At 1am est, on The Learning Channel, a show called "Countdown to Danger"
is being re-run.
Two parts, with the first part being about Senna's crash.
Worth a watch, just watched it myself.

What did they say about Senna's crash?

Basically that due to the VERY low ride height they used to runto achieve higher downforce, and
considering his tires were cold due to the restart (bad accident on first start) and them using the
safety car for one of the first times ever, his car bottomed out losing all downforce and it
wouldn't turn, he was braking hard as he left the track headed toward the wall. He probably would
have lived had the tire/wheel assembly not come off and hit him in the head. It is what prompted
them to redesign all the tracks and add chicanes according to the story. Probably alot of car
design changes as well.

And according to telemetry, the famous steering assembly didn't break
until impact.
Well done piece, whether one agrees with it or not.

Curses, I missed it. Can anyone video capture it?
How can you dispute it unless you were there and involved in the investigation? Sometimes I don't
understand any of the statements some of you make? Is it like new math, because the logic behind so
many of these statements is utter garbage?

Take a pill Biz; I didn't say I was disputing it, but as controversial as

I would recommend Prof Sid Watkin's Book "Life at the Limit" for the
history of safety in F1. There are a few key moments highlighted in there.
cheers
John
Chicanes were being implemented before 1994, mostly due to common
sense but partly to Jackie Stewart whining like a baby and organizing
boycotts of Spa and such. He personally approved the changes made to
the Nordschleife in the early 70's to plane off a lot of the jumps and
add more armco everwhere.
In 1994, after Senna's crash, Mosley was suddenly being asked some
very poignant questions about the legality of F1 by the governments of
several countries (since the death of a superstar always re-ignites
the "racing is bloodsport" debates...same thing happened with Moore
and Earnhardt). His immediate reaction was to start putting
ridiculous chicanes in every track, including Tamburello where Senna's
crash occurred and...one at Eau Rouge, the most disgusting and
laughable chicane since the ones that emasculated Curva Grande and
Vialone (both of which IIRC predated 94).
In the long run, Stewart has had more of an impact IMO on getting the
cars and tracks to an acceptable level of safety, since most of the
innovations were in place before 94 (chicanes to castrate interesting,
er, I mean dangerous corners, carbon fiber cars, etc) Senna's death
prompted overreaction for political reasons and primarily led to most
of Stewart's ideas being used in ridiculous ways (hey, let's put
chicanes everywhere!). IMHO Hakkinen's near-disasterous crash at Spa
which led to the development of the head and neck restraint system had
a more important affect on safety in F1 and motorsport in general.
Of course, there's also Professor Sid who has brought most of the
actual *good* ideas on safety to the table, rather than "let's turn
the sport into expensive go kart racing".
