Pocono lap-one crash and Rusty Wallace's role
Posters shared video of the Pocono crash involving Steve Park and Dale Earnhardt Jr. They debated whether Rusty Wallace caused it and failed to admit fault, while Tom Pabst defended Wallace as having made no avoidable error. Some suggested Park, after several bad crashes, should retire.

If Steve Park was a cat - I think he may have used up all 9 lives. He's even
starting to sound like a boxer who's been hit in the head too many times. I
think he needs to get out while the gettin's good...

seeing the pictures of the crash why don't they have gravel traps instead of
grass between the track and the fences ?

Better than grass, but pavement slows a car down more than
anything.
Wider pavement + tire walls + humpy bumper = no more fatalities.

In fact he said he "thought he was clear....and wasn't. It was one of those
racing accidents that happen because we can't see down to the detail of
inches....and I was short of clearing by inches. Pocono....is not a place
where your spotter helps you much....they are too far away from the cars to
do that." [paraphrased]
From what I saw in video replays......his description is accurate. That's
not a "fault" incident...just a racing judgment incident...and that can
happen to any driver at any time....IMHO.
In this case....I think Rusty needs to be given a break on having "caused"
that accident....

I have to agree with Lannie, I thought RW was doing his damndest to blame
Park for the accident. Whether it's called a racing judgement or fault, the
fact is that Park had position and the 2 went up into him. I was annoyed
because it was clearly Rusty's fault yet Rusty was trying to pass the blame.
-Tim
Simple fix, put regular side view mirrors on the cars, then they have no
spotter to blame.

FWIW, I concur. Though I'm not a big Rusty fan either, sounded to me
like during his inteview (even before he was able to view any replay
tapes) that he was open to the possibility of having not cleared the
One car.
It's just one of the hazards of the trade.

At the start of a WC race......running in the pack and all the distraction
of the field being bunched up......its like racing on the inside of a
washing machine....and the friggin' spin cycle comes on! There's no time to
look at a side mirror.....or the tach....or the overhead five-way mirror.
You don't take your eyes off the friggin' track and car(s) in front of
you...period! You also shouldn't change your lane......unless you are damn
sure you are clear. That was Rusty's fault....but hey, the cars drift and
not always is the driver in total control of what lane he is in....or stays
in....especially at the start with cold tires....and a cold driver.....and
the massive air turbulence of running two/three wide in a pack at a 150 mph!
I'd love to blame Rusty for that accident, because I flat don't like the guy
(I have my own personal reasons)......but I can't. I've looked at the
replay a hundred times....and in my own mind....it was a "racing
accident"....unfortunate.....but that's what it looks like to me. This is
my opinion, of course....but I'm only out to satisfy me.....not others.

"He's not good at admitting fault." Yep...you are right about that. But
he's not a total idiot, either. And, I don't think at the time of the TV
interview that he really knew "why" he was hit in the rear....just that he
was.
Damn....I hate defending this guy.......but I can't find him "guilty" of
shifting blame....not this time, at least.

On the other side, it can't be laid onto Steve either, he had the momentum
and outside position.
Blame Pocono for not having a spotter's stand anywhere but the front

OOTRD
> (one of them racin deals)
If was one of them racin deals but it definately was caused by the 2 car.
There is no question that all of those conditions helped to cause the
accident but even Rusty said in his post-crash interview that he is
responsible for where his car is and know where the other cars around him
are, not the spotter. Being the fact that it's Rusty's fault doesn't mean
he is a bad driver or even that it could have been avoided. The bottom line
is that the 1 car had position and the 2 car impeded on that position. Even
though the events may have been out of Rusty's control, (turbulence,
drifting, lack of vision, lack of spotter vision, etc) it is still his car
that caused the accident.
The original point was Rusty's attitude in his post-race interview that
another car caused the accident and that there was no concession of any
fault on his behalf.

He wasn't hit in the rear, not that I saw.
Unless it was AFTER he went up and chopped off Steve's nose.
Actually, what really got Steve's car turned left was after the contact with
Rusty, Steve was indeed hit in the rear by Craven. This was, of course, not
Craven's fault. He just happened to be the one behind Steve when the
initial hit with Rusty slowed him down.
That turned hin left into the path of Jr.
And the rest was a hell of a ride.
Rusty wasn't hit in the rear, he put his RR quarter where it didn't belong,
for whatever reason :)

However, it WAS Rusty that instigated the incident.
If I were simply to hear "I started that, sorry. Didn't mean to do it" then
I would be happy. But, it doesn't seem to be in him to say something like
that. He just can't say it!
I think now that he's had time to look it over, we may hear this from him
next weekend.
The incident was NO one's fault.

Good way of putting it. My only reason for
defending Rusty was not that his car didn't start the accident....of course
it did. It was that he didn't do anything reasonably avoidable, to start
the accident. Words like "blame" and "fault" usually mean that somebody
made an avoidable mistake, or a bad misjudgment.
I also heard Rusty specifically say, "I thought it was clear....and it
wasn't!" That's about as close as you are going to get Rusty Wallace to
admitting to having started the incident. I'm sure he is sorry that it
happened, he just doesn't say it.
Here's the kind of guy Rusty Wallace is (and this is only a small part of my
personal, one-to-one experience with him): The year we were in the NASCAR
Garage paddock area with our simulators for four days......letting the Cup
drivers test the three configs of the Chute we'd come up with - Rusty
refused to drive in the sim. He said it was stupid - very loudly! He also
laughed at me directly in my face....about my idea of paving the gravel
traps (see the string above about that whole topic). This is while he, Ward
Burton and myself were casually talking with one of the NASCAR officials, in
the sim tent. He looked at me with that "incredulous Rusty Wallace face"
that he does so well, and said, "Man, are you crazy or what?" The next
year, Rusty shows up at Sears....and all the drivers are praising the new
chute design and especially....THE PAVED GRAVEL TRAPS....(..lol...), and
Rusty acts at a press conference as if it was his friggin' idea the year
before, that we paved the gravel traps because it was his suggestion to do
it. That really T'd me off....big time! I have many more "Rusty Wallace"
stories.....but I will keep them to myself. They all get worse than this
one!
