Flame warRumour that Live for Speed is a secret Racing Legends test

Damien Smith reported a rumour that Live for Speed was an early test of Racing Legends. Douglas Ellison and others said it was false and that LFS was made by former Black and White developers. The thread became another redTed versus Ellison argument over Racing Legends' pricing and credibility.

There's already rumours circulating that 'Live For Speed' is actually a sneaky, early test of Racing Legends. What do you guys think? I think the thing that sparked this rumour is that the URL for the demo was first posted on the WRL forum. Also, a number of guys have been saying that a certain Chris West has been seen in the multiplayer lobby for Live For Speed (could be fake though) Hmm...... -- Damien Smith [email hidden] ICQ: 77028579
Rumours are rumours, this ones got not truth to it. The developers of LFS have responded to an email and said: "But to tell you some more about it now, here's a list of full version features. Several car categories. From simple tuned road cars to big ones, formula, karts, buggy and ofcorse a variety of tracks to go with that; cities, kart tracks, gp's, sand tracks, jamaican beach, etc. All with several configs for maximum variety. Weather effects and damage will be included. What else to say.. oh yeah, the release date is not known yet.. it'll be ready when it's ready. About the sound engine, it's a self made engine simulator. So far we can sort of simulate cylinder firings, valve clicks, simple pipe simulation, gear wind, wind etc. But it's all to be improved over time. It's very hard to simulate the sound of an engine perfectly. But like you say, the idea is there. And yes the full version will most likely allow as many multiplayer clients as you can cope with The bandwidth is variable, and I do not know the bandwith needed. It must be low as we have tested it with 56k modems and it worked fine (with not TOO much clients) We're not sure how we will market it. Maybe separate tracks/cars for sale or just the whole pack. That's why we have made this demo, so we can see what ppl want." There you go! It's an AWESOME little sim at the moment and will only get bigger and better. Thankyou for the info... Yes, after extended play, it's obvious that the rumours are a crock. The demo has only just been released and already the multiplayer lobby is brimming with drivers and everyone seems to be having a blast (despite the game crashing occasionally)

Word has it the actual demo for the release version will be free. A professional non-mass produced solution for "our" specific gaming need will cost relatively serious money, that is inescapable. At least two people will have to live off this piece of code and there's additional development costs to be funded. Even devided by an optimistic 10k customer base that still comes down to more than your average Doom3. I can't believe there's still people who fail to get their head around this. The supposed $50 would in effect be venture capital, no question. If you feel you can't take a chance on 50 lousy bucks then don't and wait for a free demo, a review or an opportunity to try it on a friend's PC. Otherwise, leave it... and I do mean that in the broadest sense of the word. Jan. =---

I believe I said I will not buy it if it costs anywhere in the region they are talking about, yes.. My interest is in racing sims, and this is supposedly going to be the all time, greatest racing simulation ever created. So there you have it.. See the connection ? Just because i may not be able to afford this luxury, doesn't mean i can't have any interest, does it ? It must be a real bitch that there are people who actually think differently to you. How do you cope with day to day tasks ?

Sorry Tim, but I don't get this idea of people assuming the Wests are in some way out to con the simracing community as, effectively, they'd be digging their own grave as sim developers. If the beta was a rip off, because of the way we're organised, they'd be lucky to get $500 before someone cried foul loud enough to be heard around the world. Jan. =---

Just the way they released all this pretty artowrk for WSC, and for two years there was nothing more than press releases hyping up this revolutionary sim that was going to be the end all be all of driving simulations. Then, they supposedly sell it off to corporate and that that engine isn't going to be used for an upcoming release by that company. Now they are going to start from scratch and develop the same type of sim with a different engine? That would be quite the achievement, especially given their track record of releasing absolutely nothing to date. And their supposed business model of releasing an Alpha beta copy for capital to , well, actually I don't know why since they didn't need any money for WSC. None of their excuses make any sense. To date they are all talk and no walk, yet people seem to believe the gospel of the West Brothers. lol really? I would love to hear you explain where something concrete has come from the WB. I don't care if you don't, but I also understand why. It really doesn't matter to me because there is enough good sims out right now that are way better than they were when I first started sim racing 13 years ago. They seem to be ambitious on jumping 10 years in time to release something now, but to date they haven't released anything but paper, or vaporware in internet terms. He can't explain a thing, because he knows sod all. He's just so wrapped up in this whole saga, he can't admit that he may be wrong. I can. So can others. It wouldn't hurt one bit to be wrong about RL, it still wouldn't change the fact that only the wealthier members of this community would be able to afford it. Or should I say, those with a healthier disposable income situation..At the moment, that rules me a out unfortunately.

I haven't a clue about the situation with Empire, but to me there were enough indications over time to concluded WSC has actually existed in some shape or form. That you didn't get to buy a copy, doesn't mean it was never. I developed a remote control unit with timer function for operating sun blinds... when push came to shove, the company who invested in the idea didn't want to take it into production, so you can't buy one (not this particular one, anyway). This doesn't mean there isn't a working prototype in my workshop (and I still have IPR on the software). > Now they are going to start from scratch and develop the same > type of sim with a different engine? That would be quite the > achievement, especially given their track record of releasing > absolutely nothing to date. Well, I assume the "difference" between the engines is of a legal technical nature, along with some stuff they "would have done differently if they'd started over". I think the Wests' back catalogue is listed somewhere in this group. They haven't done a racing sim before though. > And their supposed business model of releasing an Alpha beta > copy for capital to, well, actually I don't know why since they > didn't need any money for WSC. Funding from Empire Interactive? A loan? Sold some posessions? -Who knows and none of our business, IMO. Put it this way, suppose you put your efforts in something, self funding it all the way and in the end, through no fault of your own, there was no product, no return on your time/effort investment. Wouldn't you want to get payed as you went along next time around? As for the validity of a payed beta/demo, this is standard practise in CAD/CAE circles. > None of their excuses make any sense. Excuses? -What do they need to apologize for? > To date they are all talk and no walk, yet people seem to believe > the gospel of the West Brothers. I have my doubts. I'm just polite enough not to smear them across the net until they're substantiated. ANNOUNCEMENT / PRESS RELEASE My new 1970's historical sim ( rrevved's LeMans) will be released but ONLY -when it's ready-. It will feature 904's, 908's, 917's, 512's, P3's, P4's etc., etc. It will have the most fantastic physics modeling EVER developed. *Every* component of the suspension, etc., will be individually modeled and the accuracy of even the slightest loading and deflection will be tested, and certified by Penske, Ferrari S.A., Porsche, Matra and all other major 1970's era LeMans participants. BTW, I have a couple of -very- preliminary renders around here someplace. I'll post them later. Let's all discuss my upcoming sim. Your feedback is extremely important to my development process!! Maybe someone could set up a web forum .. :)
