Now where for Papy?

What Papyrus will do after NASCAR Racing 2002

Posters speculated about Papyrus's next project, with most expecting NASCAR Racing 2003 and many lamenting the lack of a new CART or open-wheel sim. Others noted that Sierra had cut Papyrus staff. The thread drifted into running IndyCar Racing II under Windows XP, real CART and IRL controversies, and whether the ideal racing line aid should be allowed online.

OK throwing the floodgates wide open now... Papy have had N2002 out the door now for quite awhile, and come up with a coupla patches... where are we going to hear what exactly they aim to be working on now? Surely work must have started on something even if they arn't too near a press release type situation. What is the something?! go aun... giz us a cloo :-)

How about a patch to turn OFF that damn "ideal racing line" during multiplayer events (you know, like the one where an admin can force the cockpit view). It might just turn some of those video game players into real sim racers. Mr. B "Lagwagon" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:aga6k8$dhs$[email hidden]...

I was unaware of this. If Papy are now stuck doing N(Year(Now)+1) because that is what brings in the moolay, then surely they could employee a few more people, to take the previous version of their engine, and convert it to a series such as open-wheel (insert here which formulae). I was always sure that I read Papy were developing an engine purely so "values could be plugged in" and wallah, any form of racing could be quickly created. i guess it didnt end up quite that versatile. i mean, if by the time N2003 comes along, or just before, papy release a Cart sim based on N2002 core engine, that would instantly become the best selling Cart/open wheel sim even tho technolgy wise it were just about to be superceded in N2003. heck I mean some people still enjoy ICR2, had an ICR3 come out after N3... loads more would still be playing ICR3? get me driftin' ? c'mon papy, if it aint cost effective or whatever, just be nice to know why and what your plans are of late. cheers. I watched both the Cart and IRL races yesterday. I thought the CART race was more interesting, to a certain degree, mainly because there was no way to tell what sort of foolishness was going to happen next. I thought that one dude was going to bean that rookie right on the head with his helmet :) Then, the Rookie who caused the wreck gets "Evicted" from the race for making a mistake? CART is a tough crowd. Oh, and let's not forget the "We'll modify the rules and punish someone, even after they asked about it just before the race" rule making. Overall, I found the IRL race more enjoyable. -Larry "Card" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

No FF, obviously and I did have some trouble getting sound from my "new" (i.e. bought after ICR2) PCI512 soundcard. Don't remember how I fixed that in the end. Revisiting the game brought home a couple of things to me. Firstly, what an amazing game it was for it's day. Secondly, how sofisticated the driving model is in what, nowadays, are deemed "less serious" similations compared to this nearly 6-year old effort. Thirdly, how much of an FF-junkie I've become. Difficult to imagine I once mastered ICR2, could run 100% races without making mistakes and catch slides. Now it just doesn't "talk to me" anymore because it's not talking through my arms. Going back to CPR with a faster computer and an FF wheel was an even bigger disappointment to me. We really need someone to pick up on this type of racing. Would the mid to late 90's CART heydays also be inaccessible due to licencing issues? Jan. =---

First, in the eye candy department, you went from 320x200x8bitx15Hz to 640x480x8bitx30Hz (for all machines). Rendition 3D users got amazing 16bit color with anti-aliasing and faster frame rate (in Turbo mode). Also, NASCAR 1 had a more sophisticated physics model (than ICR1), which was carried over to ICR2/CART. I was able to successfully drive ICR1 using just button inputs for throttle and brake. For N1, ICR2 and later, you had to have real analog throttle and brake input. So concludes our trip down memory lane... :) "But in a way, fear is a big part of racing, because if there was nothing to be frightened of, and no limit, any fool could get into a motor car and racing would not exist as a sport." -- Jim Clark

Icr1 used analogue braking, and heck even with NR2002 drivers are able to successfully drive with just button inputs for throttle and brake. Icr1 and every early Papyrus title (even include Indianapolis 500 : The Simulation) also shared a very common base game engine, all the way to Nascar Racing 3 and Nascar Legends. Load Icr2 in VGA, then load Icr1. You'll see that it's very much a similar title, but with some tweaks here and there. Like I wrote, the same gap as let's say GP3 and GP4. And yet it's the IRL that can take a clearly stated rule, and completely ignore it to alter the outcome of a race. The IRL rulebook used to state, until after the Indy 500 that is, that racing will continue UNTIL the Yellow flag/lights are displayed. Since the Team Kool Green owner proved, at great cost, that his driver Paul Tracey had indeed completed the pass BEFORE the yellow lights were on, The child of satan ignored his own rules and created a new interpretation AFTER THE FACT: Racing now ceases when they DECIDE to throw a yellow. So whatever happens on track between the time they say 'lets display a yellow, and however long it takes them to pickup the flag and wave it...is irrelevant. If I were a Canadien citizen, I might think of filing some sort of bias lawsuit. And Team Kool Green should pursue this further...if only to stick 'he who shall remane nameless' with a big legal bill. dave henrie

Bummer :( Hey! I just got an idea! If I rememer right, ICR2 ran pretty good on a 450MHz PIII machine. And I have that old GamePort version of the MSFFW. Maybe I'll take PartitionMagic and steal away 1GB from my Terminal Server machine, and install Win98 on it just for these old SIMS. -Larry "ymenard" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:pumW8.995$[email hidden]... > >"Larry (The Other Larry)" <[email hidden]> wrote > > Does Indy Car Racing 2 run under Windows XP ? > > > Mine runs, but since I use an USB joystick I can't drive it anymore. Oh damn - I hadn't heard that(proof of the pass). I thought the yellow came on before the pass was complete. Therefore Helio won. If that's NOT the case, then that was a screwed up decision. I wanted Helio to win, but Tracy should have been given the victory. Eldred -- Homepage - http://www.umich.edu/~epickett My .sig file is in the shop for repairs... Remove SPAM-OFF to reply.

I can only assume people want it off so they can get some edge at a new track for a few laps. It does nothing more than help a person run the best way around the track which is what you should want from everyone in a race. the better everyone can drive the better the race will be. Well when you consider the fact that real drivers can walk the track and many do on a new track I think it's a valid item. If you don't like it you can turn it off. I'm sure some think DW track talks are unfair too, we wouldn't want people learning the right way around a track now would we ;) "Peter Ford" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:gLfX8.482375$cQ3.40803@sccrnsc01...
