Sim racer becomes an IRL fan after Nashville race

Don Burnette described enjoying his first live IRL race at Nashville and wishing for a CART or IRL sim. Others shared live open-wheel experiences, while critics complained about cautions and some traded F1 and NASCAR jabs.

Now I really want to see a Cart or IRL racing sim!! My niece and I went to the IRL race at Nashville Superspeedway last saturday night. I must admit, it was a real blast and I enjoyed it immensely. It was a great race, and those darn open wheelers were aboslutely flying around that 1.33 mile speedway. The top qualifiers were in the 203 mph average speed range. It was incredible watching them , then after the race they opened the garage area, and my niece and I got to go into it, look at some cars up close, and talk to some of the pit crews. We stayed in there till they ran us out. I came so close to coming back on Sunday to do the drive training thing, 6 laps for 300 bucks - my only saving grace from me doing that was it was threatening rain that day, so I backed out of doing it. I know it would have been quite an experience, and if they do it again when they come back next year I think I will have to have a little nest egg put away for it. I have always been a die-hard Nascar fan, but I must say I am now very much interested in these open wheelers. Don Burnette

Yep... The IRL, the best kept secret in motorsports! Glad you enjoyed it, now you'll have to make the 6 hour drive up to Indianapolis for the 500 next year! I went to the Richmond race Don. It was my first Indy car race, and I was impressed as well. I have always wanted to see one, and still would like to see them at a place where they can really open them up. The pre-race festivities were pretty cool, and the price was cheap! ($30). I've been an open wheel fan since watching Ayrton Senna in the late eighties-early nineties. -- Tim Doyle TDRacin Online TeamECR Sim MotorSports www.TeamECR.com VRW Team Owner www.VirtualRacingWorld.com "Don Burnette" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:JCx09.306958$[email hidden]... > Now I really want to see a Cart or IRL racing sim!! > > My niece and I went to the IRL race at Nashville Superspeedway last saturday > night. I have watched all the IRL races this season on TV here in England and enjoyed them all. As an aside, I have never understood why people are fans of one form of motorsport over another. I was wondering why you watched NASCAR racing without taking an interest in the IRL? As far as I'm concerned I watch almost all forms of motorsport (except tractor pulling and monster trucks). Take today for example. I will watch the F1 race then the IRL race and the CART race. If the IRL race hadn't clashed with them I would have also watched the highlights of last week's NASCAR race (the earliest we get to see them). If there's a MotoGP race on I would watch that too. Basically I can't get enough motorsport :) Phil --- Race Sim Central Administrator http://www.racesimcentral.com

The IRL has some good racing I'll admit. When there's green flag action. The problem is half the race is run under caution. Medaka wrote:

My main interest is in NASCAR, but when ever I go to see the Truck Series, I also get a ticket for the IRL event. I don't follow the IRL like I do NASCAR, but seeing an event live is very exciting and any NASCAR fan that just dismisses it is really missing out. Brian Oster
Huh, my experience has been just the opposite. In the 2 IRL events that I have been too at TMS, there have been very few cautions. Brian Oster On Sun, 28 Jul 2002 16:45:30 GMT, Brad Larocque <[email hidden]> wrote:

I think that is because Texas is a really easy track to drive. At Michigan, there were a ton of cautions, and most of the drivers were basically out of control. I like the IRL races, but will never pay to see one. "Brian Oster" <bgoster@swbell**nosmap**.com> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

If you never have payed to see one, I would highly recommend it. Kind of like Nascar, you really don't appreciate the full intensity of the racing, and the speeds those cars are really turning , till you see them live. I will be definitely making the yearly IRL visit in Nashville a regular routine. I always make it a point to get to the fence at whatever race I'm at to fully experience the speed of the cars going by. At the Indy 500 this year I was slightly under the influence of alcohol when I finally made the trek to the fence but it was worth it - those cars FLY! I was at the entrance to turn one so I suppose they were doing close to 230mph or maybe even faster. I was so blown away I turned around and pumped my fists in the air in excitement looking for my friend many rows up. After about 15 seconds of that I realized that a lot of people in the first 10 or 15 rows were taking part in my excitement pumping their fists as well :) I was a little embarrassed but what the heck - we were all having a GREAT time! I'm definitely going again next year. - David Cook

Yeah, it is usually much easier to appreciate racing live, particularly at oval tracks where you can see most of the track. It was sad though at Nazareth. When the Busch series is there... you know it by the events going on around the area, the traffic, etc. When the IRL was there, you hardly knew there was a race going on. I'm not a big open wheel fan myself to begin with. Throw in Tony George and ovals only and to me it's on par with the demolition derby at the fairgrounds in terms of validity. ;) -- Scott B. Husted Geez Scott, why do you have to INSULT demo derbys so??? lol dave henrie
Hey there is nothing better than a Tractor pull and derby combo! Way more exciting than F1. There is one similarity between a derby and F1. You can tell how good its gonna be by the first big wreck. :) MadDAWG

I detest Tony George and prefer road racing to ovals, but you don't have to *lie* about the IR race. The Michigan race had 5 cautions for 25 laps (out of a 200 lap race). Only two cautions were for crashes (Ward and Cheever [giggle]). Something like 20 of 25 cars were running at the end of the race. The last 25 laps were some of the best racing we've seen lately. Of course, that sort of "good racing" means taking big chances in close quarters, like the last 20 laps of a NASCAR restrictor plate race. :| I had the feeling that Sarah hasn't quite developed the situational awareness for this, but she didn't cause any trouble. It's a hallmark of the sort of entertainment-engineered spec-racing we see in America these days. It's exciting, but it has two downsides: 1) the potential for large-scale disaster with long-duration "pack racing" (NASCAR regularly has this now at its restrictor plate races [aka "the big one"], but participant injuries are usually kept to a managable level and they've been lucky with no spectator injuries), 2) the artificial closeness of the racing leads to unreasonable expectations and boredom with "real racing" (racing with less spec- & racing action-management, such as F1 or even CART) -- a bit like raising a kid on a steady diet of MTV and cartoons and then expecting him to be able to sit quietly and watch PBS. :) When you think about some of the innovation seen at the Speedway in the '60s, it really makes you sick looking at the IRL-series-approved- (but-maybe-not-if-you-build-a-CART-chassis) sort of politcal "stuff" going on today. Open wheel suffers, Tony fiddles... :( Ah well, enough ranting for today... "But in a way, fear is a big part of racing, because if there was nothing to be frightened of, and no limit, any fool could get into a motor car and racing would not exist as a sport." -- Jim Clark
