Grand Prix 4 wheel axis problems spark sim-or-arcade debate

A user found GP4's menus misbehaved with split-axis pedals. Replies offered fixes, but the thread became a debate over whether GP4 is an arcade game, with Gerry Aitken saying no multiplayer meant no sim and Iain Mackenzie defending its merits. Jan Verschueren criticised GP4's limited force feedback, and Ronald Stoehr found its LAN multiplayer poor.

i think i got it to work but now the menus act up unless i hold down the gas pedal halfway? is this a joke?

GP is not a Sim, it's an arcade game so is far more suited to keyboard or joypad. If you want to use wheel get F1 2002 or GPL which both have the very best FF effects and car handling which for me equals fun. Some Call Me Tim
Have you actually used GP4? Although I'm a great fan of F1 2002 (and all of the EA series), GP4 has many merits as well - not least is the wheel FF despite the lack of kerb feedback. To describe it as an arcade game is quite frankly laughable. If you measure GP4 by other sims like GPL, F12k2 and N2002 it is truly awful. But if you measure it by the better arcade racers, it's crap too, imo. I did buy it, but only so I could try it for myself, return it and make a fuss about how crap it is. The guy in the shop is recommending F12k2 to people who are asking which is better, and of the people who have taken his advice, none returned F12k2 for gp4. But plenty have returned to change GP4 for f12k2. Gerry PS. Re: GP4, It's NOT GPL. :)

Sorry Gerry, but to judge whether software is a sim or arcade by whether there is multi player support is also laughable. Personally, I have no interest in multiplayer, but either way, that is completely irrelevant to the issue at hand. Each to his own though. RAS has always been too quick to criticise the GP series over the years. There are many other forums and opinions out there (HG for example) about the EA/Geoff C issue. > RAS has always been too quick to criticise the GP series over the years. GP3 and GP4 have both, quite rightly, been criticised for being little more than patches on GP2 - which in this modern day is NOT up to scratch. I mean - COME ON - where's the tyre temperatures in GP4 - so VITAL to setting up a car. Any sim that allows you - with a default setup - to run through eau rouge with a missing front wing and front right wheel can rightly be labelled a complete joke imho DOug
Well, I for one was a HUGE fan of GP2....and I got IMMENSELY disappointed by GP3 which was barely better than GP2 with all the patches, add-ons and other tweaks available on the net. The problem is that the other sims have improved a lot with 3D cars, realistic FF, Dual axis support and so on, and the GP series from GP3 on are always 1 step back, if GP4 would have come out 2 years ago it would have been a huge hit (that is to say before F12001 or F1RC) but right now it's just not up to par anymore, I believe that MICROPROSE was a real Sim company, and that HASBRO is NOT, and that makes a big difference, let us not forget that it took 3 tries for EA to make a really good sim with F12002 because F12000, CS and F12001 were really "perfectible" in many ways, and F12002 still is, especially this shitty controller deadzone issue which GPL from 1998 doesn't have... But as far as the end user is concerned right now the best things are F12002 overall, F1RC for the track accuracy, although the AI has been overly criticized in F1RC I still like to play it very much and then F12001-GP4 would be very close together... -- The first ever pinball ezboard !! http://pub7.ezboard.com/bpinball "Iain Mackenzie" <g> a crit dans le message de news: [email hidden]... > Sorry Gerry, but to judge whether software is a sim or arcade by whether > there is multi player support is also laughable. But take the 'sim' out of that statement and replace with 'arcade', and that best describes GP4. It's just a second rate arcade racer with f1 car shapes and tracks, imho. Gerry
I have both and like both. They both have their owns strengths and weaknesses. Things I don't like about F12002 is the low speed grip, the AI ability to take high speed corners much faster than you average driver (me) and the AI cutting corners. Generally the AI just doesn't seem as good as GP4. No doubt each year or so we get updates (patches) from both of these companies and get to pay full price for them. EA (ISI) as made much bigger improvements over the years but still carries over many things from the previous version that should be fixed or improved. GP 4 physics aren't up to where they should be at this stage of the game, controller setup still stinks. As for the on track racing, right now I'm enjoy GP 4 a bit more. It sure is nice to be able to save a full length race too. Fred, The way to fix this is simple. As far as I remember (I don't have the game installed any longer) you need to go into the edit menu portion of the screens. Once you go to there and return out the problem with the menus will be solved. That at least worked for me. I've only just noticed this, but it's a mere progressive centering spring with effects for bumps and knocks. I thought it had improved in GP3 2k (and, physics wise, my iniatial impression is that GP4 is GP3 2k with more grip), but it's a clever ruse. FF in GPx has no real relation to grip at any one corner at all, it's the visual and sound cues that make it seem that way. Check it out next time you play, I'm sure you'll see what I mean. Jan. =---

Hmm, it's very subtle, I agree, but I really believe (or imagine?) different grip levels and wheel resistance. At least if you lock up the front wheels there is no centering anymore (at least with the Momo). l8er ronny

True, it's "modulated" according to certain influences (locking wheel, rears spinning up), but you can't rely on it. Can't "feel" how hard you're pushing, gotta look and listen out for that. Very annoying now there's sound from the other cars in traffic. Jan. =---
Completely agree with everything you say! It's all about strengths and weaknesses, and not over-reaction to weaknesses which is what happens regularly on ras. Nice to hear from you again Frankie, and making another very valuable contribution. Didn't say anything about not being happy with ras, merely pointed out that on some occasions over the years - as you well know - the reactions to some software titles by some people are not particularly well thought through. This is a case in point, i.e the suggestion that GP4 (or anything else for that matter) is arcade because of the poor multiplayer implementation. You don't even have to say it 3 times - once is enough! Yet again it seems I have to make my position clear: 1) F1 2002 is a better sim than GP4 IMHO. 2) Both have their problems 3) Both have their merits 4) I don't care if you or anyone else thinks that GP4 or anything else is shit. That's your opinion, and I really couldn't care, it doesn't matter to me at all. In this case, I don't rate GP4 that highly, but to say it's shit and an arcade game because of poor multiplayer - that is what I respond to - stupid logic. No, it is evident of your displeasing of this newsgroup, pointing out the "other" places on the Internet where there is purposively an alternate universe where miraculously GP4 is praised as almighty God. But go back to your point, the suggestion that GP4 is an arcade game because of it's lack of serious multiplayer (or heck, plain multiplayer) is only *one* of the reason why Geoff's simulations are no more considered serious by the simracing community. Of course detractors exists, but with each title (GP3, GP2000 and GP4) they finally see the light and realise that Geoff's sims are only buffed up 15 years old F1GP's. -- -- Franois Mnard <ymenard> -- http://www.ymenard.8m.com/ -- This announcement is brought to you by the Shimago-Dominguez Corporation - helping America into the New World...

Well Eau Rouge is completely wrong in F1 2002, but the whole Spa track is I would say pretty well modeled in GP4. It's a good enough excuse to say that it is possible in F12002, considering the wrong and different elevation/radius/banking/track width ;-) -- -- Franois Mnard <ymenard> -- http://www.ymenard.8m.com/ -- This announcement is brought to you by the Shimago-Dominguez Corporation - helping America into the New World...

Bugger, i said it and you turned up...again! As for your idea of 'stupid logic', well correct me if i'm wrong, but didn't you say you had no interest in MP? That strikes me as stupid. Let me make my position clear. 1. A sim without MP is not a sim at all, imo. True because: 2. AI is no substitute for human drivers. and 3. Human drivers cannot be simulated. Hmm, I wonder... 'Go away' 'Go away' 'Go away'
I agree, it is better modelled in GP4, but the driveability of GP4 without a front wing is pretty silly. F1 2002 is much better in this respect but not perfect. Once I got my wheel setup to my liking GP4 is a lot of fun to drive, I can catch slides, (which a lot of people say can't be done) hit my lines in a realistic manner and have some good racing against the AI. I have never driven an F1 car so I don't know which is closer to right as far as physics go gp4 or f1 2002. Sure GC has made more compromise for playability's sake, but why is the low speed grip seem so low in f1 2002? They both have areas that should have been fixed by now. I much prefer the tracks in gp4 to f1 2002. The big difference for me was when I got the MSFF wheel working the way I wanted it to. I had to use some unusual settings, but now I feel as good of control as any racing game I've used. "Iain Mackenzie" <g> wrote in message news:3d45aafa$[email hidden]...

In one of my earlier posts I said I was an average driver at best. My point hick, was that GP 4 is very driveable and fun to race when I got it setup right. GP4 is a godsend for sufferers of SRSA (second-rate sim addiction). It has all the features they crave: 1. No MP. 2. It's second-rate. Gerry

But endless hours of suffering canned spins, and dumb AI backmarkers punting me off the track reduced the fun factor for me. That's when I decided to give GPL a try. Ok it may be horrendously difficult to master, but at least I feel I have more control over the car. -- Cpl Hicks
