IRL: Eddie Cheever is not pleased that Thomas Scheckter has crashed six cars -
five in races - this year.
"This is not a video game. Every time he wrecks we can't just put in a new
cartridge and start over. These incidents have decimated our company."
I thought that comment was interesting...

Eddie Cheever criticises Tomas Scheckter over crashes
David L. Cook quoted Eddie Cheever complaining that Tomas Scheckter had crashed six cars. Many sided with Scheckter, who then won a thrilling IRL race at Michigan, and debated whether Cheever should coach rather than threaten him. The thread also covered Tony George and the CART/IRL split and Sarah Fisher's run.

Automated summary.
Especially considering that Cheever himself is the cause of at least one of
those.

AWESOME finish! Cheever needs to set down next week and race Rice and Sheckter.
Man I thought Sarah might get it for a bit :)

Maybe Cheever needs to spend more time working on getting Tomas to finish
races instead of bitching at the guy. The kid has lead like 400+ laps this
year. Eddie has not lead that many laps, but he is telling this kid to cool
it. Eddie is an idiot.

Me too. She was a little unlucky to have to get out of the throttle at one
point which dropped her back down the field. Those last 30 laps were
absolutely fantastic. The racing was close and aggressive. I really thought
there was going to be a crash behind Sarah at one point leaving her to take
the win.
Congrats to Tomas Scheckter on his first win and of course to Buddy Rice in
hos first IRL race on taking 2nd spot with a superb last corner pass.

A lot of people tend to bash the IRL on this newsgroup, but you can't deny
the racing is absolutely awesome, week after week!
Great race, congratulations Tomas!!!
I agree, Eddie should hang up his helmet (except maybe for a run at Indy
next year) and let those two rookies have at it!

Yes, his son.
Especially since he crashed out today :)
I'll say this. The last 30 laps of that IRL race were some of the most
exciting I've seen ALL YEAR!
The racing schedules stunk today. The dual-feed UltimateTV was getting a
workout today :)
Never could fit in the CART race, but I think it's being replayed tonight.

Yep, his son, he almost destroyed his career by going up to a cop pretending

Most of us that have "issues" with the IRL have nothing to do with the
drivers and cars, it has EVERYTHING to do with that asshole Tony George that
runs it all. His greed and desire for power and control are what caused the
CART/IRL split in the first place.

I got in parts of ASA,NHRA,IRL, and NASCAR Sunday. The one good thing about
the NASCAR delays allowed me to catch some of the other races, and then they
cut it short so it was done in time fir the drags.

At the Indy 500 banquet this year I was sitting behind Josie George (Tony's
sister). Apparently she doesn't like her brother too much either. During
Tony's little speach she had her back to him - and was mocking every word he
said while reading the teleprompter. Pretty funny.
She's the one who hooked me and my buddy up with an excellent Indy 500 package
after a chance meeting at LA International Airport :)

Hear, hear.
Still, those cars were sooooooo far from running on the edge of adhesion that
Sarah was even able to stay on the lead lap. That's another issue. Where their
races run on "handling" type tracks (Nazareth, Phoenix) the races tend to be
much less spectacular, and much more of a crashfest.
That said, I still switched from the CART Vancouver race to watch the last
20-odd laps of the IRL race... Good for Tomas and Buddy
Warlock!

Amen to that. TG's antics at Indy are the reason I only bought tickets

My point is you got a guy who can lead races and stand on the gas. You
teach him, don't bitch at him. Tomas right now is going out and trying to
win laps not races, and someone needs to teach him how to win races.
Bitching at him and threatening him with his job is not going to help him
win races. Overall Eddie has not handled the situation decently at all.

To my eyes it looked like she more or less the best car in the last 20 laps.
She was consistently running the lowest line of any driver. What cost her a
shot towards the end was having to lift off slightly once to avoid hitting
someone else, I think Sam Hornish.

Yes Tony wanted as much say as a franchise holder( at the time a owner) of
CART. He had no owership in CART he was a track owner. He got upset that he
did not get that so he formed his own league. Then pulled the 25/8 rule so
his newly formed league would not get its ass stomped by CART teams in its
first year where they ran the same equipment. He has driven TV ratings
consistantly down since the split for his race. He does not release
attendance figures, but the people are staying away in droves from
everything but race day. And Race day attendance cannot be confirmed to be
what it was in the Pre IRL days. This years ratings was the worst, even
after a bump when the CART teams started showing back up two years ago.
Additionally the oval only aspect of the league just leaves me out. Finally
some of the aspects of the IRL that were embraced, American Drivers, Parity
on Engines since you can own them, and affordable racing is going out the
window. Toyota and Honda will have factory support for only their blessed
teams and they will raise the bar to a point where if you are not running
the favored powerplant you will not be in the hunt.
Michigans race had a great last 30 laps. To get there we saw great driving
from Tomas who was dominating the race. other then that is was daft passes
for second and back. Too bad Infiniti will not be back next year. They
realize the dollars needed to spent keeping up with Honda and Toyota Factory
teams will just cost too much.

The last 30 laps of that Michigan race yesterday were some of the most
nail-biting racing I've ever seen in my life.

The kid is fast no doubt about it, but yelling at him and threatening him
with loosing his ride is not going to teach patience, its just going to get
you a pissed off driver. Cheever needs to figure that one out. Kinda like
AJ. Loved seeing him destroy part of one of his cars yesturday.

Can I get a HELL-YES on that?
I refuse to watch IRL races on TV, mostly because I'm so sick of all the
sponser name dropping the announcers do. The other networks are bad, but
ABC is the worst! Case in point, I believe it was at the Nazareth race
earlier this year, and it started to rain. ABC sent one of their
trackside announcers to the "Marlboro Team Penske" pit to talk to Mr.
Penske. The announcer opened his spot by noting that "Roger Penske is
wearing his Hugo Boss Raingear", or words to that effect. There was a
reference made to Hugo Boss, that I remember. WTF is that all about?
Bottom line...I do like to watch the close racing in IRL, but you know
what? I'm sick of ovals! NASCAR already has that covered. I want to see
those cars on street courses and road courses also. Oh wait, CART still
does that!
I love CART, to me the best open wheel racing series in existance. I
don't have Speed Channel, so I don't get to see all the races, but the
ones that are televised on CBS, I watch. I hope CART survives this and
comes out on top, but I think both CART and IRL are destined for
failure. Like I said, NASCAR already has the oval racing thing covered.
What made the old pre-IRL/CART split special, was the mix of tracks...
IMHO. Oh, my interest in either form of openwheel racing has NOTHING to
do with driver nationality. (Go Paul Tracy!!!)
I'm jumping off my soapbox now. Thanks for listening.

When I watched Indy Lights from the grandstands at Fontana two years
ago, the whole pack was together, three and four wide swapping places
all the time. Cars out of horsepower with still a lot of downforce to
go tend to do that...

You don't need alot of HP to have a good race. Take F1 for example. They
have alot of HP but there isn't much racing after the first corner.

Really? When do you get three and four wide at 180mph plus on a road/street
course with out having cars being carried away on flat beds? Ovals are
popular because they are exciting to watch. While as a sim racer I can
appreciate what it takes to run a god road race, but that still doesn't make
them any less boring to watch.

Whilst I agree that bame dropping of sponsors is not ideal at the moment we
have to face facts. Companies do not have vast amounts of money to throw at
motor racing at the moment. Those that are supporting the sport through
sponsorship in these difficult economic times deserve to get value for their
money. I think we have to be a bit more tolerant of this for the moment and
hope that when things pick up the name dropping will reduce a bit.

The way they're going now, I think you're right. IRL talked about racing on
the cheap with All-American drivers, couldn't do it. CART was the class of
the continent in open-wheel, now it's an 18-car field.
They'll rejoin just before they die, so let's take the best ideas from both:
- cheap standard engines and chassis, let's make it a driver's race instead
of manufacturer's;
- half-and-half ovals and road courses to reward the complete driver (just
lose the street circuits where you can't pass);
then add two of my best ideas <g>:
- lose the aero, make them actually drive the car and slow for turns;
- run 43 car fields (except at Indy;-)
Jumping in the middle of the thread here.
I was luky enough to score some pavillion passes to the race on Sunday.
This allowed me full access to the garages and pit lane before the race. We
were standing around during driver introductions. While wating to be called
up TS was sitting on the ground by his self and occassionally talking to a
reporter. EC was laughing it up and having a good chat with BR while
waiting. You could feel the tension.
The Infiniti pro race was pretty good as well. Nobody has commented on
that. Jason Priestly of "90210" fame and sometimes lousy broacasting for
ABC started. Tuned him in on the scanner. He was very professional during
the race. He brushed the wall and had to come in for a tire change.
Something not normall done in that series. The crew botched the stop up big
time but JP remained calm throughout.
During the IRL race I was standing atop the terrace, the building behind the
pits. Standing next to me was Tony George and Mary Hulman George. She was
wearing an Ed Carpenter sprint car T-Shirt. Tony was wearing black pants
and a white business shirt. Somewhat overdressed for the heat and humidity.
Also met Eric Bishoff inside the terrace.

I was under the impression that TG started the IRL as a way of getting back
to American style open wheel racing. That being somewhat affordable and
oval only. His original premise was to give American drivers a better shot
at making it in the big leagues.
