The Sim Project ... looking for answers

The Sim Project is one of my favorite sites.  It's provided some great work
for SCGT, and now F1CS 2k.

Does anyone know why the site has been down for so long?  I heard they were
working on getting it back up sometime this week, but as of this evening the
site is still not up.  How can a site so popular be down so long?  What
caused it to go down in the first place without notice?

The hosting service they and the uspits and Alison's site were using got
hosed.  I believe the owners are trying to find another web hosting service.
their big problem is the HUGE amounts of daily downloads that those sites
generate.  It gets expensive for the web hosting company to keep the
bandwidth open for all us users.  This is about the 3rd time in the last
year that group of websites has had hosting problems.

or Sportplanet.com
or Gamespy
or ..
or ...

There is plenty of hosting services out there for sites that generate
traffic...

No offence but I think The Pits and Sim Projects "hay-days" are over and
they need "that much" bandwidth..  These days we got lots of other big sites
too so the traffic is distributed more than it used to..  I still remember
when I visited the US Pits once a day - for all my sim news and needs - now
I cannot recall the last time i was there - let alone the Sim Project
(probably due to the fact that I dont rac SCGT or F12K (or whatever :-))

Finding a new host cannt be that big a deal....

I think you under estimate the amount of traffic and downloads the Pits
still generated.  I won't speak for Jan though since I'm not paying the
bills for hosting anymore =)

Well I can help there.  The host 'disappeared'    ;)    There will be an
announcement 'soon'.

Trust me when I say Jan is as anxious as everyone to get things back up and
running.

And when Scott says disappeared, he means literally.....

Main site should be up and running with a new host some time next week
if Murphy stays out of our way for a little while.....

We're not going anywhere just yet :-), in the meantime, feel free to get
the files you need from www.thenorwaypits.com, site *should* be up to
date with all the stuff except "news" and "forums" which will not be
hosted there at all, but all of our files should be there

Beers and cheers

'No offence'?  So I'm not supposed to take offense over your newly found role as
internet *** site analyst?  Sorry, Ed, but had I said the same thing about GPLEA,
that would have started a whole NEW flaming war over at the GPL forums.

Obviously, you have grossly underestimated our traffic.  1.6 Gig of files, 1.5-2 G/day
bandwidth.  I challenge you to find a site willing to host that amount of files and bandwidth
that doesn't run into the hundreds of dollars per month.  (And if someone out there knows
of a site that can do this, PLEASE let me know).  Many hosting sites 'claim' unlimited
bandwidth.  Just go quote those specs at them...THEN see how 'unlimited' they are...

We don't plan on going to a *** network, our prior experience with them shows that
a site that wants to keep it's individual focus does not belong on a *** network.  Nor
does advertising pay for our bandwidth.  There is a very good article on this subject at
Avault...  http://www.racesimcentral.net/; Internet advertising
(at the moment) is nothing...the day of the dot.coms closed that door for quite awhile.

We have several other options, all of which I'm pursuing right now.  Any other constructive
suggestions are more than welcome...

And The Pits is certainly not a 'has been'...nor will it be while I still have interest in doing it!

Cheers!

Exactly...but your basis for argument was rather flawed, from my point of view.
You said you don't visit The Pits much any more...but you don't race alot of the
sims that we carry stuff for, and you do alot of stuff for GPL yourself.  Does that
make the sites that you don't visit 'has beens'?  I don't visit GPLEA that much, but
I don't race GPL that much either...nor would I consider that a basis to say that
GPLEA was 'over the hill'...

Cheers!
