Can someone sum-up the WRL concept?

42 posts by 23 people · 14 Jul 2002 01:51 UTC - 17 Jul 2002 18:56 UTC

Summary request for the Racing Legends concept

Dave Henrie asked for a summary of Racing Legends' cost and content. The reported '1 unlicensed car, 1 unlicensed track, $150' sparked ridicule, while defenders stressed the included tools to build cars and tracks. Lee Ward and Mark Seery later said the one-car figure referred to the initial beta, citing the West FAQ.

Briefly, so I don't have to slog thru dozens of forums, and hundreds of RAS posts, can somebody give a summary of what WRL will cost, what it will contain, and what it's main focus will be? thanks. dave(lazy)henrie

Well, there are some good sim's on the market and a few in the pipeline that have great potential. 2 years ago that was not so much the case. The West's don't have as much of a ground breaking product (concept) these days. We've got: F1-2002 (with FIA GT Mod 4 on the horizon) NR2002 GPL Rally Trophy TOCA Race Driver (August) Colin McRae Rally 3 (September) There are more. These are just my (current and possibly future) preferences. As much as I have been excited about WSC/RL - I have to say I'm not too confident about RL's success. If the hardcore sim'ers all pitch in the $150 and things don't work out for the West's what then? Apparently they've been working on this title for a year and have no licensing yet. What makes us think that this will change when we put our money in their pockets? Don't get me wrong, I'd pay US$200+ for a finished product that lives up to the hype. At this point though I'm not ready to throw in US$150 to beta test 1 car and 1 track with no assurances that I'll ever see anything else... - David Cook

Bloody hell, how much will it cost to buy enough cars for a full grid and enough tracks for a season. The Wests obviously believe in the old saying ' There's a sucker born every minute'

"Tony" wrote... > <snip> > Bloody hell, how much will it cost to buy enough cars for > a full grid and enough tracks for a season. You can have a full grid of the same car, for one. Then there's also the matter of the tools for creating tracks and cars shipping with the game, which, no doubt (if it all materialises) will lead to home made versions appearing on the net. Obviously those would differ in quality, but that's no different from the current situation with GPL, Heat or EA's F1 series. So, hypothetically, there would be a choice between buying the official, licenced (read: authenticated) product or the free "gestimate". > The Wests obviously believe in the old saying ' There's a > sucker born every minute' Once again, why are people who say "Great idea, best of luck with that." or "what can I do to help?" suckers? Codemasters has yet to make even a good arcade racer. I would literally shit my pants if they produced a professional quality racing simulation on par with Papyrus or the latest incarnation of the ISI engine. The only racing simulations I'm aware of that are being released in the next 1-2 years are Nascar Racing 2003 and F1 2003. Lots of good games that I'm sure I'll buy and enjoy (Rallisport Challenge near the top of the list), but only 2 companies have produced games that attempt to do real physical modelling of a car at this point. I'm starting to leave the topic here, but it amazes me that Papyrus seems to get so little respect from their publisher. The last 2 iterations of their NASCAR series have outsold everything in Sierra's catalog other than Half-Life, and yet they've been rewarded with budget cuts and strict limitations on the types of games they can produce. All of this, and they're the first development team to do serious physical modelling of race car dynamics on a personal computer. I bet that if they were working for EA we would've had GPL2 a long time ago, not to mention other games developed using their engine. Jason

I'll have to say the same, my interest is now dying if that is the reality of the situation. All the tracks available in pics and various PR material from WSC, all the car pictures for the countdown, it's all useless, none of that is true. Nope. Looks to be the whole of it. I gotta say, I've paid very little attention to this whole West Brothers thing, and I gotta say I'm glad I didn't waste my time. This boondoggle shows that they are about as thickheaded as they come, and given that I doubt their ability to come up with a decent piece of code. Pfft. -Tim

Sounds fair Jan. Some questions if anyone feels like answering. As far as the "tools to build your own racing sim". Does that not sound like a major conflict of interest on their part? How will they sell anything else other then the core? Do you really think they will give you ALL of the tools thus elimating the need for the West Bros. at all? Strange, but having spoken to the West brothers on Friday, Saturday & Sunday at Goodwood several times about Racing Legends on the GPL stand, I can't remember them ever saying "1 non licensed car, 1 non licensed track, $150". As far as I could tell from reading that thread the figure you quote was an off the cuff reply to a question in which a hypothetical number of buyers (?5000?) was posited by the questioner. Given that number of buyers perhaps thats the price the Wests would need to sell it for to recover their costs and make it all worthwhile. However that was a number of buyers that the questioner put forward, not the Wests. The Wests merely answered a specific hypothetical question, they didn't put forward a business case. I wouldn't make too much of that guesstimate. David
I have some audio gear that is midi controllable. I also have some software that controls midi devices. This software is fairly simple in design, midi is really simple, but there is so much gear out there that the software company could never make control modules for every piece of gear. So they let us make our own modules. It goes like this: I pay 100 bucks for the core program and 1 module. I can buy more modules from anybody I like. If I buy your module from you I might pay 20 bucks and you get twenty. If I buy your module off the software's web site I might pay 21 bucks, but I know for a fact that it's good stuff. It's a great system. There might be 40 of us out here who love the DP4 and use it daily. Without the little guy making mods, we'd be out of luck. Big companies wouldn't waste their time. The software company is not loosing money in any way because they keep plugging away at the high demand stuff. -- "Boy! I am not at all interested in RL so you speculate on the vapor all you want. Just remember, Everything the West's have "claimed" thus far is "unsubstantiated". As far as "continue being part of the rumour mill or spreading the word of unsubstantiated claims", I have not done either, really the most "unsubstantiated claim" in all of this is the RL CONcept itself.
