Flame warGTR2 demo announced, with Starforce dropped

A poster announced the GTR2 demo for the coming Friday, and attention immediately turned to copy protection. AutoSimSport reported that Starforce had been dropped from GTR2 in favour of SecuROM, with full release scheduled for 30 September. The thread then descended into abusive exchanges between Starforce critics and defenders.

I'm sure Starforce is used. Will there be multiplayer in the demo? Alanb

Some people claim that starforce has hosed their system. Others, riding on the waves of dissention only, refuse to use Starforce. These people say it is an invasion of one's privacy. Personally, I think it's a bunch of bunk. Some group started this backlash against Starforce and now everyone has to jump in and take a ride. Starforce has never hosed my system, and I can think of a lot of more serious invasions of privacy than some silly copy protection scheme. When the GTR2 Demo comes out tomorrow, please leave me enough bandwidth so that I can get the thing. :) Alanb

On a properly built and configured PC you wouldn't even notice starforce. Larry wrote:

Starforce installs completely un-necessary drivers at Ring-0 of the operating system. That alone is enough for me to pass. And I don't care who you are, THIS is downright scary... http://www.cdfreaks.com/news/13212 -Larry "Alan Bernardo" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

I say, that is scary. Almost like being in Beruit these days, with bombs threatening your very existence. Still, I don't always do what is right when it comes to software and haven't had any out-of-the-blue system reboots. I think a lot of this is simply nonsense, like how Norton wants everyone to think that viruses are as common as Pepsi Cola. Alanb

Could you post what is says as I am getting this error. "Sorry, an error occurred. If you are unsure on how to use a feature, or don't know why you got this error message, try looking through the help files for more information. The error returned was: You do not have permission to view this topic"
That would be Starforce screwing with your security settings, no doubt. Garrot wrote:

From Blackhole Motorsports: From AutoSimSport Wires: "Informed sources have revealed to AutoSimSport that Starforce has been dropped from GTR2 - both the demo version available today and the final release version scheduled September 30th. Sources reveal that 10Tacle have, instead, opted for securrom, which our source reveals as a "Sony solution". Whether anti Starforce or not, I think it good news that the sim racing community shouldn't be further fragmented by security software. Cheers Tony

Oh Sony ... the folks that installed a root kit without telling anyone on playing a music CD ... now I feel a lot better ... Interesting reading on the Sony rootkit topic http://www.sysinternals.com/blog/2005/10/sony-rootkits-and-digital-rights.html

It may have done so, and so do a lot of other things. I'd be willing to wager that it's more of a problem with individual computer configurations than it is with Starforce. But the problem has been over-blown, and most have just jumped on, for whatever reason. How many in a hundred do you think had a problem with Starforce? You'd probably have to go to a thousand before you'd start registering numbers. When people think their privacy is being compromised, it doesn't take long before thousands feel the same way, without those thousands even looking into what might be happening. Take my word for it, those who want to compromise the privacy of others do so in much more nefarious ways. Alanb
If a person is so paranoid as to avoid a game because of starforce then that person should NEVER connect to the INTERNET EVER! Securerom7 sucks worse than SF ever did. Like Ive said over and over to all the starforce activists. Thanks dumfucks! Mitch "Alan Bernardo" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

Many Starforce games have never been cracked to work without a cdrom, GTR being one of them. If I can't get a crack for a game to run without a cdrom then I don't wan't it. That should be a good enough reason for any of you Starforce pussies.

I was able to get GTR to run without the cd by using Starfuck. Willie
