RASCAR schedule and Eldred's break from hosting

Eldred asked whether RASCAR should follow the Winston Cup schedule or pause, revealing he was tired of the arguments and caution-filled races. Members thanked him, debated hosting bandwidth and rules enforcement, and offered alternative servers. John Simmons defended his blunt race recaps.

The upcoming weeks NASCAR schedule is: Pocono(2 races) Indy(1 race) Watkins Glen(2 races) Michigan(1 race) Bristol(2 races) We've run all the above races at least once as shown above. Our choices are: 1)Continue following the WC schedule anyway. 2)Take a break until Darlington(Sept 1). I'm NOT going to load the road conversions for N2k2, so don't ask... Comments? I'm leaning towards 2) right now. Eldred -- Homepage - http://www.umich.edu/~epickett My .sig file is in the shop for repairs... Remove SPAM-OFF to reply.
What about running "other" tracks? Just get out the "randomizer" and pick 3-4 tracks we havent run much on. "EldredP" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

I say follow the cup schedule. It makes it easy to determine what track without having to wait for someone to respond to a message here. -- ========================================================= Redneck Techno-Biker & "programming deity" http://www.paddedwall.org/john DeMONS/1 for Nascar Racing 3 & Nascar Legends http://www.paddedwall.org/demons DeMONS/2 for Nascar Racing 4 and 2002 Season (in development) http://www.paddedwall.org/demons2 RASCAR Roster http://www.paddedwall.org/rascar Barbarian Diecast Collector (490+ cars and counting) http://www.paddedwall.org/diecast If you want to send me email, go to the first URL shown above & click "Send Me Mail" in the contents frame. =========================================================
This would be my suggestion. Pocono (last time was with no-yellows, lets run it with yellows) Indy (Only ran once, but its a fun track) Martinsville (IF they have fixed the pace car bug) Kansas (We had server problems with the last Kansas race and some of us had to log off to allow the others to run) Bristol (Its always fun) Otherwise, just follow the schedule. I realize that having to setup the server EVERY week could start to become tedious, so if you need to throw in a break you should feel free to do so. I for one dont give a ratsa** if we follow the schedule or not.... I would much rather race on good tracks that to follow the Winston Cup thru think and thin. Having said that... I'll be leaving for Brazil on Friday and will be gone for 3 weeks.... so you guys race whatever you like :-) -- ed_

I agree, and if I had the bandwidth I'd happily host the dedicated server for a week so Eldred could take a break, but unfortunatly I am limited to 128 up, so I can't. And since its his server, if he feels like he needs a break... Brian Oster On Sun, 21 Jul 2002 23:57:28 GMT, "Larry" <[email hidden]> wrote:

I have 192 up, but until they increase the reliability of my Cable Modem connection, I can't risk hosting a race. Otherwise I'd be happy to. Is 192 up enough for a 20 car field ? Downstream is 1.5mbit so that should not be an issue. -Larry "Brian Oster" <bgoster@swbell**nosmap**.com> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

I believe you basically need a T1 connection to reliably host a server with the size of fields we are running in RASCAR. Were you racing when we did Kansas? We were running 2 races every Sat. and Eldreds server crashed after the first race. We tried to take over the RAS Open server and it worked great.... for about 12 people. As soon as we got around 14 or 15, everyones ping went though the roof. I believe he is running it on a cable modem. There are probably quite a few of us here with a decent extra PC sitting around that is capable of hosting a race, but probably very few of us have access to a T1 or greater connection (or are will to risk or jobs putting a server on our company's connection). Really wish I had the connection, because I would love to have a dedicated N2002 server, but can't quite sell my wife on the idea of a T1. Well, I sit right next ours at work, but I am pretty sure I know the answer before I ask. Of course I *was* the network admin at my last job but that company no longer exists... Just curious, but do you have to open any ports on the firewall for a dedicated server? Brian Oster

Thanks for the races on saturday Eldred. I appreciate you dedicating your time and equipment for this. As for the rest of you, here is what I think. Rules require enforcement. Enforcement requres time, money, and effort. No enforcement, rules are useless. Eldred is volunteer. Eldred has job too. Me not want Eldred to volunteer any more of his resources for this. Been reading the related posts here lately, & been wondering if I should commit my 2 cents worth, when grub comes along & does it for me. Nobody wants to be the cop, 'cept maybe JS, & I wouldn't want to give him the satisfaction, even tho he is probably the best candidate for the job... j/k John ;o) In a group representing different countries, cultures, backgrounds, etc (which is the *main* reason I like RASCAR), you will always get differing reactions & solutions to problems, even as to whether a problem really exists. Some want a more controlled, more disciplined environment; others want a free for all, "run what ya brung" experience. Me? I'm somewhere in between. Respect for each other, & a little give & take will do wonders, as has been apparent over the last few races. The Golden Rule seems to apply here rather well. Grub, your idea of "flaming the offenders" has merit, tho a few attempts have created some bad feelings here b4. Even with this warning, allow me to be the first to embrace this method: GRUB, GET A NEW MODEM!!!!!!!!!!! ;o) Brian

I don't WANT to do it, but since I've had experience doing it in three other leagues, and since nobody else wanted to step up (I figure waiting four months is more than long enough), I took on the job. > In a group representing different countries, cultures, backgrounds, etc (which > is the *main* reason I like RASCAR), you will always get differing reactions & > solutions to problems, even as to whether a problem really exists. This is a crock - international differences and varying cultures should be left in the garage area (or paddock for you euro guys). In IGPS, we had guys from half a dozen countries, and the only real problem we had was with an Italian guy who thought the rules applied to everyone but him. He was eventually ejected from the league. The real problem is that anyone can join our races, and not everybody has evidently read the current guidelines. > Some want a more controlled, more disciplined environment; others want a free > for all, "run what ya brung" experience. Me? I'm somewhere in between. I would be happy if we didn't need additional "rules", but people seem to forget the fact that they're racing online on a network that is highly unreliable and varies in quality from one minute to the next, and and they do really stupid shit on a seemingly never-ending basis. > Respect for each other, & a little give & take will do wonders, as has been > apparent over the last few races. The Golden Rule seems to apply here rather > well. Respect for the racing environment is more important. If we can't create value in our races by having clean races, we can't convince people to drive with their heads place somewhere other than their asses in order to retain their priviledge of racing with us. PRACTICE: Since we're running with fixed setups, it shouldn't be tough at all to show up with a fairly intimate knowledge of how the car works under various conditions. I race several races offline against the AI so that I can see what I have to do to pass on the inside, pass on the outside, as well as be passed on the inside or outside. I know how the car acts on new tires, and I know how the car acts on old tires. It's not that freakin hard to spend time to learn the setup and find out how to drive at a particular track, but I think that's one of our biggest problems. RESTARTS: Hanging back, jump starting, chatting, picking your nose - it all contributes to a BAD restart. It seems there's a certain number of people that simply cannot drive at the pace speed for any longer than maybe a second. The further back in the pack you get, the worse the yo- yo effect is. You speed up, and then brake suddenly and slow down - because the guy in front of you did. --------------- My whole point is that if we want the clean racing we're all after, we need to establish some rules for participation. We don't need to establish new and exciting rules for when it's okay to pass, - we need to establish rules that we can cite when we warn a driver that further misconduct will result in a temporary suspension (or permanent expulsion) from racing with RASCAR. Rules should establish fair play, not artificial passing rules.

Actually, I was kinda hoping you were going to do a review for Coke like you did a few weeks ago, I was kinda interested to hear what your take would be on my two incidents. I think that pointing out peoples mistakes here probably would be the best deterrent to bone-headed driving. If you do it, you are just gonna have to realize that, when called out, people are gonna argue their case and you will probably get flamed. By next week though all *should* be forgotten. Brian Oster

Your wish has come true. I finally got this ISDN beast up and running. Instead of getting pings in the 500-850 range, I've been getting around 110 on average tonight with a standard deviation of about 30. If it keeps working half this good, I will be on cloud nine. The only problem is that I can't blame my mistakes on my connection anymore....:(

John, in re-reading what I posted, I realized that I didn't make myself very clear. The j/k & grin were meant to apply to the "not give him the satisfaction" part. I *meant* the part about "best candidate for the job", & indeed support that idea (if you really want to open that potential can o' worms). Haven't given it a lot of thought, but it strikes me (going by the last time you tried to critique the race) that you may consider *not* critiquing yourself ('cept maybe an "I screwed up on lap xx, waddaya think?" kinda thing), otherwise you leave yourself open to criticisms (valid or not) that you are easier on yourself than on others. Just the possibility of a "conflict of interest" is enough for some to assume that there is one (ask some folks on Wall Street). Setting it up so that it is *understood* that you will avoid any criticisms of your own driving, & leaving that up to others *may* be workable. ISDN is GREAT for online racing (at least as a client - you won't be hosting much). It's plenty fast at 128kb/sec, and more importantly, ISDN is extremely stable and low-latency. Of course, that assumes that your ISP is worth a damn. -Larry "grubbat" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:0dk%8.859$[email hidden]...

I've never disagreed with pointing out others mistakes, as long as it doesn't turn into a 3-day flame-fest. I get tired of reading that shit. And I believe it requires a certain tactfullness. You know, there really are only two rules that are needed: 1. The Rules as applied by the SIM. 2. Respect for your fellow drivers. The rest doesn't matter, because the above two, if followed, take care of everything else except the true mistakes, which happen to EVERYONE. The only flaw is the 100 page document needed to define the word "Respect" :) -Larry "B.Farmer" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:lAq%8.250$[email hidden]...

Well, heres the deal. I live about 11 miles from the CO. After putting in the midspan repeater, it working great with great quality and better latency. My cost is approx 69.00 month for 200hours usage. It includes two phone lines and has call waiting , forwarding, call id, and all of the other basic stuff. Our other phone line was 44.00 a month for one phone and all of the goodies like caller id, forwarding, ect. The extra 25.00 a month is chicken feed when you look at what i had verses what i got now. If I had added another phone line, the cost would have been compariable. We do not use nowhere near 200hours per month so that part fits good. The upfront cost was 169.00 for the installation (which was a steel considering the time they put in), and the Zyxel usb Isdn external TA modem. I canceled my regular phone service and haven't regretted it yet. The modem in pluged into the UPS and so my service should be up even though we might have power failure. In my neck of the woods, the phone company never suggested ISDN as an option to DSL. It was almost like they had to install it once I requested it. I thought that I was going to be forever banished to high latency and bad quality for living in the sticks but have since found out that there is hope for those who have poor regular phone service and live within 60,000 feet of their CO. grub "Larry" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:rKx%8.126851$%%[email hidden]...

Actually, I believe that quality is better than ping times (latency). If you have poor quality it means that packets are constantly having to be re-sent. Brian Oster
The point I was trying to make was that no matter how hard you try not to, you're gonna piss someone off. The way I got it gigured is that if I try to piss off EVERYONE, then nobody will feel like they've been singled out. :) In article <o4H%8.28451$[email hidden]>, [email hidden] says...
