I have been out of the Sim racing market for about 6 months due to the fact
that my PIII486 with 3dfxVoodoo3000 card is too slow for the hottest Sim 6-9
months ago which was Nascar 2000 by Papyrus !
I NASCAR 2000 the latest Racing Sim going ?
Would it be safe to upgrading to a 1.6 mHz system with a 128 mb Rage Video
card ??????

As always THANKS !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Returning racer's question turns into early racing game history
A user returning after six months asked about the latest Papyrus sim, and was pointed to NASCAR Racing 2002 and Live for Speed. Tom Pabst asked about the first racing game, and posters recalled Pole Position, Geoff Crammond's Revs, Pitstop II and other 1980s titles.

Hmm Tim there was never a Papyrus release that had a "2000" on it.
???? ;)
Anyway, the most recent simulation by Papyrus is "Nascar Racing 2002
Season", but it won't really be good on your PC, as it's way outdated (as
mine is, and it's a little faster).

As the official "Historian of All Things Racing Sim"......(and French

was it out....and does anyone have any "screen shots" from this title? I
would love to see this!

The first popular one was probably the arcade version of Pole Position.

I believe the first racing sim was Revs on the BBC Micro by a certain Mr G
Crammond, released in 1984. It simulated an F3 at Silverstone. There's a
screenshot of it at the bottom of this page:

Revs+ was also released on the C64/128 platform a little
later and was extremely addictive. Very immersive and
IMO better than GP3 or 4.

Not sure what video card that is, but it looks like a really old model.
Get a Radeon 8500 or the new 9700, you'll be much happier.

I don't know how it could be better - GP4 is still using the same
physics code isn't it?
;-)
Who Remembers Pitstop on the same platform ?
You had to fill up your own fuel in the Pits, if you forgot about the fuel
filling while you were changing your tyres, it would dump the lot on the
ground and you would have to start filling it again. :-)
Also the tyres would get a yellow stripe on them, then a white stripe and
then POOF !!!!
Your car would pull itself over to the curb, that was it , end of race, even
if you were 2 metres from the pits.
Very frustrating, yet very addictive game.
Broke an average of 1 Joystick per week playing it :-)

First one is true (I think you remember me archiving various PC racing games
of the 80's on my PC), but the second one is Scott Husted!! Don't confuse me
that posse :)
>......what was the first "racing game" ever mass marketed?
Others have said (and I personally agree) that "Pole Position" is the first
ever racing game mass marketed. Whatever it's a console, a PC or an arcade,
it's the same medium but transposed in a different situation. Anyway, Pole
Position 2 is actually much more known then the first one. Most of the
people here who do have memories of the game is from the sequel, not the
original one.
It's like everybody remembering playing Pac-Man, when in fact they all
mostly played Ms. Pac-Man!!! ;-D

And then there was "Ferrari Grand Prix" by Donald A. Hill, Jr., 1986,
for b&w Macs. The color version (16 colors; no, not 16-bit color) came
out in 1992. It included a track editor (no scenery, unless you count
white fences and green grass -- oh, yes, there was a horizon editor,
too), 8 cars, multiple viewing angles, replay and "head-to-head racing"
via serial. Wore out a mouse or two on that one. We've come a long way,
thank God!

8 minutes on a c64 tape deck.
Pitstop2 took 22 minutes and sometimes failed
to load. That (and some karate game) prompted
my first disk drive - a 1541 toaster complete
with disk melting element.
Pitstop 2 was my first chance to race multiplayer
(split screen) .. you could force other players
into mistakes (or curbs ;) and they would have to
change tyres earlier.
iksteh
The Sad thing is that I still have that Commodore 128, the Datasette, The
Game and the disk drive stashed in my attic.
Must be an antique by now:-)

Yeah, wasted a lot of time on that game. It had a good 2-player
split-screen game too (or was that in Pitstop 2?).

Did you ever get the Epyx "Fast Load" cartridge? The sumbitch actually
worked as advertised, sped up loading like 10x. I think it was
basically a RAM cache and some better firmware programming for the
1541.

What was the name of that other name which looked something like Pitstop II
but allowed you to design your own tracks? A friend of mine had it on his C=128
and he'd brake after a curve, so I'd crash into his car from behind and wreck my
car, then he'd accelerate again and race to the finish line alone...
The name had something to do with electricity, I believe...
