowest, vroc is still surprisingly polite I find. Malc.

I can tolerate this as well as the next person. Hell, I make more than my fair share. > The very few incidents that are deliberate usually seem to come > from short-lived vindictiveness, I can name one guy. He uses the handle BIBOX and has been hanging around for about a month now. When not trying to wreck races he sits in chat, abusing everybody with his sewer mouth. > and you can lessen the chances of that > happening by being less brittle. That word brittle again. If I was to come across this guy in real life, he would be discovering how brittle a hard drive can be when it experiences a decellerative force of aroung 100 g > > Even at it's lowest, vroc is still surprisingly polite I find. I agree with you Malc. Most VROC members are great people. However, when somebody is doing their best to take out an entire field whilst firing abuse and verbal bombardments of the magnitude that would make the average rapper blush..... MS

If it's solely because you have to pay by the minute for internet access, then that's your choice, and I can't comment on it. Since mine includes unlimited access, I find it easier to simply find another race to join. Life's too short to deal with morons, y'know? Yeah don't you just wish you could type really sarcastic stuff & stay on the track?? Oh the opportunities I've missed... ;-) Look out for me on vroc & say hi. Malc.

No, I meant it's his choice to stay in a race with a wrecker... Did you actually follow the discussion, or did you just want to get in a dig at the U.S.? Sheesh... Eldred -- Homepage - http://www.umich.edu/~epickett My .sig file is in the shop for repairs... Remove SPAM-OFF to reply.
